Abstract

Analysis of item characteristics on test instruments is carried out to determine high-quality items. This study aims to describe the parameters of specialized high school mathematics test items using the IRT approach. It is an exploratory descriptive study employing a quantitative approach. The research subjects were 36 students of grade XI high school who took the specialization mathematics subject. Response data with dichotomous scoring were analyzed using the IRT approach with the R program to obtain information about item parameters and student ability. The results of the model fit test showed that most of the specialization mathematics exam items fit the Rasch model. The results showed that all items met the criteria of good quality because they had good difficulty parameters. Relatively, the test items were suitable for students with abilities between -2.6 and 2.8 logits. This estimation is also supported by the TIF with a maximum value of 3.049 at 0.08 logit ability and SEM of 0.541. Test items that have been proven to be of high quality can be used as examples in both teaching and diagnostic assessments. Further research could consider the discrimination parameter when analyzing the characteristics of the questions.

Abstract

Student success can be defined based on the period of study taken until graduation from college. Machine learning can be used to predict the factors that are thought to influence student success. To achieve optimal machine learning model performance, attention is needed on the sample size. This study aims to determine the effect of student sample size on the stability of model performance to predict student success. This research is quantitative. The data used is student data from a university in Yogyakarta from 2014 to 2019, totaling 19061 students. The target variable is the student study period in months, while the predictor variables are college entrance pathways, GPA from semester 1 to semester 6, and family socioeconomic conditions based on the father’s and mother’s income. This research uses the XGBoost model with the best hyperparameters and the bootstrap approach. Bootstrapping was performed on the original data by sampling twenty different sample sizes: 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000, 2250, 2500, 2750, 3000, 3250, 3500, 3750, 4000, 4250, 4500, 4750, and 5000. The resulting bootstrap samples were replicated ten times. Model performance evaluation uses the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value. The result of this research is the XGBoost model with the best hyperparameters, obtained through the training data division scheme of 90% and testing data of 10%, which has the smallest RMSE value of 8.318. The model uses the best hyperparameters: n_estimators of 75, max_depth of 8, min_child_weight of 5, eta of 0.07, gamma of 0.2, subsample of 0.8, and colsample_bylevel of 1. The XGBoost model with optimal hyperparameters demonstrates peak performance stability at a sample size of 1750 students, as evidenced by consistent RMSE values across 10 bootstrap replications, confirming that this data quantity provides the ideal balance between prediction accuracy and stability for estimating study duration.

Abstract

This research is related to Item Response Theory (IRT), which is essential for determining the best method for estimating participants' abilities on a test measuring English listening ability. This study aims to (1) determine the characteristics of the test device measuring English listening ability, (2) determine the effect of the length of the test on the stability of the ability estimation using the maximum likelihood (ML) method, (3) determine the effect of test length on the stability of the ability estimation using the Bayes method, and (4) compare the stability of the ability estimate between ML and Bayes. This research is an exploratory descriptive study using a simulation approach. The best model is selected to generate data. The result of the generation is the actual ability (θ) and the participant's response, which is estimated with the maximum likelihood and Bayes, which produces the estimated ability with 10 replications, and is compared with calculating the MSE (mean square error). The method with a smaller MSE is stable and has a better estimation method. The results show that (1) the 2PL model is the best, (2) the length of the test affects the stability of the ability estimation in the ML method and the most stable case when the test contains 46 items, (3) the length of the test affects the stability of the ability estimate in the Bayes method and it is most stable when the test contains 46 items, and (4) the Bayes method is better and more accurate for estimating ability.

Abstract

Students often have trouble developing their math reasoning skills to the fullest because they don't have the habit of thinking reflectively and don't have strong connections between math concepts. This problem shows the need for learning that can systematically integrate habits of mind and mathematical connections into students' thinking processes. This study aims to analyze in depth the direct and indirect effects of habits of mind on mathematical reasoning skills through students' mathematical connections in 10th grade high school. This is a quantitative study with an ex-post facto design. The research subjects consist of 342 students as the main sample. Data were collected using instruments in the form of a mathematical connection ability test, a mathematical reasoning ability test, and a habits of mind questionnaire. The instruments underwent content validity testing, reliability testing, and item characteristic analysis using Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Item Response Theory. The data analysis techniques used were regression analysis and path analysis to examine the causal relationships between variables directly and indirectly. The analysis results indicate a significant direct effect of habits of mind on students' mathematical connection abilities. The findings of this study suggest that habits of mind play a crucial role in enhancing students' mathematical reasoning abilities indirectly through the strengthening of mathematical connections. This finding underscores the importance of integrating affective and cognitive aspects in mathematics education. The implications of this study are that teachers need to design learning strategies that can foster habits of mind.

