Abstract

Abstract

Cultural festivals are increasingly recognized as strategic vehicles for community empowerment and the enhancement of local tourism economies. The Cisarua Bisa 2025 Festival combines three main pillars—community participation, arts and culture, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)—into a synergistic ecosystem. This study examines how festivals can foster sustainable collaborative models that function as instruments for social empowerment, cultural preservation, and creative economic development. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, involving 21 key informants selected through purposive sampling, with data collected over three days through participant observation, in-depth interviews, documentation analysis, and literature review. The findings reveal the emergence of the Festival-Based Community Empowerment Model (FBCEM), which emphasizes integrated community engagement, cultural heritage preservation, and MSME development. This model contributes a novel conceptual framework that is replicable in other regions. Academically, the research enriches the discourse on cultural tourism and empowerment models; practically, it offers strategic insights for stakeholders aiming to develop festivals as sustainable and collaborative platforms.

Abstract

The study aims to reveal the ideology and representation of climate change in the speeches of youth activist Greta Thunberg using eco-critical discourse analysis from an ecolinguistic perspective. Data were collected from Thunberg's speeches and analysed through detailed discourse analysis techniques to uncover themes and ideological constructs. Results show that climate change is portrayed as a human-caused crisis requiring systemic and regulatory changes. The identified ideology, termed imaginative green radicalism, frames climate change as an opportunity for collective action rather than a burden. According to Stibbe's ecolinguistics’ criteria, this discourse qualifies as beneficial discourse and should be promoted widely in society. Abstract

This study explores the realization of mood and transitivity systems in Indonesian EFL students’ recount and report writings using the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The study aims to describe the grammatical patterns that characterize each genre and to identify how students use language to construct meaning. The data were obtained from ten texts written by five eleventh-grade students of a vocational high school in Bandung, consisting of five recounts and five reports. Each text was analyzed clause by clause to identify mood types, process types, and thematic structures. The findings reveal that declarative clauses dominate both genres, showing that students primarily use language to provide information. In recount texts, material processes are most frequent, representing sequences of actions and events, whereas report texts are dominated by relational processes, expressing classification and description. Thematic analysis also shows that topical themes are frequently used to maintain coherence. These results indicate that students’ grammatical choices are consistent with genre purposes, yet their variation in clause construction remains limited. The study suggests that explicit teaching of SFL-based writing can enhance learners’ awareness of how language functions to convey meaning in different text types.

Abstract

Reading competence is fundamental to students’ intellectual and personal development, particularly in acquiring foreign language proficiency. This study examined the effects of online dictionary use and learning motivation on English reading comprehension among secondary school students. Employing a quasi-experimental quantitative design with comparative and correlational approaches, 131 tenth-grade students from SMAN 1 Madiun participated. Data were collected using a standardized reading comprehension test and a validated 30-item motivation questionnaire. Results showed that online dictionary use and learning motivation were both positively correlated with reading comprehension (r = 0.797 and r = 0.980, respectively; p 0.001). Two-way ANOVA revealed significant main effects of online dictionary use (F = 106.919, p 0.001, η² = 0.457) and learning motivation (F = 5.943, p = 0.016, η² = 0.045), with no significant interaction effect (p = 0.133). These findings highlight the importance of integrating digital tools and motivational strategies to strengthen English reading comprehension.
