Abstract

This study explores the integration of Ethnomathematics within the Zero Waste cultural framework, grounded in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), to enhance students' creative thinking skills and sustainability awareness. Conducted in several elementary and middle schools in Surabaya, Indonesia, the research employed an Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) model combined with cognitive, affective, and behavioral questionnaires and tests. The findings indicate that embedding local cultural elements in mathematics learning significantly improves students' understanding of sustainable practices, particularly in waste management, recycling, and resource planning. Observations revealed that students demonstrated greater enthusiasm, creativity, and critical thinking when engaging with mathematical concepts contextualized in real-world environmental issues. Additionally, the application of Zero Waste principles in traditional market settings allowed students to connect mathematical theories such as geometry, data analysis, and spatial planning to everyday sustainability challenges. The study concludes that the ethnomathematics approach not only fosters academic achievement but also cultivates responsible environmental behavior. However, the scope was limited to specific cultural and geographic contexts, suggesting the need for further research across diverse settings. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge emphasizing the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy in sustainability education and recommends expanding such models to broader educational environments.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of integrated Environmental Sustainability learning and critical reasoning skills among first-grade elementary school students. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving 31 students and their classroom teacher at a private elementary school in West Surabaya. Data collection techniques included observation and documentation during a seven-week learning process in the second semester of the 2024–2025 academic year. The learning design was aligned with the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, particularly within the “Sharing the Planet” unit. Activities involved KWL-Charts, multimedia-based exploration of natural resources, field trips to model sustainable communities, and classroom-based environmental observations. Students engaged in problem identification, solution analysis, and decision-making regarding environmental issues, emphasizing 3R actions (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through project-based learning. Findings revealed that 87% of students demonstrated increased critical reasoning skills in proposing environmental solutions, and 92% showed improved understanding of sustainability concepts. The activities directly supported SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). This study concludes that integrating Environmental Sustainability learning with critical reasoning skills can effectively foster ecological awareness and empower young learners to actively contribute to global sustainable development goals (SDGs) from an early age.

Abstract

Digital transformation in the world of education has encouraged the adoption of various technology-based learning media, one of which is e-modules. E-modules are considered to provide a more flexible, interactive, and interesting learning experience for elementary school students. This research aims to examine the trends, development models, effectiveness, and challenges of e-modules through the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, following the PRISMA methodology. A total of 19 scientific articles published between 2018 and 2024 were systematically reviewed using the stages of identification, screening, feasibility selection, and data synthesis. The literature search was conducted using databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, ERIC, and DOAJ, with keywords including "e-module," "elementary school," "digital learning," and "technology integration." The results of the study show that the majority of e-modules developed use innovative learning approaches such as Problem Based Learning, Project Based Learning, Contextual Teaching and Learning, as well as science and sustainability literacy-based approaches. The analyzed e-modules have high validity (average above 90%), high practicality, and have been proven to be effective in improving learning outcomes, learning motivation, science literacy, critical thinking skills, and student independence. The e-module also integrates various multimedia elements such as videos, narratives, interactive quizzes, and digital simulations that reinforce students' fascination and understanding of the material. However, some of the challenges found include limited digital infrastructure, lack of teacher training in the development and use of e-modules, and limited access to students in certain areas. Therefore, a comprehensive implementation strategy, strong education policy support, and increased digital literacy for educators and students are needed. This study concludes that e-modules have great potential in supporting the digitalization of learning in primary schools, noting that technical and resource challenges must be addressed collaboratively. These findings are expected to be the basis for the development of education policies and learning media innovations in the future.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and describe the profile of fifth-grade students’ problem-solving abilities through the integration of an Ethno-STEAM approach at SDN Kendangsari IV Surabaya. Using a descriptive quantitative design, the study involved 18 students and focused on analyzing their performance across five problem-solving stages based on Polya's problem-solving framework: identifying the problem, generating solutions, planning and designing, implementing, and evaluating. Students were given a contextual task that integrated cultural (ethno) elements and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) to solve real-life environmental issues related to plastic waste in their school environment. The results revealed that 72% of students were at the Developing Level, indicating emerging capabilities in identifying problems and proposing basic solutions, yet requiring substantial teacher assistance in planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. Meanwhile, 28% reached the Proficient Level, demonstrating more independent and systematic thinking, although further support was still needed for deeper reflection and evaluation. No students reached the Excellent Level, and none remained at the Initial Level. A detailed analysis across Polya’s stages showed strong performance in problem identification (67% at Good to Excellent levels), but significant challenges in the evaluation stage, where 89% of students were categorized as "Needs Improvement." These findings suggest that metacognitive scaffolding, localized content, and collaborative projects are essential to enhance higher-order thinking skills. The Ethno-STEAM approach shows strong potential in connecting scientific concepts with students’ cultural backgrounds, encouraging both relevance and engagement in learning. However, its implementation must be supported by structured pedagogical strategies to maximize its effectiveness in elementary education contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs and design a contextual card-based learning medium to improve the understanding of ecosystem harmony concepts among fifth-grade elementary students. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, with the initial stage focusing on needs analysis through observations, interviews, and diagnostic tests. The results indicated that students had difficulties understanding the relationships among ecosystem components, the concept of food chains, and environmental balance. Teachers reported limited availability of relevant instructional media, while literature reviews confirmed the effectiveness of visual-interactive media in enhancing science concept comprehension among elementary students. The proposed card media incorporates structured information, engaging illustrations, and interactive activities tailored to students’ cognitive development levels. This design is expected to serve as an alternative solution in science learning, linking abstract concepts with real-world phenomena in students’ surroundings. Further research is recommended to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the media in improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Curiosity and spatial interest are increasingly recognized as critical factors in improving science education at the elementary level. This study investigated the role of curiosity and spatial interest as mediators that bridge conceptual understanding and science learning outcomes. Employing a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 100 fifth-grade students and six teachers in three public elementary schools in Surabaya, Indonesia. Instruments included questionnaires, classroom observations, interviews, and concept comprehension tests. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. The results revealed that 70% of students with high curiosity demonstrated stronger conceptual understanding compared to their peers with lower curiosity levels. Exploration-based learning increased conceptual comprehension by 20%, while interactive media and direct experiments enhanced student engagement and understanding. Furthermore, 75% of students reported higher motivation during collaborative discussions, and 85% of students supported by parental involvement performed better in science learning. Spatial interest also emerged as a significant predictor of learning outcomes, as 68% of students who engaged in mapping and visualization activities achieved higher comprehension scores. This study concludes that curiosity and spatial interest are interrelated factors that substantially enhance science learning outcomes. Effective instructional strategies should integrate exploration, collaboration, interactive media, and spatial tasks to foster these elements. The findings contribute to the development of inquiry-based and contextual pedagogies that not only improve academic performance but also cultivate lifelong curiosity and ecological awareness among elementary students.
