Abstract

The persistent bias in media representations of non-binary gender identities in Indonesia raises a critical question: to what extent are public media and language capable of fostering inclusive and equitable communication? This study seeks to examine how non-binary gender identities are constructed through language strategies in Indonesian media practices, and to evaluate the extent to which principles of inclusive communication are implemented or overlooked within public discourse. The primary objective of this research is to systematically analyze patterns of representation and linguistic strategies concerning non-binary identities, while critically assessing these practices through the lens of inclusive communication. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with a qualitative approach, this study synthesizes relevant academic literature published between 2015 and 2025. The theoretical framework integrates Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, and Foss and Pearson’s concept of inclusive communication. The findings reveal that media representations of non-binary identities in Indonesia remain predominantly stereotypical and exclusionary, reinforced by gender-biased language and a lack of institutional awareness regarding inclusivity. Mainstream media have yet to adopt gender-neutral editorial standards, with more affirming narratives primarily emerging from grassroots initiatives and alternative media spaces.

Abstract

This research aims to uncover how the views of religious figures and political figures shape public assumptions towards women’s leadership in government The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with purposively selected religious and political figures. These two groups were chosen because of their important role in shaping opinions and influencing social discourse in society. The results show that the discourse on women’s leadership is still largely overshadowed by conservative religious interpretations and deeply rooted patriarchal social constructs Religious figures generally express caution or even reject women’s leadership, referring to normative textsunderstood literally. Meanwhile, the views of political figures are more diverse—some openly support it based on women’s capacity and contribution in government, while others still view women as symbolic complements in politics.Public discourse on women’s leadership is largely determined by the legitimacy granted by religious and political figures When these two authorities tend to maintain traditional gender interpretations, the opportunities for women to be substantively accepted in leadership become limited. Therefore, reconstructing the discourse and the active involvement of these figures in promoting narratives of equality are key to opening up a more inclusive and gender-just space for power.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze political communication strategies in shaping public opinion, specifically how narratives constructed by political actors reflect or deviate from social reality in the digital era. The background of the problem includes a significant shift in political communication from one-way to a dynamic and participatory process through various digital platforms, where narratives are no longer limited to official speeches but evolve into visual, symbolic, and interactive content on social media. While this strategy is effective in building identity, emotional attachment, and influencing public perception of issues , problems arise when constructed narratives do not align with the reality faced by the public, which can lead to cognitive dissonance and a decline in public trust. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of the meaning, context, and messages of political communication. Data collection involves document studies (social media posts, online news, campaign content, political speeches) and in-depth interviews with political communication practitioners, campaign teams, or media observers. Data are analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify themes, symbols, language styles, and main messages , with source triangulation to ensure validity. The findings indicate that political actors strategically utilize emotional and identity-based narratives, such as justice, nationalism, and religion, as well as issue framing, to shape public opinion. The use of social media algorithms accelerates message dissemination and creates echo chambers, reinforcing polarization. Although effective in building psychological closeness and voter loyalty , the discrepancy between narrative and reality can potentially decrease public trust, trigger cognitive dissonance, a crisis of representation, and polarization. Therefore, healthy political communication must balance narrative with factual validity to strengthen credibility and foster democratic, inclusive, and educational communication.

Abstract

The emergence of digital media has transformed Islamic preaching into more interactive and inclusive forms. One such innovation is the Log In Podcast, which combines religious messages with entertainment (dakwahtainment) and features interfaith dialogue. This study explores how inclusive communication strategies are applied in the Log In Podcast Season 3, particularly in engaging religious and cultural minorities. This qualitative research uses a descriptive approach with content analysis techniques. Data were gathered from eight episodes of the Log In YouTube podcast and audience comments. NVivo 12 software was used for coding and thematic mapping of both the content and responses. The analysis reveals three key indicators of inclusive da’wah namely diverse guest speakers (including Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and cultural figures), a wide range of themes (such as tolerance, psychology, sharia, and the arts), and positive audience engagement. Comments reflect appreciation for the open, respectful tone and the podcast’s ability to bridge religious differences. Figures like Habib Ja’far play a central role in mediating dialogue, while audiences respond enthusiastically to recurring interfaith guests and inclusive discussions. The Log In Podcast succeeds as a platform for inclusive digital da’wah, creating a space where religious diversity is respected and discussed. This approach not only appeals to Muslim audiences but also engages minorities and non-Muslims, fostering interfaith understanding. The podcast demonstrates how social media can be effectively used for pluralistic and modern religious communication.