Abstract

In certain situations, it may be challenging to fully exploit the advantages of modern test theory, including Rasch modeling and item response theory (IRT), when applied to real data. Although Rasch modeling tends to be more robust than IRT for small sample sizes, it still requires that the assumptions of unidimensionality and local independence be satisfied. In practice, these assumptions are often violated, which can lead to less accurate analyses and reduced validity of the results. Deep-Rasch, which integrates deep learning with Rasch modeling, has been proposed as an alternative measurement framework to overcome these limitations. This study examines the potential of Deep-Rasch as an alternative to Rasch modeling using student response data from 17 final semester examinations at Universitas Terbuka (UT), with sample sizes ranging from 33 to 11,504 students. Most examinations consisted of 30 multiple-choice items. The analyses showed that several datasets violated one or both assumptions of Rasch modeling. Nevertheless, Deep-Rasch performed comparably to conventional Rasch modeling in estimating item difficulty and student ability parameters, as well as in predicting student responses. Remarkably, for the smallest sample size (\emph{n} = 33), Deep-Rasch exhibited slightly better performance than Rasch modeling.

Abstract

Many implementations of cooperative learning have been carried out, but the selection of cooperative learning models still needs to be investigated. This study aims to determine the effect of cooperative learning models such as the Group Investigation (GI) model, Student Team Achievement Division (STAD), and Jigsaw on critical and creative thinking skills in science learning in fourth-grade students in elementary school. The research uses a quantitative research approach. The research sample was randomly selected from 75 fourth-grade elementary school students. Data were collected by using the critical and creative thinking skills test method. The test instrument is structured with indicators of critical and creative thinking variables which are applied in the study of science learning. The research instrument is in the form of a description test that has met the validity and reliability tests. The technique of data analysis was done with a Multivariate Analysis Of Variance. The results show that the critical and creative thinking skills obtained sig. of 0.001 <0.05, which means that the cooperative learning model significantly affects critical and creative thinking skills multivariate. Meanwhile, post hoc testing shows that the GI model is superior for improving critical and creative thinking skills. Keywords:  Cooperative learning model, Critical thinking skills, Creative thinking

Abstract

Data is the primary source to scaffold physics teaching and learning for teachers and students, mainly reported through in-class assessment. Machine learning (ML) is an axis of artificial intelligence (AI) study that immensely attracts the development of physics education research (PER). ML is built to predict students’ learning that can support students’ success in an effective physics achievement. In this paper, two ML algorithms, logistic regression and random forest, were trained and compared to predict students’ achievement in high school physics (N = 197). Data on students’ achievement was harvested from in-class assessments administered by a physics teacher regarding knowledge (cognitive) and psychomotor during the 2020/2021 academic year. Three assessment points of knowledge and psychomotor were employed to predict students’ achievement on a dichotomous scale on the final term examination. Combining in-class assessment of knowledge and psychomotor, we could discover the plausible performance of students’ achievement prediction using the two algorithms. Knowledge assessment was a determinant in predicting high school physics students’ achievement. Findings reported by this paper recommended open room for the implementation of ML for educational practice and its potential contribution to supporting physics teaching and learning.

Abstract

In an exemplary test implementation, the items used should be fair and free from bias. This biased content threatens the validity that will affect the interpretation of the test results. This study aims to analyze the biased content of items and tests on the test device for the Commercial English Course, with the code ADBI4201, a course in the Business Administration Study Program at the Faculty of Law, Social, and Political Sciences, Open University (UT). It uses the quantitative approach. Data were collected through documentation in the form of grids and responses from final semester test participants in January 2024. Data analysis was carried out by (1) estimating item parameters using classical test theory and item response theory for tests, (2) estimating item parameters based on regional groups and based on gender, which are used to identify DIF content, (3) testing the significance of DIF with a maximum likelihood comparison. The study's findings showed 26 items contained DIF by gender and 25 items contained DIF by region. The results of the test bias detection showed that the test slightly favored the female group and the students from the Java region.

Abstract

The complexity of the IRT analysis makes it difficult to perform manually, therefore requiring easy-to-use software. While many software options exist for IRT analysis, the high cost of paid software can make it inaccessible for many students and lecturers in Indonesia. While the mirt package provides a complete, free option for IRT analysis, proficiency in the R programming language is required. This study aims to develop an R package for IRT analysis, equipped with a user-friendly interface based on the mirt package, designed to be easy to use for beginners in IRT analysis. The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) model is used for development and includes five stages: Planning, Analysis, Design, Implementation, and System. The resulting package is named irtawsi and includes functionality comparable to paid software. This package can calibrate both test and non-test instruments using various IRT models, such as the Rasch, 2PL, 3PL, 4PL, GRM, PCM, and GPCM models. The irtawsi package functionality includes: (1) an easy-to-use user interface, (2) automatic interpretation of analysis results, (3) a guide for IRT analysis, (4) recommendations when assumptions are not met, (5) an HTML report format for analysis results,(6) support for two languages (Indonesian and English), (7) it is free, and (8) can be installed on Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. The results of this development contribute to the calibration process, making it easier for practitioners and researchers to calibrate the instruments being developed, especially for beginners who are learning IRT.
