Abstract

Ageism is one of the abandoned psychosocial problems that adult persons were doing age discrimination to the elderly. This study is to describe the prevalence of ageist behaviors amongst adult persons in Makassar city, Indonesia. The method was used a cross-sectional survey design. The Relating to Older People Evaluation (ROPE) survey has been used as an instrument to assess ageist behaviors. One hundred adult persons responded (response rate (RR) 100%). Positive ageist behaviors show that respondents hold doors open for elderly because of their age (93%), enjoy conversations with elderly because of their age (99%), and ask an elderly for advice because of their age (98%).  Negative behaviors such as talking louder or slower to old people because of their age (95%), use simple words when talking to old people (99 %), and when an old person has an ailment, they may said, 'that's normal at your age' (96%). Adult persons report engaging in ageist behaviors that potentially harm the mental health of the elderly. This survey can be a reference to solve negative behaviors for older people.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of integrating online self-regulated learning with virtual labs in enhancing critical thinking skills among STEM students. The research adopted a controlled experimental design involving two groups—experimental and control—over a two-month period, employing a mix of interactive virtual labs and structured online self-regulated learning strategies for the former, while maintaining traditional educational methods for the latter. Results indicated significant improvements in the experimental group's critical thinking capabilities across multiple indicators such as interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation, compared to modest improvements in the control group. The experimental group benefited from a dynamic and interactive learning environment that allowed for hands-on experiments and simulations, fostering a deeper understanding and engagement with scientific concepts. This environment, enhanced by the strategic application of self-regulated learning techniques, facilitated a more effective development of critical thinking skills than traditional methods. The study highlighted the potential of virtual labs combined with self-regulated learning to significantly enhance educational outcomes in STEM education, suggesting that such integrative approaches could better prepare students for the complexities of the modern scientific landscape. Additionally, the study underscored the need for future research to explore these strategies across a more diverse and broader educational context to confirm these findings and further refine the educational interventions employed.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the quality of sap water by measuring its viscosity and dielectric constant. The sample used is pure sap water and sap water mixed with coconut water. The dielectric constant was measured using the parallel plate method while the viscosity was measured using the Oswald viscometer method. Based on the measurement results, the viscosity coefficient value of pure sap water is 1.558 Poise. The value of the viscosity coefficient decreases as the concentration of the sap water decreases where the viscosity coefficient value is 1.005 Poise for the sap water with a concentration of 50% and 0.753 Poise for the sap water with a concentration of 10%. In measuring the value of the dielectric constant, the dielectric constant of pure sap water is 7.38 x 105. The dielectric constant value of the sap water decreases with the addition of coconut water which is 4.90 x 105 at a concentration of 50%, and 3.39 x 105 at a concentration 10%. Pure sap water has a higher level of viscosity than coconut water which is indicated by a higher coefficient of viscosity compared to sap water which has been mixed with coconut water so that it is able to store more electrical energy, as a result the capacitance increases and the dielectric constant also increases.
