Abstract

The rapid development of Banda Aceh City has occurred mainly in suburban areas. The impact is that spillover is a complex urban phenomenon that is difficult to measure. Policymakers need a simple method to control and evaluate urban sprawl. This study integrates Shannon's Entropy model with remote sensing and GIS to analyze the pattern of sprawl in each sub-district in Banda Aceh City based on two aspects of distance, namely distance to the city center and road network in order to illustrate the pattern of urban sprawl. The application of Shannon's Entropy method in Banda Aceh City in 2010-2020 can be seen in the Relative Entropy Matrix, which shows that the linear spreading pattern (Quadrant C) is more dominant in Banda Raya Sub-district, Baiturrahman Sub-district, Kuta Raja Sub-district, Kuta Alam Sub-district, Lueng Bata Sub-district, and Syiah Kuala Sub-district. Meanwhile, the transmission pattern of Meuraxa and Jaya Baru sub-districts is in quadrant B, namely the longitudinal type transmission pattern (Radial); in 2020, Jaya Baru sub-district there was a change in the transmission pattern, namely a linear transmission pattern. In the Ulee Kareng sub-district, there is a change in the transmission pattern in 2020, which is in quadrant D, namely the leapfrog development pattern from the previous years, namely 2010 and 2015 in quadrant C with a linear transmission pattern. The spread pattern of Banda Aceh City tends to lead to the East, largely due to landform factors that are very suitable to be used as built-up areas.

Abstract

Most of the coastal zones of Aceh Besar are areas of accumulation of organic compounds such as C-Organic and CaCO3. Therefore, studying the distribution of organic carbon and carbonates in sediments in coastal areas is necessary. This study aims to analyze the distribution of C-Organic and Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) coupled with pH and Salinity tests spatially on the surface at a depth of 40 - 60 cm in the coastal area of Aceh Besar District. The C-Organic content was analyzed using the Walkley and Black method, while Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) was analyzed using the Titrimetric method. Soil pH and salinity tests were carried out in situ using a pH meter, and soil salinity tests were tested using a salinometer. The study results show that the distribution of C-Organic and Carbonate content differs in each location in Aceh Besar Coastal area. The distribution of organic carbon and carbonates in the northern part of Aceh Besar, in the Ujong Batee Puteh area, has an average value of 0.86% and 10.28%. While the distribution of C-Organic in the Lamreh area is, on average, 0.44% and carbonate (CaCO3) is 8.03%. On the other hand, in the western part of Aceh Besar, the distribution C-Organic in the Ujong Pancu area is, on average, 2.83%, and carbonate (CaCO3) is 8.05%. The distribution of C-Organic in the Lhok Seudu area has an average value of 1.07% and carbonate (CaCO3) of 9.65%. The results also reveal the fact that there are 3 (three) factors that influence the distribution of C-Organic and CaCO3. These factors are the topographic location that allows the material to be eroded due to runoff, vegetation that enriches organic matter composition, and the depositional environment. The results of the pH distribution test in soil showed that the pH in the coastal area of Aceh Besar is relatively alkaline, and the salinity distribution is relatively low, indicating the absence of seawater intrusion and salt deposits. Further studies need to be carried out for other depth variations to obtain more comprehensive results of other distributions.

Abstract

Peak discharge information is indispensable for flood control planning by taking into account the physiographic factors of the watershed. Flood occurs because the capacity of the watershed and river channels is smaller than the flood discharge. One of the causes of rivers' reduced flood flow capacity is vegetation cover and land use that cannot store rainfall. Thus, this paper aims to determine the peak discharge from the watershed's physical characteristics and land-use changes by comparing the river storage capacity in the Krueng Seunagan watershed. The rational method is used to calculate the peak discharge. Some of the data used in this study are the shapefile map provided by Geospatial Information Agency, land use, rainfall, soil types, and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS digital imagery. Analysis of the physical characteristics of the watershed consists of morphology and morphometry. Land use in the area of the Krueng Seunagan watershed increased the peak discharge during the observation year (2003-2017). Besides the land-use factor, discharge is also influenced by high rainfall intensity and runoff coefficient obtained from land use analysis. In the Krueng Seunagan watershed area, the C value obtained was 0.0505 0.0720, indicating that the Krueng Seunagan watershed area was classified as good or harmless. The river flow density of 0.53 belongs to the medium category. The river flow increases and decreases in the flood water level, which is neither too fast nor too slow. The roundness index of the Seunagan watershed of 1.0004 indicates that the basins are widened or circular and, consequently, the rate and volume of surface runoff are fast. Krueng Seunagan watershed runoff coefficient increased by 42.51% and rainfall intensity by 37.05%, while discharge increased by 95.31%. The discharge capacity that the Krueng Seunagan River Basin can accommodate from the measurement results in the downstream watershed is 158.47 m3/sec. While the peak discharge using the rational method gets a value that varies in each year of observation from (2003-2017). The peak discharge value in 2003 amounted to 183.52 m3/sec, and the highest in 2017 amounted to 358.44 m3/sec. This shows that the river holding capacity in the Krueng Seunagan watershed will not accept the amount of peak discharge, and consequently, the flood will always occur.

