Abstract

Research on the manufacture of composite particle board based on natural fiber: coconut fiber (SSK) and banana fiber (SBP) by using PVAc matrix has been conducted. The purpose of this research is to get the physical and mechanical value of standard on composite board based on SNI03-2105-2006The research method is by taking the comparison of banana fiber reinforcing material (SBP) and coco fiber (SSK) in the form of particle size with composition ie (a) SBP 0%: SKK 100% (b) SBP 50%: SKK 50%, (c) SBP 80%: SSK 20, (d) SBP 60%: SSK 40%, (e) SBP 40%: SSK 60%, (f) SBP 20%: SKK 80%, and (g) SBP 100%: SSK 0%.All composite boards consist of 70 % Matrix and 30% fiber. The result of physical properties for density (ρ) ranges from 0.54 gr / cm3 - 0.75 gr / cm3 and for water content (KA) ranges from 10.5% - 13.9%.As for the mechanical properties of the value of modulus rupture (MOR) ranged between 3483.44 kgf / cm2 - 7472,30 kgf / cm2 and elastic modulus value (MOE) ranged between 15981.23 kgf / cm2 - 27243,74 kgf / cm2. Based on the analysis of tredline graphs, both for physical and mechanical properties, it turns out for each composition of natural fibers to give different values. This means that the composition of the SSK-SBP mixture has an influence on the physical properties as well as the mechanical properties of the composite board. The quality of natural fiber-based composite board (SSK and SBP) both physical and mechanical properties have been in accordance with the standard reference SNI 03-02105-2006.

Abstract

Faster drying, higher in drying rate and uniformity in moisture of dried veneer are key factors in assessing successful wood veneer drying. Microwave drying differs from conventional drying in the way that microwave energy causes excitation and friction (dissociation) of water molecules or water in wood, which manifest itself as heat. It is superior penetration and can enhance the rate of moisture evaporation. Heat gun is employed to absorb evaporated wood water from being humid.  In contrast to microwave drying, conventional drying relies on heat conduction from outer surface wood layers towards the inner layers; so that the thicker the wood cross-section the slower the rate of evaporation. Successful wood drying are determined by faster drying, higher drying rate and uniformity in final moisture content. One of key factors in assessing further veneer drying is veneer gluability, which can be evaluated using percentage of wood failure and glueline shear strength.  This research is aimed to investigate the effect of microwave heat gun drying on veneer gluability, using percentage of wood failures and glueline shear strength test as estimators. Three treatments were employed, plywood made of microwave heat gun, conventional and mixed dried-veneers, using ten replicates. The results indicated that no difficulties were found in gluing dried veneer, either pure microwave, conventional or mixed dried veneers. Surprisingly, it is also reported that microwave heat gun drying result in better veneer gluability.

Abstract

The mechanical properties of Lulu (Celtis latifolia Planch.), namely MOE, MOR, compression paralell and perpendicular to grain, respectively, tested on two moisture contents condition. Wood sample was collected from Manokwari Papua Barat. Experiments were designed with factorial nested design experiment. Three factorial treatments were axial of tree, pith to bark of tree, and two moisture contents condition, and four replications were employed. The results show that MOE, MOR, compresion parallel to grain were not significantly different among vertical axis of trees, except for compression perpendicular to grain. From bark to pith, all mechanical wood tested were statistically not different. However, air-dried samples tend to produce higher values for all mechanical wood properties tested. According to Indonesian classification grade, lulu wood (Celtis sp) is classified into class I for MOR, and MOE, whereas class II is for compression parallel to grain. Using its specific gravity, this wood is belonging to the class II or heavy wood. The values of compresion parallel to perpendicular grain is 3.29 higher. In addition, this wood species could be used as alternative contruction housing material , mainly indoor contruction and substituent timbers. Keywords: Lulu (Celtis spp), mechanical properties, moisture contents, Papua Barat

Abstract

Application of microwave technology on the wood industries, mainly wood drying begun shortly after World War II. Full application of microwave technology at production line of wood drying industries is still being adopted in limited scales. This is due to insufficient knowledge or lack of understanding of how microwave dries wood, it consumes huge of electricity, and needs an intensive capital investment.  However, several researchers have begun to conclude that employing microwave technology on wood drying will provide faster drying time, higher in rate of drying and uniformity in moisture content profiles of dried wood and no air pollution.  This research is designed to investigate the application of microwave technology for drying of wood veneer in comparison to conventional drying. Drying attributes consist of moisture profiles of dried veneer, drying time, rate of drying and microwave energy consumption, using two veneer thickness of Radiata pine. The results indicated that microwave technology provides faster drying and results in higher moisture profiles of dies veneer and rate of drying compared to conventional drying
