Abstract

This study examines how digital hyperreality and post-truth culture reshape Islamic communication and broadcasting in contemporary cyberspace. It argues that digital da’wah is no longer only a shift from physical pulpits to online platforms, but a structural transformation of religious meaning, authority, and public reasoning. Using a qualitative library-based design, the research analyzes recent scholarly works on digital da’wah, religious influencers, epistemic authority, Islamic communication ethics, platform governance, and communication regulation. The study applies qualitative content analysis and critical discourse interpretation to identify how algorithmic visibility, audience engagement, symbolic performance, and misinformation influence Islamic messages in digital public spaces. The findings show that digital da’wah may expand access to religious knowledge, yet it also risks commodifying piety, weakening scholarly authority, and reducing complex Islamic teachings into emotional and fragmented content. To address this crisis, Islamic communication philosophy offers ethical principles such as qaulan sadida, qaulan baligha, tabayyun, and amanah as foundations for truthful and responsible communication. The study proposes that future Islamic communication policy must combine digital literacy, epistemic accountability, algorithmic transparency, and ethical co-regulation to protect truth, dignity, public trust, and religious authority in the post-truth era. It strengthens Islamic broadcasting studies by linking ethics, regulation, and platform accountability.

Abstract

This article examines digital uzlah as an Islamic communication ethic for responding to hyperconnectivity, algorithmic distraction, and the weakening of intrapersonal communication in contemporary society. Using qualitative library research, the study analyzes classical Islamic ethical thought, communication theory, critical media studies, and recent literature on digital detox, social media addiction, phubbing, echo chambers, self-control, and digital well-being. The analysis applies qualitative content analysis, critical discourse analysis, and philosophical hermeneutics to reinterpret uzlah from a classical practice of withdrawal into a selective, conscious, and spiritually oriented strategy of digital self-restraint. The findings show that hyperconnectivity converts attention into an economic resource, intensifies dependence on notifications and social validation, and reduces the reflective space needed for self-awareness, moral judgment, and remembrance of God. Digital uzlah is therefore proposed as a practical framework consisting of temporary disconnection, digital spatial curation, and cognitive curation. These practices help users filter harmful content, resist algorithmic pressure, reclaim time, and restore inner dialogue. The study concludes that digital uzlah is not technological rejection, but an ethical discipline that enables Muslims to use digital media with awareness, self-control, truthfulness, and spiritual responsibility in the post-truth era. It contributes to communication studies by linking spirituality, media ethics, and resilience

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting in the era of Artificial Intelligence by focusing on algorithmic authority, religious commodification, and ethical crises in post-truth digital media. Using a qualitative library research design and critical discourse analysis, this article analyzes recent academic literature on AI-based da’wah, digital religion, platform capitalism, religious authority, and Islamic communication ethics. The findings show that AI and platform algorithms do not merely function as technical tools for producing and distributing religious content; they also act as curatorial powers that shape visibility, legitimacy, and public trust in Islamic messages. This transformation shifts religious authority from sanad-based scholarly transmission toward algorithmically amplified popularity, creating risks of misinformation, sensationalism, and weakened epistemic responsibility. The study also finds that Islamic broadcasting is increasingly absorbed into the logic of digital commodification, where religious symbols, sermon clips, and preacher branding are repackaged as attention-based commodities. In response, this article proposes a critical-paradigmatic reconstruction of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting through AI literacy, ethical platform governance, maqaṣid-oriented digital infrastructure, and social-impact-based evaluation. The success of digital da’wah should therefore be measured not only by virality and audience reach, but also by truthfulness, moderation, verification, social cohesion, and spiritual responsibility

