Abstract

Nearly 30% of Indonesian population is adolescent. Indonesia has various programs to improve the health status of adolescents from various sectors. However, the program intended for adolescent reproductive health has not been fully utilized, with one of the reasons being improper management by primary healthcare on cross-sector cooperation causing a knowledge gap among adolescents about the program. Purpose: This study aims to identify the perception of stakeholders from various sectors on adolescent health program in Surabaya, East Java. Methods: This study used a qualitative descriptive approach through interviews and FGDs to relevant stakeholders. Research subjects came from elements of government (health, education, religion, family planning, and social), NGOs, media (radio, newspaper media), teachers (representatives of 10 high schools in Surabaya), parents (Family Health Empowerment group). Data were analyzed by thematic analysis. Results: Every governmental office has a program for adolescents, but most are only providing information. Therefore, NGOs complete programs have not been implemented by the government such as a peer educator program for high-risk community. The media also has youth programs that are tailored to the needs or trends. Teachers and parents as having the closest control with adolescents, also play a role in providing information and accompanying adolescents. The various roles of the various stakeholder groups require synergy efforts to avoid overlapping. Conclusion: Adolescents in Surabaya are considered unhealthy and engage in risky behaviors by relevant stakeholders. Various programs have been implemented to support adolescent health. However, different perspectives on implementing adolescent health programs can cause conflict between stakeholders or confusion among adolescents. The diversity of stakeholders involved in adolescent health programs also needs to be encouraged.

Abstract

Background: Floods are a frequent natural disaster that significantly impacts public health, particularly the spread of infectious diseases. Effective health interventions are needed to reduce post-flood health risks. Purpose: To map the literature related to post-flood disease prevention strategies. Method: This scoping review involved five main stages: (1) identifying the research question; (2) identifying relevant studies; (3) selecting studies; (4) recording data; and (5) summarizing and reporting the results. The literature search for this observation was conducted in three databases: the National Library of Indonesia, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria for articles were published between 2021 and 2025 in English and Indonesian, literature reviews, opinion pieces, editorials, or conference abstracts focused on post-flood disease prevention, the research setting was community-based, participants were health workers, and post-flood outcomes were the primary outcome. Results: Five key themes emerged from the analysis: increasing access to clean water and sanitation, community education, surveillance and rapid response, mental health support, and a multisectoral approach. Integrated and collaborative health interventions have proven crucial in reducing post-flood disease incidence. Conclusion: Despite progress in post-flood health interventions, there are still gaps in research focusing on long-term interventions, vulnerable populations, and multisectoral approaches. Recommendation: Future research should address these aspects to improve the effectiveness of health policies and practices in addressing post-flood health challenges.   Keywords: Disease Prevention; Post-Flood Disaster; Strategy. Abstract

Introduction: HIV remains a significant global public health issue, with East Java, Indonesia, contributing 15–20% of the national HIV cases. Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) is a critical strategy for early detection and prevention, yet its uptake among adolescents is influenced by multifaceted factors. This study aimed to identify the determinants of adolescents' attitudes towards VCT for HIV in East Java. Methods: An observational analytic cross-sectional study was conducted from July to December 2024, involving 329 adolescents aged 18–24 years selected through random sampling. Data were collected via a validated online questionnaire assessing demographic, socio-economic, knowledge, psychosocial, and institutional factors. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to determine significant predictors of VCT attitudes. Results: Nine factors were significantly associated with positive attitudes toward VCT: younger age (OR = 0.81), male gender (OR = 2.34), higher parental income (OR = 1.86), higher HIV-related knowledge (OR = 2.18), better VCT knowledge (OR = 1.72), low-risk sexual activity (OR = 1.95), service availability (OR = 2.48), family support (OR = 1.77), and institutional support (OR = 1.63). Conversely, stigma remained a significant barrier (OR = 0.49). Conclusion: Addressing stigma, enhancing institutional and family support, and improving access to VCT services are crucial for increasing VCT uptake among adolescents. Targeted interventions, including family-based approaches and comprehensive sexual education, are recommended to foster positive attitudes and reduce HIV transmission in East Java.

