Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in Indonesia, with central obesity as one of the main risk factors. This community service activity was carried out in Grogol Village, West Jakarta, with anthropometric screening in the form of measuring Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist-to-hip Ratio (WHR) in 67 productive age participants. The measurements were carried out by the Faculty of Medicine team at Tarumanagara University using calibrated standard measuring instruments. The screening results showed that 67.16% of participants were obese based on BMI and 73.13% had high WHR indicating central obesity. Education on healthy eating patterns, increased physical activity, and recommendations for further medical examinations were provided as an effort to prevent stroke and cardiometabolic complications. This simple anthropometric screening approach and health education are expected to increase public awareness and reduce the incidence of stroke, especially in productive age. Abstract

Abstract

There has been a recent increase in the use of screen time by children. Parents nowadays allow their children to use screen time from an early age, which can have a negative impact on their growth and development. Excessive screen time can lead to emotional and behavioral instability, hindering children's ability to interact socially with their surroundings. This is a cross-sectional study conducted in February-March 2024 at five elementary schools in Ciherang Village. Children who meet the inclusion criteria will be given a question about their screen time usage and questionnaire about emotion and behavior problem from the Pediatric Symptom Checklist 17 (PSC-17) questionnaire. A total of 246 children met the inclusion criteria, dominated by girls (52.8%), with median age of 12 years (range 10-14), and an average screen time duration of 121.5 minutes (SD 88.4). A significant correlation was found between screen time duration and attentional disturbance (r: 0.167; p-value: 0.009). However, no significant correlation was found with internalizing, externalizing, and overall PSC-17 subscales. Therefore, it is important for parents to limit their children's screen time to promote their mental health.

Abstract

Background: The ketogenic diet, characterized by high fat, low carbohydrate intake, has garnered significant interest for its impact on body composition. Despite its popularity, the mechanisms and long-term effects of the diet remain subjects of ongoing research and debate within the medical and nutritional science communities. Methods: This review systematically examines peer-reviewed clinical trials, observational studies, and comparative analyses conducted from 2004 to 2024. Studies were selected based on their relevance to the ketogenic diet's effects on body composition, adherence to rigorous methodological standards, and the provision of clear outcome measures related to fat mass, lean muscle mass, and overall weight changes. Results: The review synthesizes findings to elucidate the diet's mechanisms, effects, and comparative performance against other dietary interventions. The ketogenic diet induces metabolic adaptations conducive to fat loss while potentially preserving lean muscle mass, mediated through ketosis and associated hormonal shifts. Comparative analyses suggest that the ketogenic diet may offer distinct advantages in fat reduction compared to low-fat and Mediterranean diets, attributed to its profound effects on metabolic pathways and satiety regulation. However, individual responses vary significantly, influenced by factors such as exercise, diet duration, macronutrient composition, and genetic predispositions. Conclusion: The ketogenic diet emerges as a potent intervention for altering body composition, particularly effective in reducing fat mass. Its unique metabolic and hormonal effects distinguish it from other dietary approaches. Nevertheless, considerations regarding the diet's long-term sustainability, potential risks, and individual variability underscore the need for personalized dietary planning and further research.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines obesity and overweight as a medical condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat. While body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to measure obesity, it has limitations in accounting for differences in body fat distribution. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio on the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease. Various search methods, including indexed sources from Google Scholar, were used to access a diverse range of literature published in the last ten years. The review employed deductive and inductive reasoning to compile and extract relevant information. Deductive reasoning was used to establish a theoretical framework and identify concepts related to waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inductive reasoning was then applied to analyse the literature and draw conclusions based on the accumulated evidence. The study found that waist-to-hip ratio is a valuable indicator of cardiovascular disease risk in people of all ages, regardless of their body mass index. It is particularly useful when other metabolic risk factors such as diabetes, lipoprotein abnormalities, smoking, and hypertension are present. This approach is especially beneficial for identifying patients who may be at risk of cardiovascular disease despite having a normal BMI. Waist-to-hip ratio provides additional insights into central adiposity, which has been linked to various metabolic abnormalities and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Keywords: Obesity, Waist-to-Hip Ratio, Body Mass Index, Central Adiposity, Cardiovascular Risk
