Abstract

This study aims to determine student errors in solving story problems of a two-variable linear equation system using the Newman procedure. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this study involved 6 high school students. The object of this research is the students mistakes in solving the story problems of a two-variable linear equation system. Data collection techniques used are diagnostic test questions and directv communication (interviews). This study concludes that students still make mistakes based on theh Newman procedure. There are five stages of errors in the Newman procedure in solving mathematical problems, namely: (1) errors in rewriting that known in the problem and being unable to interpret the meaning of words, (2) being unable to understand the questions and questions referred to in the problem, (3) unable to change the story problem into a mathematical model according to the procedure and do not know the formula that used, (4) unable to solve the problem using arithmetic operations correctly and incorrectly results in the calculation operation, (5) unable to complete the final result and cannot conclude accordingly with what is asked in the question. The causes of these problems are lack of understanding of the questions, unable to capture problem information contained in the questions, lack of practice in working on the form of story questions, mistaking information from the teacher.

Abstract

This research adopted a pretest–posttest control group experimental design. The primary objective was to investigate the impact of implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) approach on students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities and mathematical communication skills within the context of matrix learning. The population consisted of all 11th-grade students at SMAN 8 Pontianak (N=280), with two classes selected through probability sampling as the experimental and control groups. Data were collected using essay tests, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using independent samples t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and effect size analyses. The findings indicated statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups (p0.05). Specifically, the experimental group achieved a mean post-test score 20.21% higher than the control group in problem-solving and 36.41% higher in mathematical communication. Strong effect sizes (d=1.84 and r=1.34) further demonstrate that ESD-oriented PBL substantially improved students’ competencies compared to conventional methods.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the mistakes made by students when solving the minimum range tree problem using the Prim and Kruskal algorithms. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach, involving 23 students in the fifth semester of the Mathematics Education Study Program, Tanjungpura University Pontianak as research subjects. Data was collected using test, interview, and documentation methods. Data analysis techniques involve stages in the form of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn.  Furthermore, the data was analyzed based on Newman's theory, which included reading errors, comprehension errors, transformation errors, process skills errors, and answer writing errors. The results of the study revealed that students tended to make reading mistakes most often with a total of 9 errors (47.36%), process skills errors with a total of 4 errors (21.05%), and answer writing errors with a total of 6 errors (31.58%). No misunderstandings and transformations were found. The main causes of errors are lack of focus, inadequate understanding of the concept of prim and crucial algorithms, and lack of precision in working on problems. This research recommends the need for a deeper understanding of the concept of primordial and crucial algorithms, as well as an increase in students' accuracy in reading and rechecking answers.

Abstract

The influence of Adversity Quotient (AQ) on students' mathematical problem-solving in answering Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) type questions based on Polya’s steps is highly essential. This research employed an ex-post facto method involving 60 eleventh-grade students of SMA Bawari Pontianak. Data were collected through the measurement of students’ Adversity Quotient levels and a mathematical problem-solving test designed in accordance with Polya’s four-step process: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the solution. The analysis results indicated a highly significant effect of Adversity Quotient on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. A significance value of 0.00 (< 0.05) and a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.421 suggest a moderately strong positive relationship. Students with high to very high Adversity Quotient tended to solve HOTS-type problems more systematically and effectively compared to those with moderate or low AQ. They were also more capable of completing all four of Polya’s steps comprehensively. These findings highlight that mental resilience, perseverance, and the ability to manage pressure are critical factors in successfully solving high-level mathematical problems. Therefore, strengthening students’ Adversity Quotient through instructional strategies and non-cognitive support is strongly recommended to enhance their problem-solving quality.

Abstract

This scholarly inquiry seeks to: (1) identify junior high school students' mathematical representation abilities in solving open-ended problems based on their habits of mind; and (2) analyze the relationship between students' mathematical representation abilities and habits of mind. The research subjects involved 30 students in class VIII A at SMP Negeri 13 Pontianak. This investigation implemented a quantitative descriptive method within a correlational approach. The primary research instrument was a test designed in the format of open-ended questions to measure mathematical representation abilities in similarity material, as well as a habits of mind questionnaire based on four indicators, persisting, thinking flexibility, metacognition, and creating, imagining, and innovating. The analysis results reveal that: (1) Among students with high levels of habits of mind, visual, symbolic, and verbal representation abilities were recorded at 23.8%, 54.3%, and 22.2%, respectively. Students with moderate habits of mind demonstrated higher visual (47.9%), symbolic (65.4%), and verbal (34.7%) representation abilities. Conversely, students with low habits of mind exhibited 46% visual, 67.6% symbolic, and 39.7% verbal representation abilities; and (2) These results indicate a tendency that is not entirely in line with the theoretical assumption that habits of mind contribute positively to mathematical representation ability. No significant correlation exists between students’ habits of mind and their mathematical representation ability in solving open-ended problems (p = 0.246; r = −0.218), with a negative correlation. This result suggests that these two variables likely measure relatively independent dimensions and are influenced by other mediating factors, so that improvements in habits of mind do not directly lead to improvements in mathematical representation ability in solving open-ended problems.Eksplorasi Kemampuan Representasi Matematis Siswa dalam Penyelesaian Soal Open-Ended ditinjau dari Habits of MindABSTRAKKajian ilmiah ini dimaksudkan guna: (1) mengidentifikasi kemampuan representasi matematis siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal open-ended berdasarkan tingkat habits of mind; dan (2) menganalisis hubungan antara kemampuan representasi matematis dan habits of mind siswa. Subjek penelitian melibatkan 30 siswa kelas VIII A SMP Negeri 13 Pontianak. Kata Kunci:Representasi; Open Ended; Habits of Mind; Kesebangunan

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the self-determination of visually impaired students in learning English through the use of a Braille dictionary equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based audio, viewed from the perspective of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which includes autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews with visually impaired students, teachers, and parents and analyzed using thematic analysis through coding procedures. The findings indicate that the competence dimension appeared most dominantly, followed by autonomy, which reflects increased learner independence through the use of assistive technology. The improvement in competence was mainly influenced by the natural and clear AI-generated pronunciation, which enabled students to repeatedly listen to, imitate, and self-correct English pronunciation independently. In addition, the ease of accessing audio through the integrated Braille dictionary supported students’ confidence and learning autonomy. Meanwhile, relatedness emerged through interactions with teachers and parents, although it was relatively limited. These findings suggest that the Braille dictionary with AI-based audio has the potential to enhance accessibility, learner independence, and English learning abilities among visually impaired students, thereby supporting more inclusive learning practices.