Abstract

Introduction: Student mental well-being was a concern prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. During COVID-19, mental health problems increased due to heightened anxiety and concern. Family and friends' support plays a crucial role in maintaining students' mental health. This study examines the impact of social support on students' mental well-being during the pandemic. Methods: This analytic observational study employed a cross-sectional design with a total of 400 active student participants. Psychometric instruments used in this study were the Sallis Social Support Scale and the short version of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS-7). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation to determine the relationship between family and friends' support and students' mental well-being. Results: There was no significant relationship between family support and students’ mental well-being. However, only support from friends showed a statistically significant positive relationship with students' mental well-being (r = 0.176, p = 0.001), while support from family was not significantly associated (p = 0.073). Conclusion: Social support from friends played a crucial role in maintaining students' mental well-being during COVID-19. Encouraging peer support, such as reminding each other to complete tasks, can positively influence mental health.

Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) innovate learning models using the Value Clarification Technique (VCT) oriented toward improving students’ digital literacy to foster national values at State Junior High School/SMPN 4 Sengkang, and 2) identify the problems in implementing this innovative learning model to promote digital literacy and national values at State Junior High School/SMPN 4 Sengkang. This study was a research and development study that used the Design-Based Research (DBR) approach. The approach included problem identification and analysis, solution design, iterative cycles of testing and refinement, and reflection to produce design principles and implementation guidelines. Data was collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The data analysis used an interactive model, including data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The research showed that the innovative learning model based on the Value Clarification Technique successfully improved students’ digital literacy and fostered national values. However, obstacles in implementing this innovative learning model, including inadequate student facilities for online learning at home, affected students’ participation in online learning. In addition, the teachers, especially in group one, tended to focus only on sharing materials and assignments during online learning, which could make students feel bored.

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescents have sleep problems, as their sleep duration does not meet the recommended sleep duration of 8-10 hours, leading to various sleep-related problems. Sleep duration is suspected to have detrimental effects on health, such as non-communicable diseases including obesity, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the correlation between sleep duration and the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is still conflicting, especially in the adolescent population. This study aimed to examine and analyze the effect of sleep duration on anthropometric measurements and MetS in overweight/obese adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving healthy overweight/obese adolescents was conducted from September to October 2019 to evaluate the effect of sleep duration on anthropometric measurements, lipid profiles, fasting blood glucose levels, and blood pressure in overweight/obese adolescents. Results and discussion: A total of 197 subjects showed no significant differences in body height, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, and lipid profile based on sleep duration categories. Subjects with short sleepers were older than those with sufficient sleep (p<0.05). However, long sleepers were heavier, had larger BMI-for-age z-scores, and larger waist circumferences than sufficient and short sleepers (p<0.05). However, the differences between the short, sufficient, and long sleepers were U-shaped. Sleep duration was not correlated with MetS or MetS components (abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, and low HDL-c). Conclusion: Long sleepers (>11 h/night) were heavier, had greater BMI-for-age z-scores, and larger waist circumference than (<sufficient sleeper (6-10 h/night), or short sleepers 6 h/night).

Abstract

Background: According to Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), adolescents are aged 10-24 years and are not married. Indonesian Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) 2018 showed around 58.8% of adolescents aged 10-19 years had been married and had had a pregnancy. The Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (SDKI) results revealed that risk behavior among male junior and senior high school students was around 8.06%, and female were 4.17%. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the Planning Generation (GenRe) Program knowledge and adolescents’ characteristics with dating experience in East Java Province. Method: This research was a cross-sectional study. Secondary data were collected from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey (SKAP) and were analyzed descriptively with cross-tabulation and chi-square tests. The risk estimate calculation was also carried out to identify the Odd Ratio (OR). The sample used was 5,300 adolescents in East Java Province after weighting. The research variables consisted of dating behavior in adolescents, age, gender, and adolescents' knowledge about GenRe, HIV/AIDS, drugs, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Adolescent Reproductive Health Program. Results: The results showed that 41.80% of adolescents in East Java had dated. There was a significant correlation between dating behavior with adolescents’ knowledge about GenRe, HIV/AIDS, drugs, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Adolescent Reproductive Health Program (P-Value = 0.00). Dating behavior also had a significant correlation with age (P-Value = 0.00) and gender (P-Value = 0.00). This study concluded that there was a correlation between dating behavior in adolescents in East Java Province with age, gender, and adolescents’ knowledge about GenRe, HIV/AIDS, drugs, Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs), and Adolescent Reproductive Health Program. They were strengthening the GenRe program through the introduction, explanation of program activities, and the process of youth involvement. So far, teenagers only know the name of the GenRe program. This action needs to be applied to prevent negative effects caused by dating behavior, such as premarital sex, unwanted pregnancy, and early marriage.
