Abstract

Digital broadcasting transformation is a must in the context of convergent media that continues to develop. This change not only has a significant impact on broadcasting technology, but also requires regulatory harmonization to ensure that digital broadcasting can be implemented effectively and sustainably. This study aims to analyze the importance of regulatory harmonization in the context of digital broadcasting transformation in Tanah Karo Regency. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative approach with case studies, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings of the study show that there are various challenges in the implementation of digital broadcasting, such as differences in the interpretation of regulations, lack of digital infrastructure, and the need to increase the capacity of human resources. Therefore, harmonization of regulations is crucial to create a consistent framework, encourage innovation, and ensure digital inclusion for all levels of society. This study recommends that local governments collaborate with relevant stakeholders in formulating adaptive and inclusive regulations. Abstract

Handling disinformation in the digital era is a significant challenge for many countries, including Indonesia and countries in the ASEAN region. The spread of disinformation through social media can threaten social, political, and economic stability. This study aims to analyze social media regulation in the context of handling disinformation in Indonesia and compare it with communication policies in several other ASEAN countries. With a qualitative approach, this study collects data from primary sources such as policy documents and interviews with various stakeholders. The findings show that while there are similarities in regulatory efforts, such as the implementation of anti-hoax laws and strengthening the role of supervisory agencies, there are striking differences in the implementation and effectiveness of policies in each country. In Indonesia, the main challenge lies in law enforcement and the level of digital literacy of the community. Meanwhile, countries like Singapore are implementing a stricter approach with strict enforcement and severe sanctions for violators. This study recommends the need for more intensive regional collaboration in tackling disinformation and increasing digital literacy as key steps in combating the spread of misinformation.

Abstract

Digital transformation in broadcasting has had a significant impact on the media sector and broadcasting regulations in Indonesia. In the context of accelerating media convergence, the broadcasting industry is faced with the challenge of adapting to technological advancements, new policies, and global dynamics. This research aims to explore the challenges faced in broadcasting regulation in Indonesia, especially in the era of media convergence, with an emphasis on digitalization that changes the way information is conveyed to the public. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative approach, which includes literature studies and in-depth interviews with policymakers and media practitioners in the country. The findings of this study show that although digitalization provides significant opportunities for the growth of the broadcasting industry, various regulatory challenges need to be overcome, such as content control, frequency distribution, and protection of freedom of expression and information access rights for the public. In addition, this study reveals that media convergence requires more adaptive and inclusive regulatory adjustments, involving various stakeholders in formulating policies that support innovation, without ignoring the social and cultural values that exist in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores how Al Jazeera.com frames the Palestine-Israel conflict as part of a broader resistance to dominant global narratives. It focuses on themes of justice, victimhood, and Islamic identity. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) a method developed by Norman Fairclough to examine how language reflects and shapes power dynamics the research analyzes 15 news and opinion articles published during two key periods of heightened conflict: May 2021 and October 2023. The analysis reveals that Al Jazeera consistently presents the conflict not as a balanced clash between equal sides, but as an unequal struggle in which Palestinians face systemic oppression. The platform uses strong terms such as “occupation,” “apartheid,” and “resistance” to highlight this imbalance. Islamic elements appear frequently, both symbolically (e.g., references to the Al-Aqsa Mosque) and conceptually (e.g., calls for ummah, or global Muslim solidarity). The study concludes that Al Jazeera acts not just as a media outlet but also as a discursive agent—shaping public opinion and challenging dominant Western perspectives. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of Islamic worldview and Global South positioning into media discourse analysis of the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Abstract

This article aims to examine how the "I Love Me" movement utilizes social media to challenge conventional beauty standards and promote values of diversity and self-acceptance. The urgency of this research arises from significant issues faced by modern society, where social media often promotes beauty standards that are not only unrealistic but also exclusive and detrimental. These standards can potentially cause body image disorders and social anxiety, especially among teenagers and adults, making this research not only academically relevant but also crucial for public health and social policy. This research employs a qualitative approach with netnographic methods within a constructivist paradigm to understand the dynamics of communication and self-representation on social media related to the "I Love Me" movement. The study was conducted by collecting primary data through the social media analysis application Keyhole, which provides frequency, reach, and types of interactions related to the campaign or hashtag used by the movement. Secondary data were also gathered from various sources including books, scholarly articles, and media reports discussing beauty standards, the influence of social media, and related social movements. Data collection techniques include systematic media observation and documentation, and data analysis was performed using the methods of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which involve data conditioning, categorization, and systematic conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the "I Love Me" movement has successfully created a dialogue that supports physical diversity and promotes mental health by challenging the dominant commercial and harmful beauty narratives. The movement demonstrates its effectiveness in leveraging social media to change beauty perceptions, reduce stress and pressure related to body image, and support self-acceptance and beauty in all forms.

Abstract

The phenomenon of self-diagnosis has become increasingly prevalent among university students, particularly in Medan, Indonesia, where digital information is widely accessible. This study highlights the importance of investigating self-diagnosis practices among students in a local context characterised by diverse socio-cultural backgrounds and a high level of social media usage. The research aims to explore students’ perceptions, focusing on how self-diagnosis affects their mental health and the patterns of acceptance formed around it. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed, involving in-depth interviews with ten purposively selected students from public universities in Medan. Thematic coding was used to analyse the data, guided by Stuart Hall’s audience reception theory, categorising students into dominant, negotiation, and opposition groups. Findings reveal that students with dominant acceptance readily trust unverified online mental health content, while those in negotiation display partial acceptance with cautious evaluation, and the opposition group critically rejects such content in favour of professional consultation. The study contributes to the existing literature by integrating social and digital contexts in understanding self-diagnosis practices and proposes the development of educational interventions and policy recommendations to improve students' critical engagement with digital mental health information.

Abstract

Aceh as a province rich in its Islamic heritage and local culture, is faced with a major challenge in enhancing civic participation through the utilisation of digital technology. This research aims to identify the important role of Acehnese leaders in utilising digital media to strengthen Islamic values and local culture, as well as increase community engagement in the development process. The method used is a qualitative approach through a literature review that focuses on analysing various relevant sources, such as scientific journals, books, and reports related to public communication in Aceh. The results show that Acehnese leaders have successfully utilised social media and other digital platforms to spread religious and cultural messages in line with Islamic teachings, which in turn encourages community participation in various social and political activities. However, challenges remain related to the digital divide and uneven understanding among the public. The findings emphasise the importance of Aceh's leaders in bridging this gap with a more inclusive approach.