Abstract

The land requirement for Putri Betung Sub District in Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) area kept increasing along with the population growth. The population density in the Putri Betung Sub-district was driven by the need for cultivation and residential area along the GLNP conservation boundary. This study aims to analyze the space adequacy for Putri Betung Sub-District in the GLNP area based on the population pressure prediction for 20 years. The research method was conducted by field survey using remote sensing, interviewed the residents, and analyzed the population pressure index using the Soemarwoto formula. ThePopulation Pressure Index (PPI)forthe cultivation area was determined from 13 villages in Putri Betung Subdistrict and shows that 12 villages had a PPI 1 value (population pressure was over the land carrying capacity limits). Only one village had PPI 1 (population pressure less than the land carrying capacity. Based on data surveys obtained, the cultivation area set in the Putri Betung area was no longer sufficient for population, resultingfrom the expansion in the GLNP area of 4,776.97 ha. Meanwhile, predictive analysis on space adequacy for people living decently in Putri Betung Sub District for 20 upcoming years is 6117.15 ha. In conclusion, 12 out of 13 villages in the Putri Betung SubDistrict havePPI 1 value, which is inversely proportional to the land carrying capacity. The PPI values could result in other pressures on the ecology and biodiversity conservation in National Park. It is suggested that the government need to surpassthe pressure by making new policy on peoples resettlement, expanding the cultivation area, or shifting people's livelihoods.

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates the ecological impact of forest destruction within the Pocut Meurah Intan Grand Forest Park, specifically focusing on its implications for food availability for the avian family Bucerotidae. The research aims to examine the practices contributing to forest destruction within the Tahura ecosystem, analyze the consequential effects of this destruction on the diversity of food sources available to Bucerotidae species, and propose potential solutions to mitigate the identified challenges to Bucerotidae sustenance. Employing an exploratory survey methodology, the research utilizes direct observation techniques to gather data at the study site. Qualitative descriptive analysis is employed to interpret the collected data and draw meaningful conclusions. The distribution of deforestation locations was analyzed using ArcGIS software. The distribution of forest damage is displayed in maps, pictures, and tables. The study results showed that forest damage in the Tahura Pocut Meurah Intan area resulted in forest conversion into plantations, illegal logging, and forest burning for business purposes. There are nine species of bird feed plants in the Bucerotidae family found in Tahura Pocut Meurah Intan. The implications of forest destruction include decreasing the number of bird feed plants of the Bucerotidae family. The species were Ara Hutan (Ficus fistulosa Reinw ex Blume), Beringin (Ficus benjamina L), Empanai (Ficus altassima L), Ndalai (Ficus ampelas Burm.F), Medang (Litsea glutinosa (Lour.) C.B. Robinson), Rambai (Baccaurea bracteata Müll.Arg), Walen (Ficus virens W.A.T.). The remaining nine species are dominated by the Moracea family (77%); in addition, there are also plant species from the Euphorbiaceae (14%) and Phyllanthaceae (9%). Ensuring the sustained availability of food plant resources for the Bucerotidae family necessitates a multi-pronged approach; Habitat restoration through the reclamation of degraded forest areas is crucial; Enhancing community awareness regarding the ecological and economic importance of forest ecosystems is essential for promoting sustainable practices; Bolstering surveillance and enforcement within the Tahura Pocut Meurah Intan forest area, through increased monitoring and the active involvement of Forest Police, law enforcement agencies, local communities, and environmental NGOs, is vital to deter illegal activities and protect existing resources; And consistent application of existing environmental regulations is paramount to ensuring the long-term preservation of the Bucerotidae food plant supply.
