Abstract

This research aims to understand a phenomenon regarding high school students’ errors in solving mathematics problems using a qualitative approach with phenomenology as the analysis framework. Data were collected through tests, classroom observations, documentation (students’ answer sheets, list of attendees, and students’ score lists), and unstructured phenomenological interviews with four purposively selected participants who met the selection criteria. The researchers used the mathematical problem-solving (MPS) model by Rott-Specht-Knipping and Aguas’ phenomenological data analysis steps using the NVIVO 12 software to analyze the students’ MPS process and identify their errors and the factors contributing to these errors. Errors were predominantly found in problems solved without engaging in the exploration phase. Analysis errors were the most common, while errors due to carelessness were the rarest. Factors contributing to these errors were identified across five domains: MPS Ability (MPSA), cognition, affection, motivation, and self-awareness. This research provides valuable insights into student errors in MPS for researchers and educators, particularly teachers, and provides recommendations for mathematics education policies and future research.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the canonical relationship between positive and negative attitudes of economics and business students when using computer-based analytical tools. The subjects of this study were students of the Faculty of Economics and Business in Medan. Samples were taken from two universities, including state universities and private universities. Using a random sampling technique, this study collected 247 responses, consisting of 47 male and 200 female respondents. The data in this study were collected using a questionnaire with a 5-Likert scale and analyzed by canonical correlation. The results of the canonical correlation analysis in this study revealed that Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceive Enjoyment (PE) were critical predictors of the construct set of positive attitudes. At the same time, Strain (ST) and Negative Affectivity (NA) were essential predictors of the formation of negative attitudes among users when using computer-based statistical tools. This study produces a new insight related to attitude toward Information Technology (IT) in a specific task, namely statistical analysis. This study also has practical recommendations for universities and lecturers to invest in and use statistical software that is easy and convenient for teaching statistics.

Abstract

Questionnaires are commonly utilized on educational research. However, studies on Differential Item Functioning (DIF) and calibration using Rasch Models are still limited. Therefore, a Self-regulated Learning questionnaire was developed which aims to determine the ability of students to regulate themselves to achieve learning goals. The instrument consists of twelve items. The involved participants were 300 students who enrolled in first-year to fourth-year. Data were analyzed using Racsh Model Analysis with Winsteps 4.5.2 software. As a result, there are four items that were not fit, so that, therefore should be eliminated or revised. The DIF analysis found that gender bias was unidentified, but long-study bias was detected for items number one and six. The reliability value of the item is categorized as very good (0.99), which indicates that the instrument has sufficient consistency/reliability. While, the function curve showed that the items on the self-regulated learning questionnaire produce optimal information in individuals with moderate (θ) ability. Overall, self-regulated learning questionnaires have to be revised then tested on different sample groups. In addition, longitudinal and cross-sectional research is necessary to determine the level of self-regulated learning of students more comprehensively.

Abstract

This meta-analysis examines the effectiveness of multi-contextual approaches in mathematics learning and explores moderator variables that influence their impact. A total of 27 effect sizes from 14 empirical studies (2015–2023) involving 2,501 students were analyzed using a random effects model via R Studio. Studies were sourced from major academic databases, including ERIC, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The analysis yielded an overall effect size of 0.65 (p < 0.0001), indicating a substantial impact on students’ mathematical abilities. Moderator analysis revealed that educational level, instructional model combinations, and geographic region significantly influenced effectiveness, while sample size did not. Notably, integrating mathematics with technology and Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) produced the highest effect sizes. These findings support multi-contextual strategies to enhance mathematics learning outcomes and offer valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and researchers. The study also highlights the need for future research across diverse educational settings to refine and contextualize effective practices. The study encourages educators to adopt culturally and technologically relevant teaching practices. It also calls for policy support in scaling contextual learning models and investing in teacher training across educational settings.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the characteristics of Indonesian language test used in the national standardized school examinations (Ujian Sekolah Berstandar Nasional, USBN). We used the response data of 218 students from a public senior high school in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to the test consisting of two packages, A and B, in the 2018/2019 academic year to investigate the characteristics of the test and its items. Quantitative analysis using classical test theory (CTT) and one-parameter logistic item response theory (1-PL IRT) model was conducted to investigate the characteristics of the test and its items based on difficulty and discriminating power. The results of the study under the CTT showed that most test items in both package A and package B have difficulty in the easy category and the portion of items in the difficult category is no more than 10%. In addition, while the majority of test items in both test packages demonstrated good discriminating power, package B contained a high number of items with poor discriminating power (47.5%). Under 1-PL IRT, our study results indicated the dominance of items with difficulty level in the moderate category in both test packages. In addition to revealing the difficulty level of the test items, our study showed that the items in the difficult category under CTT and IRT were related to the topics of types of conjunction; spelling, grammar, and sentence structure; job application letter; and observation report text and its structure. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving the quality of the Indonesian language test and the quality of learning on topics where students have difficulty based on test items in the difficult category.