Abstract

Gender equality policies in formal workplaces do not automatically produce substantive equality in everyday organisational practice. Their implementation is shaped not only by the existence of formal rules, but also by how such policies are communicated, interpreted, and connected to employees’ workplace experiences. This study examines how women workers experience and interpret the communication of gender equality policies in formal workplace settings. Using a qualitative descriptive-exploratory design, data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with four women workers from different organisational contexts: industry, government or policy consultancy, banking or finance, and digital technology. The data were analysed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, with attention to dialogic space, employee participation, policy legitimacy, and the internalisation of gender equality values. The findings identify four patterns of policy communication: formal communication, deliberative-participatory communication, compliance-based communication, and digital-participatory communication. Formal and compliance-based communication made policies visible and procedurally clear, but provided limited space for employees to discuss their relevance to everyday work. Deliberative-participatory and digital-participatory communication offered more opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and engagement, allowing employees to connect policy principles with workplace realities. Based on these findings, the study proposes an exploratory model of gender equality policy communication consisting of four interconnected elements: dialogic space, employee participation, policy legitimacy, and the internalisation of gender equality values. The study contributes to discussions on policy communication, organisational culture, and gender equality by showing that gender equality policies become more meaningful when employees are given communicative spaces to understand, question, and interpret them. The findings are exploratory and are not intended to represent all formal workplace contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in contemporary da’wah activities and to identify its opportunities, methodological transformations, and associated challenges. The research employs a qualitative approach using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method through the PRISMA procedure. The literature selection results indicate that 10 relevant scientific articles were reviewed in this study. The findings reveal that AI plays a significant role in enhancing the effectiveness of da’wah, particularly in expanding outreach, increasing interactivity, and enabling content personalization through technologies such as chatbots, digital applications, and social media platforms. Furthermore, AI drives a transformation in da’wah methods from conventional approaches to more adaptive and responsive digital practices. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including ethical issues, content validity, algorithmic bias, data security concerns, and the potential diminishing role of scholars (ulama) in guiding the community. Therefore, collaboration between preachers and technology developers, as well as strengthening digital literacy, is essential to ensure that AI utilization remains aligned with Islamic values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how social pressure and beauty standards shaped by modernity influence women’s identity and self-esteem. The focus is on the role of social media and popular culture in constructing beauty standards among women aged 17–30 years. This research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method and a case study strategy. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with four informants, and relevant literature review. The findings reveal that social media platforms, particularly Instagram and TikTok, act as primary agents in shaping homogeneous and visually oriented beauty standards. These standards generate social pressure that encourages women to conform to prevailing expectations. The internalization process occurs when external standards are adopted as part of self-evaluation, affecting confidence and body perception. However, women are not entirely passive, as they actively negotiate their identities through selective adaptation, personal interpretation, and resistance. The study highlights that beauty is a complex social construct closely linked to power relations, media representation, and identity formation in the digital era. This research contributes to communication, gender, and cultural studies, while also promoting awareness of embracing diverse forms of beauty.

Abstract

This research is entitled Semiotic Analysis of Feminism Representation in Mulan Film 2020. The purpose of this research is to find out how the semiotic analysis of feminism representation in Mulan 2020 film. The theory used to analyze this research is semiotic theory. The object of the research is Film Mulan 2020, an American period war action drama film directed by Niki Caro. It is a live-action remake of the 1998 animated film produced by Disney. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with the semiotic analysis technique of the Roland Barthes model. The results of the study indicate that there are several scenes depicting the representation of feminism in the film 3 Mulan 2020 which have been studied through Roland Barthes' Semiotics theory. The representation of feminism can be seen from the signs and meanings that have been studied through Roland Barthes' Semiotics theory.

Abstract

The increasing use of TikTok as a platform for public interaction during natural disasters has transformed the way disaster-related information is disseminated and interpreted, yet studies examining the characteristics of netizen responses in this context remain limited. This study explores the patterns of netizen responses on TikTok to natural disasters in North Sumatra and Aceh in 2025. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through virtual observation, digital documentation, and literature review, with primary data obtained from comments and viral content related to the Aceh Tamiang flood. Data were analyzed using the Computer-Mediated Communication and Stimulus-Organism-Response frameworks. The findings reveal diverse response patterns, including affective responses (empathy and solidarity), cognitive responses (criticism of government disaster management), and conative responses (encouragement of humanitarian action). The comments section functioned as a discursive space for shaping public opinion, while word cloud visualization and sentiment analysis highlighted dominant narratives of humanity and solidarity alongside institutional criticism. The novelty of this study lies in integrating qualitative digital discourse analysis with sentiment mapping to explain how TikTok facilitates participatory disaster communication and public opinion formation. The study concludes that TikTok plays a significant role in interactive disaster communication while simultaneously increasing the risk of misinformation in digital environments.

Abstract

As multicultural societies continue to experience increasing cultural interaction, understanding how traditional performing arts function as media of intercultural communication has become an important scholarly concern. This study examines the meaning of Lemang Dance from the perspective of cross-cultural communication in Tebing Tinggi City to explore how the performance represents cultural identity while facilitating communication among diverse ethnic communities. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Lemang Dance embodies the community’s collective identity and conveys nonverbal messages through movements, facial expressions, costumes, and musical accompaniment that symbolize mutual cooperation, harmony, and togetherness. The performance is widely understood and appreciated by different ethnic groups, demonstrating its role as an effective medium of cross-cultural communication. The novelty of this study lies in positioning Lemang Dance as a traditional performing art that functions simultaneously as a cultural identity marker and an intercultural communication medium within a multicultural society. The findings contribute to the advancement of cultural communication studies and provide practical insights for preserving local cultural heritage while strengthening intercultural understanding through traditional performing arts.

Abstract

This study aims to answer the following question: what forms and mechanisms of gender bias are experienced by female journalists in Medan, and how do these biases impact their roles and positions within the field of journalism? Employing a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that female journalists in Medan face systemic inequalities, including gender-based task segregation, male dominance in strategic editorial positions, and inadequate protection against harassment and workplace discrimination. Furthermore, prevailing social and cultural norms reinforce domestic expectations of women, which significantly restrict their mobility and career advancement in journalism. These findings affirm the relevance of structural feminist theory and the intersectionality framework, while offering practical contributions for the development of gender-responsive media policies. The study recommends revising internal media policies and strengthening advocacy networks to create a more equitable, inclusive, and discrimination-free professional environment for female journalists.