Abstract

Unavoidable marital conflict requires effective communication management to maintain harmonious family ties. This qualitative case study research analyzes the application of Face Negotiation Theory in communication with couples resolving conflicts at the Medan Class 1A Religious Court. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three subjects (husband/wife) and divorce file documentation. The results show that preventive and restorative face-work plays a crucial role in managing conflict, influenced by cultural assumptions (individualism/collectivism) and personality tendencies (independent/interdependent), as well as situational factors such as role assessment and relational distance. In the formal context that has reached the trial, individuals have specifically experienced a face-threatening process, so that the tendency of mutual-face concern becomes dominant towards self-face concern with the aim of restoring reputation and winning arguments. This study confirms the relevance of Face Negotiation Theory in the communication process with couples for conflict resolution in the religious court environment, offering benefits to increase the effectiveness of mediation and family dispute resolution with attention to the "face" aspect and interpersonal communication behavior.

Abstract

This study is a content analysis of YouTube videos depicting the feud between Nikita Mirzani and her daughter, Lolly. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of cyberbullying on students (adolescents) in the context of education in Indonesia. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying carried out through digital media and is prevalent among teenagers. This behaviour is influenced by various factors, both internal and external, including family, school, and community environments. The method used is a qualitative approach through content analysis and literature review, referencing various sources such as journals, books, and relevant documents. The research findings indicate that cyberbullying has a serious impact on students' learning processes, causing psychological disturbances such as stress, depression, and even suicidal tendencies. In the cases of Nikita Mirzani and Lolly, it is evident that children tend to imitate their mothers' controversial behaviour. This phenomenon indicates the exploitation of fantasy and public image for economic gain through digital platforms. However, such actions indirectly foster negative character traits among viewers, particularly teenagers, and have the potential to undermine educational, moral, and religious values of the nation. Therefore, such digital content requires serious attention as it negatively impacts children's development and the education system in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the mass media constructs the discourse of territorial conflict through reporting on the dispute over four islands in the waters of Aceh Singkil that were transferred to North Sumatra. This study highlights how two national media, Tempo.com and Kumparan.com, frame the issue of territorial boundaries that are administratively, politically, and economically sensitive. The novelty of this study lies in the comparative framing approach between the two media with different journalism styles, as well as their relationship to the potential for socio-political escalation at the local level. This study uses a qualitative method with Robert Entman's framing analysis model approach, which examines four main elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and suggest remedies. The results show that Tempo.com tends to frame the conflict as an administrative and technocratic problem that is resolved through legal channels and cross-institutional coordination, while Kumparan.com emphasizes the economic dimension by highlighting the potential for oil and gas reserves on the disputed islands, opening up space for public speculation, and encouraging collaborative solutions between regions. This difference in framing emphasizes the role of the media in shaping public perception and maintaining the stability of the narrative on the issue of territorial conflict in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the changing broadcasting policy in the digital context, with an emphasis on the influence of Over-The-Top (OTT) regulation on the traditional television industry. Digital transformation has drastically changed the way content is delivered and consumed, resulting in a shift from conventional television dominance to digital platforms. OTT regulation, which aims to regulate streaming service providers and digital content, has a significant impact on the existing business model, revenue, and operations of the television industry. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative approach, which includes literature studies and in-depth interviews with various stakeholders in the broadcasting sector. The findings of this study show that OTT regulation has a dualistic impact. On the one hand, this regulation provides a more structured legal basis for OTT service providers, which has the potential to encourage innovation and investment in the digital sector. However, on the other hand, the regulation also poses challenges for the conventional television industry, such as declining advertising revenue, increased competition, and the need to adapt to new technologies and business models. This shows that the television industry must face the new reality demanded by digital developments. This study concludes that an inclusive and adaptive broadcasting policy transformation is needed to achieve a balance between the development of the digital sector and the protection of the sustainability of the conventional television industry. The proposed policy recommendations include increasing collaboration between the government, OTT providers, and the television industry, as well as strengthening digital literacy among the public. These measures are expected to support the creation of a healthier and more sustainable broadcasting ecosystem amid rapid changes in the media landscape.
