Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of teachers’ inquiry questions of science lessons in the 5th grade of Elementary School on the topic of Water. The method used in this research was a descriptive method and the sample was 16 elementary schools in Sumedang city. The results showed that the profile of inquiry question in the lesson plan document is distributive very low, the question that arises is the questions that require students to make a hypothesis only (5.56%). In the science-learning process, there are four categories of inquiry questions that appear very low in distribution (2.63%). In daily evaluation, the distribution of questions is very low, the questions only require students to hypothesize (6.73%). Based on the above analysis, it can be concluded that the emergence of the teacher inquiry question profile is still uneven and very low. Therefore it is suggested that there is an integrated training program on inquiry learning which includes the preparation of lesson planning, learning activities and science learning evaluation.

Abstract

The concept of air-having pressure needs to be understood by students so that they can understand natural phenomena related to the air concept. The characteristic of the abstract concept of air having pressure leads students to misconceptions. The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in students' conceptions of the air-having pressure concept by using the POE strategy. The research method used was a pre-experiment with one group pretest-posttest design. Pretest and posttest questions were given to students using the five-level diagnostic test instrument with a total of three questions. The ability to predict-test and the ability to observe-test were performed with four questions on each test. The participants of this study consisted of 31 fifth grade students in the even semester. The categorization of conception change is divided into five patterns: construction, revision, static, disorientation, and complementation. Based on the analysis, revision had the highest percentage followed by construction. The conclusion is that the POE strategy can help students in understanding the concept of air-having pressure so that there was a change from misconception to understanding scientific concepts.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying forms of participation and collaboration through RADEC learning and the influencing factors. The subject of this study comprised 32 students (18 males and 14 females) attending an elementary school in Bandung city. Case study with a qualitative approach was employed as the method of the study by utilizing instruments such as observation sheets, student work sheet, and field notes. Obtained data were analyzed using Miles Huberman's (1992) technique with data validation using reference material techniques and methodological triangulation. The results reveal that (1) doing assignments, asking questions, delivering opinions and arguments, giving responses and making conclusion are forms of participation students engage in the classroom, (2) students collaborated through group work, active participation and contribution in the group assignment, listening and discussing  a variety of topics, showing appreciation, matching assignments and work, cooperate to gain ideas and realize them through a respectful and proper decision making, and (3) several factors influence the students’ participation and collaboration, namely confidence, hard work, and teachers’ stimulation. These results signify that RADEC learning is able to stimulate students’ participation and collaboration.

Abstract

Learning obstacles were found in students who studied LCM and GCF. This research aims to develop an initial design in the form of a hypothetical learning trajectory for LCM and GCF using the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explanation, and Create) learning model which is based on obstacles learning findings. This research is part of the design research method. The design research method consists of preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The focus of this research is the preliminary design stage. Based on the results, it is known that students have difficulties in solving questions on LCM and GCF material, namely that students cannot use the concepts of LCM and GCF to solve problems, students tend to think that the concepts of LCM and GCF are only factor trees or procedural factorization, and students do not understand the concepts of LCM and GCF. To overcome these learning obstacles, a hypothetical learning trajectory for the LCM and GCF was prepared using the RADEC learning model which was divided into three meetings. The first meeting was about multiples, common multiple, and LCM. The second meeting was about factors, common factors, and GCF. The third meeting was regarding determining the LCM and GCF using prime factorization. Each learning flow from each meeting is described in the form of HLT which consists of learning objectives, learning activities, and student thinking estimates. The theoretical implications in this research are the new findings of HLT LCM and GCF with the RADEC learning model and practical implications in this research are that HLT can be used as a consideration for teachers in designing LCM and GCF learning by paying attention to students' learning trajectories.

Abstract

The rapid development of science and technology produces consequences on the challenges that will be faced by students. Students need to develop 21st-century skills that include the ability to think critically, creatively, communicatively, and collaboratively. These skills can be obtained through the learning process, but in fact, in the field, there are still many teachers who adopt conventional learning models and tend to be teacher-centered. This kind of learning has an unfavorable impact on students' creativity, activeness, and critical thinking. This can be overcome by using the RADEC learning model. This research aims to find out the learning process that uses the RADEC model to increase student participation and student activeness in learning to foster 21st-century skills. This research uses the systematic literature review method with the PRISMA 2020 model. The 2020 prism model is used to assess the systematic review. The data collection process uses Google Scholar with a range of years 2019-2023. Data searches were carried out with the keyword Use of the RADEC Model in Elementary Schools. The results showed that 21st-century skills are crucial for students to have in facing the progress of modernization now. From the use of the RADEC model, the 21st-century skills that are improved include critical thinking, creativity, communication, and cooperation. In addition, the main challenge of RADEC model learning is if there are students who are not good at reading because the initial syntax of this model is reading. Students are required to be good at reading as an initial capital in finding information. Another challenge is that teachers must be able to analyze well related to the objectives and factors that affect the success of learning. It is hoped that this research can provide new knowledge for readers and can also be used as a reference in using the Radec learning model in schools.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges elementary school students face in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) descriptive writing, a crucial skill often perceived as one of the most complex aspects of language learning. It was conducted on 39 fifth-grade public elementary school students in Pacet sub-district, Bandung Regency, to assess students’ writing abilities through test and non-test instruments. The research employed a descriptive methodology using purposive participant selection on the following criteria: schools that use the Independent curriculum, English is taught by a teacher who is a graduate of English education, and the school is one of the representatives of the sub-district, as determined by the elementary school supervisor. The tests evaluated key aspects of descriptive writing, including format and content, organization and coherence, and sentence construction and vocabulary, while structured questionnaires explored students' difficulties and influencing factors. The study aimed to identify the specific challenges students encounter in writing descriptive texts and uncover factors impacting their performance to inform the development of more effective instructional strategies. The findings show that many students struggle with content development, coherence, and grammar. Corpus analysis reveals frequent issues such as unclear phrasing, code-mixing, and overly brief, highlighting gaps in vocabulary use and sentence construction. Additionally, the questionnaire results revealed that a significant number of students encountered challenges in various aspects of descriptive writing, particularly in vocabulary use, grammar, sentence structure, and idea development. These findings underscore the need for targeted, collaborative, and technology-supported instructional strategies to address students’ specific difficulties and enhance their proficiency and confidence in English descriptive writing.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, and Create (RADEC) learning model in fostering collaboration skills among elementary school students during electricity science lessons. Collaboration is defined as a group effort aimed at achieving a shared goal. A descriptive qualitative research method was employed, involving 24 sixth-grade students from an elementary school in Bandung City, Indonesia. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets. The results indicated that students’ collaboration skills averaged 84% based on observations and 82% based on questionnaire responses, both categorized as good. The assessment was based on indicators of collaboration, including positive interdependence, face-to-face interaction, individual accountability, group communication, and group processes. These findings suggest that the RADEC learning model can serve as a useful approach for teachers to develop students' collaborative abilities. Furthermore, this model promotes student engagement and teamwork, enhancing the overall quality of learning experiences in elementary education.