Abstract

Many things should be done to prepare prospective teachers for providing qualified teachers. The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing teachers, including prospective teachers, to improve competency and online teaching activities. This quantitative research aims to map the readiness of prospective-teacher students of Office Administration (OA) Department related to online learning by measuring their teaching competencies and learning activities. These two variables are considered capable of measuring online teaching readiness. The research sample is 72 students. The data were collected using a questionnaire distributed via a Google Form and analyzed using K-Means with SPSS 24.0 software. The results showed that the number of clusters at low readiness level was 11 students (10 female and one male) or 15%, the number of clusters at moderate readiness level was 38 students (32 female and six male) or 53%, and the number of clusters at moderate level high readiness was 23 students (18 female and five male) or 32%. These findings show that the OA Department's prospective teachers still need to be provided with online teaching materials or skills, considering that only 32% of respondents have a high level of readiness for online learning. The community is the indicator that needs improvement for OA Department prospective teachers' readiness. It can be pursued by forming the latest and most trusted community.

Abstract

Three popular models are used to describe the characteristics of the test items and estimate the ability of examinees under the dichotomous IRT model, namely the one-, two-, and three-parameter logistic models. The three-item parameters are discriminating power, difficulty, and pseudo-guessing. In the development of the dichotomous IRT model, carelessness or upper asymptote parameter was proposed, which forms a four-parameter logistic (4PL) model to accommodate a condition where a high-ability examinee gives an incorrect response to a test item when he/she should be able to respond to the test item correctly. However, the carelessness parameter and the 4PL model have not been widely accepted and used due to several factors, and people's understanding of that parameter and strategies for estimating it is still inadequate. Therefore, this study aims to shed light on ideas underlying the 4PL model, the meaning of the carelessness parameter, and strategies used to estimate that parameter based on the extant literature. The focus of this study was then extended to demonstrating practical examples of estimating item and person parameters using the 4PL model using empirical data on responses of 1,000 students from the Indonesia Open University (Universitas Terbuka) on 21 of 30 multiple-choice items on the Business English test, a paper-and-pencil test. We mainly analyzed empirical data using the "˜mirt' package in RStudio. We present the analysis results coherently so that IRT users would have a sufficient understanding of the 4PL model and the carelessness parameter, and they can estimate item and person parameters under the 4PL model.

Abstract

This research is related to item response theory (IRT) which is needed to measure the goodness of a test set, while item parameter estimation is needed to determine the technical properties of a test item. Stability of item parameter estimation is conducted to determine the minimum sample that can be used to obtain good item parameter estimation results. The purpose of this study is to describe the effect of the number of test takers on the stability of item parameter estimation with the Bayes method (expected a posteriori, EAP) on dichotomous data. This research is an exploratory descriptive research with a bootstrap approach using the EAP method. The EAP method is performed by modifying the likelihood and function to include prior information about the participant's 9 score. Bootstrapping on the original data is done to take bootstrap samples. with ten different sample sizes of 100, 150, 250, 300, 500, 700, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 were then replicated ten times and grain parameter estimation was performed. Each sample data with ten replications was calculated Root Mean Squared Difference (RMSD) value. The results showed that the 2PL model was chosen as the best model. The RMSD value obtained proves that many test participants affect the stability of item parameter estimation on dichotomous data with the 2PL model. The minimum sample to ensure the stability of item parameter estimates with the 2PL model is 1,000 test participants.
