Abstract

This meta-analysis examines the effectiveness of multi-contextual approaches in mathematics learning and explores moderator variables that influence their impact. A total of 27 effect sizes from 14 empirical studies (2015–2023) involving 2,501 students were analyzed using a random effects model via R Studio. Studies were sourced from major academic databases, including ERIC, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The analysis yielded an overall effect size of 0.65 (p < 0.0001), indicating a substantial impact on students’ mathematical abilities. Moderator analysis revealed that educational level, instructional model combinations, and geographic region significantly influenced effectiveness, while sample size did not. Notably, integrating mathematics with technology and Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) produced the highest effect sizes. These findings support multi-contextual strategies to enhance mathematics learning outcomes and offer valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and researchers. The study also highlights the need for future research across diverse educational settings to refine and contextualize effective practices. The study encourages educators to adopt culturally and technologically relevant teaching practices. It also calls for policy support in scaling contextual learning models and investing in teacher training across educational settings.

Abstract

The use of polytomous data in test instruments enables more detailed assessment of test-takers' abilities, but group differences, such as gender, class, and ethnicity, are often overlooked. Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analysis helps determine whether these identities influence test performance. This descriptive quantitative study examines DIF in geometry tests using Holistic and Analytical Scoring Rubrics across gender, class, and ethnic groups. The study involved 102 undergraduate students from Cenderawasih University, Papua, who completed a geometry test with 10 descriptive questions. Two scoring rubrics were used: the Holistic Scoring Rubric with three categories and the Analytical Scoring Rubric with five. Results were analyzed with the difR package in the R Program. The criterion for detecting DIF is a p-value less than 0.05. Findings show that some test items exhibit DIF concerning gender, class, and ethnicity. The DIF detected for the holistic scoring rubric is items 1, 6, 7, and 10 for the gender group; items 1, 4, 5, and 8 for the class group; and items 1, 2, and 6 for the ethnic group. Meanwhile, the DIF detected for the analytic scoring rubric is item 10 for the gender group; items 9 and 10 for the class group; and item 10 for the ethnic group. However, not all DIF items are flawed; some assess fundamental skills. The Analytical Rubric demonstrated slightly higher reliability (alpha 0.903) than the Holistic Rubric (alpha 0.804). These insights support the development of more equitable and sustainable assessment practices, ensuring fairness and inclusivity in educational evaluations.

Abstract

Abstract Collaborative skills are becoming mandatory in the 21st century. There have been many studies that show the effectiveness of the collaborative learning (CL) approach on students' collaboration and interaction abilities. In Indonesia, through the implementation of 2013 curriculum, group learning is encouraged. This study aims to describe the implementation of collaborative learning by describing the teachers' understanding of collaborative skills and collaborative learning models, the strategies teachers use to teach collaborative skills, and the constraints that prevent teachers from using collaborative learning models. This qualitative research involved 13 elementary school teachers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using the Bogdan and Biklen models. The results show that 1) the teachers' understanding of collaborative skills still needs to be improved, especially in the collaboration aspect, 2) the teachers' knowledge about collaborative learning models is still lacking, 3) the obstacles that cause teachers not to use CL are teachers' lack of knowledge, teachers’ lack of motivation to improve their knowledge, teachers’ hesitance to try new learning models, and teachers' concerns that it will be difficult for students to use CL. Therefore, the teachers need to increase their understanding and open themselves to new learning models. This can be a concern for principals and teacher education managers to provide intensive education and training related to collaborative learning approach.Keyword: collaborative learning, teachers’ understanding, elementary schools. AbstractKeterampilan kolaboratif menjadi keterampilan wajib di abad ke-21.
