Abstract

ARTICLE HIGLIGHTS- Genetic variation found in long-tailed parakeets native to Enggano Island- Genetic information shows population differences among island parakeets- Enggano Island population displays unique genetic characteristics- Results support conservation efforts for long-tailed parakeets on Enggano IslandABSTRACTThe Enggano Long-tailed Parakeet is considered as an agricultural pest by farmers on Enggano Island, leading to a continuing decline in its wild population. This study investigated the genetic characteristics, nucleotide composition, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), species-specific barcodes, genetic distances, and phylogenetic relationships of this subspecies using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Fourteen blood samples were collected from community-owned captive birds. Total genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy® Blood and Tissue Kit following the Qiagen Spin-Column Protocol. DNA amplification was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using specific primers at the Zoology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Bengkulu. The amplified DNA was separated on a 2.4% agarose gel and visualized under ultraviolet light. Samples displaying clear DNA bands were subsequently sequenced by Apical Scientific. Sequence data were processed and aligned using MEGA version 11.0, resulting in a 665 bp COI fragment suitable for analysis. A total of 19 SNPs and 12 species-specific barcode sites were identified, indicating a distinct genetic signature in the Enggano population. Conserved sites were highly dominant (97.14%), while variable sites accounted for only 2.86%. Nucleotide composition analysis revealed a higher GC content (50.50%) than AT (49.47%). Genetic distance analysis showed 6 – 11.3% divergence between Psittacula longicauda modesta and other Psittacula species. Phylogenetic reconstruction placed all Enggano individuals in a well-supported monophyletic cluster (bootstrap value = 100), confirming their genetic separation from other parakeet species. These findings indicate low genetic diversity within the Enggano population, likely resulting from geographic isolation and small population size. The identified barcode sites underscore the strong diagnostic potential of the COI gene for molecular identification and taxonomic differentiation. Overall, this study establishes the first genetic baseline for Psittacula longicauda modesta, expands molecular resources available for the genus Psittacula, and provides valuable insights for conservation planning and taxonomic assessment of this endemic subspecies.

Abstract

Twenty-first-century education necessitates that students cultivate collaborative competencies in tandem with cognitive abilities. However, structured pedagogical models for developing and assessing collaboration remain limited, particularly those grounded in culturally responsive frameworks. This study examines the implementation of the Ethno-STEAM learning model, which integrates ethnomathematical principles with interdisciplinary STEAM education through the LOCAL syntax—Link with Culture, Observe and Organize, Connect with STEAM, Act through Creation, and Learn and Reflect. The model explicitly aligns each instructional stage with specific indicators of collaboration: active engagement, social interaction, decision-making, and evaluative reflection. Employing a mixed-methods design, the study involved 84 eighth-grade students from three junior high schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected through self-assessment questionnaires, peer evaluations, classroom observations, and structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-samples t-tests to compare self- and peer-assessment scores, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis to elucidate students’ reflections on collaboration at each stage of the LOCAL model. The quantitative results indicated moderate to high levels of collaboration, with the highest mean score in social interaction (M=3.27) and the lowest in decision-making (M=3.04). A statistically significant difference was found between self- and peer-assessment scores, t(83)=2.204, p=.030, d=.240, suggesting that students exhibited positive self-awareness while also benefiting from multiple evaluative perspectives. Thematic findings revealed that engagement with cultural contexts enhanced active participation, and that gender-based communication tendencies affected the quality of social interaction. Finally, the LOCAL model effectively scaffolds the development of students’ collaborative competencies in culturally meaningful ways. It provides educators with a systematic, pedagogically grounded framework that unites ethnomathematical values with the interdisciplinary goals of 21st-century STEAM education.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving skills remains a critical concern in Indonesian education. PISA 2022 results showing that Indonesian students’ mathematical performance is significantly below the OECD average. This issue is particularly important in vocational high schools, where mathematics is closely related to technical and workplace applications. Although Problem Based Learning (PBL) has been widely reported as effective in improving students’ problem-solving skills, most previous studies were conducted in general senior high schools and primarily focused on learning outcomes rather than examining students’ problem-solving processes in depth. Research specifically analyzing vocational students’ problem-solving characteristics at each stage of Polya’s framework within PBL, particularly on composite functions, remains limited. This study aims to fill this gap by qualitatively analyzing Grade XI vocational students’ mathematical problem-solving characteristics at each stage of Polya’s framework within PBL instruction on composite functions. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed involving 34 students. Data were collected through validated essay tests, observations, and interviews. Data analysis was conducted using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that most students were categorized at a moderate level (83.33%), demonstrating adequate procedural ability but weaknesses in the planning and reflection stages. The study highlights an imbalance between procedural and metacognitive development and suggests the need for explicit scaffolding in planning and reflection to strengthen vocational students’ systematic problem-solving skills.
