Abstract

Ensuring reliable measurements is crucial for minimising errors in assessments. The assessmentcommunity commonly employs the evaluation of reliability coefficients to estimate the dependability oftest scores. Despite its significance, limited research has explored the relationship between the estimated reliability coefficient and the number of scale points utilised. This study aims to provide valuable insights to practitioners by investigating the optimal number of scale points required for the most accurate reliability coefficient estimation. Using simulated data, the research scrutinises scales with varying points, ranging from 2 to 11. The results reveal a substantial impact of the number of scale points on reliability estimation. The most accurate estimate of reliability is obtained for scales with 8 points. This study helps us understand the optimal number of scale points for reliable measurements and guides future assessment improvements.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the results of KMO MSA analysis, Eigen Value, reliability, and Standard Error Measurement (SEm) between raw scores (original) and standardized scores (rescaling) through the summated rating scaling method on critical reasoning attitudes of vocational students in Yogyakarta City. This study used a quantitative descriptive approach involving 204 private vocational students as subjects. The instrument used to measure critical reasoning attitudes has gone through thorough validity and reliability testing before the research was carried out. The analysis process was carried out by calculating the KMO MSA, Eigen Value, reliability, and SEm values on both raw and standardized scores. The results of the two types of scores were then compared to identify any differences. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the raw score had a KMO MSA of 0.87, reliability of 0.823, and SEm of 0.337. After rescaling, the KMO MSA value decreased slightly to 0.86, the reliability also decreased slightly to 0.821, while the SEm increased to 0.406. Eigenvalue analysis showed that both the raw and standardized scores yielded seven factors with Eigenvalues greater than 1. The differences found between these two types of scores, namely 0.01 for KMO MSA, 0.002 for reliability, and -0.069 for SEm, indicate small but significant changes, especially in terms of the increase in SEm after rescaling, which impacts the level of measurement accuracy.

Abstract

This study investigates the comparative efficacy of Summated Rating Scales (SRS) and traditionalordinal scales (raw Likert-type responses) in measuring critical thinking skills among vocationalstudents, employing Item Response Theory (IRT) to evaluate their psychometric properties.Addressing the limitations of ordinal scales notably inconsistent intervals between responsecategories the research adopts a descriptive quantitative methodology involving 269 students fromstate vocational high schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected using a five-pointLikert scale instrument, validated for content (Aiken’s V = 0.94), and analyzed through two IRTframeworks: Polytomous IRT for unscaled ordinal data and Continuous Response Model (CRM)IRT for SRS-transformed interval data. Key findings reveal that SRS enhances measurementprecision by normalizing response distributions into proportional intervals (e.g., recalibrated scores:0.00, 0.73, 1.46, 2.07, 2.84), thereby resolving issues of unequal category spacing inherent toordinal scales. Polytomous IRT demonstrated robust item fit (e.g., Partial Credit Model fit for 5/6items) and strong difficulty parameter invariance (r = 0.84), yet exhibited instability in abilityestimates (r = 0.37) due to extreme response patterns. Conversely, CRM IRT applied to scaleddata produced stable ability estimates (r = 0.46) and eliminated infinite values in MaximumLikelihood Estimation, underscoring its superiority in handling continuous metrics. However, ordinalscales retained higher consistency in difficulty calibration across subgroups. The study concludesthat integrating SRS with CRM IRT offers a refined approach for critical thinking assessments, balancing precision and fairness, while ordinal scales remain pragmatic for contexts prioritizingsimplicity. These insights advocate for the adoption of advanced scaling techniques in vocationaleducation to improve the validity of competency evaluations, with recommendations for futureresearch to explore hybrid models and longitudinal applications.

Abstract

In item response theory, the number of response categories used in polytomous scoring has an effect on the fit of the model used. When the initial scoring model yields unsatisfactory estimates, corrections to the initial scoring model need to be made. This exploratory descriptive study used response data from Take Home Exam (THE) participants in the Statistical Methods I course organized by the Open University, Indonesia, in 2022. The stages of data analysis include coding the rater’s score; analyzing frequency; analyze the fit of the model based on graded, partial, and generalized partial credit models; analyze the characteristic response function (CRF) curve; scoring correction (rescaling); and re-analyze the fit of the model. The fit of the model is based on the chi-square test and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). All model fit analyzes were performed by using R. The results revealed that scoring corrections had an effect on model fit and that the partial credit model (PCM) produced the best item parameter estimates. All results and their implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is one of the components that is of concern to the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM). This policy is an effort by the Ministry of Education and Culture to overcome the low literacy skills of students, and the faktors that cause it. Multistage Adaptive Test (MSAT) is used as an assessment method in AKM. The MSAT was developed with the IRT concept. The purpose of this article is to apply Item Respons Theory (IRT) to calibrate mathematical literacy instrumens and utilize the calibration result item parameters to estimate scores for mathematical literacy skills. Many items in the instrumen used are 15 multiple choice items. Respondents were used as many as 66 grade 8 junior high school students. After going through the construct validation process using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), 2 items did not meet, because they had a low loading factor, and 13 items were used for the calibration process. The grain calibration and scoring processes were carried out using the R package Mirt program. The calibration results show that the instrument matches the Rasch model. All assumptions of unidimensional IRT are proven to be met, so there is no violation in estimating item parameters. The item parameter is the level of difficulty where there is one item that does not fit, namely item 3. The intersection of the information function and the standard error shows that the instrument will provide accurate information if it is used by students with abilities of -2.965 to 1.085. The resulting item parameters can be used to estimate the algebra content math literacy score.
