Abstract

This study aims to test the effectiveness of group counseling services using the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) approach in reducing students' anxiety facing college entrance exams. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects were 14 students of grade XII of SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang who had moderate to high levels of anxiety based on the initial measurement results. Data were collected using the College Entrance Exam Anxiety Scale developed to cover three main dimensions: emotional, cognitive, and physiological anxiety. This scale consists of 37 valid statements with a Cronbach's Alpha reliability value of 0.93, indicating a very high level of reliability. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov 2 Independent Samples Test with the help of SPSS version 26.0. The results showed a Z value = -2.36 and p = 0.01 (p < 0.05) in the experimental group, which means there was a significant difference between the anxiety levels before and after treatment. Meanwhile, there were no significant differences in the control group. These results demonstrate that group counseling services using the REBT approach are effective in reducing student anxiety, particularly in the emotional, cognitive, and physiological aspects. This approach helps students think more rationally, manage their emotions, and reduce physical symptoms of anxiety leading up to college entrance exams.

Abstract

Interest and aptitude tests help in recognizing children's potential early on, so that parents and educators can plan education that is more suitable and supports the optimal development of children's potential. The purpose of this study is to help individuals know that interest and aptitude test instrumentation has a major impact in directing individuals in developing themselves, both in academics and careers. Children who study and work according to their interests tend to be more motivated, happy and accomplished. With a clear understanding of interests and aptitudes, children can make better decisions regarding future education, major and career choices. In this study we used the Literature Review method by collecting several sources. The results and discussion of the literature review discussion regarding interest tests, interest inventories, and Android-based psychological test applications in guidance and counseling in schools show that these tools are very important to help students determine educational and career paths according to their interests and talents. Interest tests help reduce uncertainty in career decision-making, improve the fit between individuals and jobs or study programs, and expand understanding of the psychological tendencies underlying their choices.

Abstract

Academic stress is one of the main problems faced by university students, especially in the context of increasingly digitised learning. This study aims to analyse the roles of social support and digital competence in academic stress, and to test the function of academic self-efficacy as a mediating and moderating variable in this relationship. This study uses a quantitative, survey-based approach, involving 888 students as respondents. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analysed using Partial Least Squares-based Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results show that social support significantly affects digital competence and academic self-efficacy. Digital competence and academic self-efficacy also have significant effects on academic stress, but in opposite directions. Mediation analysis revealed that social support has multiple indirect mechanisms for academic stress via digital competence and academic self-efficacy. In addition, the moderation results showed that academic self-efficacy can alter the strength of the relationship between social support and digital competence in relation to academic stress. These findings confirm that student academic stress is influenced by the complex interaction between social, psychological, and digital factors. This study contributes to the development of a conceptual model of academic stress and provides practical implications for strengthening guidance and counselling services in higher education.

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is a prevalent emotional barrier that negatively affects students’ academic performance, motivation, and engagement in mathematics learning. School counselors play a crucial role in addressing this issue through effective and evidence-based interventions. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), an integrative counseling approach combining cognitive, emotional, and somatic components, has shown promise in reducing anxiety; however, empirical evidence within school-based group counseling contexts remains limited. This study employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent pretest–posttest control group design to examine the effectiveness of EFT-based group counseling in reducing mathematics anxiety among high school students in Indonesia. Nineteen students with moderate to high levels of mathematics anxiety were selected through purposive sampling and assigned to an experimental group (n = 9) and a control group (n = 10). The experimental group participated in six weekly EFT-based group counseling sessions, while the control group received no specialized intervention. Mathematics anxiety was measured using an adapted Mathematics Anxiety Scale. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and the Mann–Whitney U Test. The results indicated a statistically significant reduction in mathematics anxiety in the experimental group following the intervention (p 0.05), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. Posttest comparisons revealed a significant difference between the two groups, favoring the experimental group. These findings suggest that EFT-based group counseling is a potentially effective intervention for reducing mathematics anxiety among high school students. Further research with larger samples, randomized designs, and longitudinal follow-up is recommended to strengthen the evidence base and generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

Selecting a university major represents a pivotal developmental task for senior high school students, yet many struggle with uncertainty regarding their academic capabilities. Within this context, self-efficacy, the belief in one's capacity to execute actions necessary to achieve specific goals, plays a critical role in facilitating informed and confident decision-making. This study examines the potential effectiveness of a group guidance intervention integrating Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) principles with role-playing techniques to enhance students' self-efficacy in major selection. Employing a quasi-experimental nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design, the study involved 11th-grade students at SMAN 20 Batam. Ten participants with moderate baseline self-efficacy levels were assigned to the experimental group through purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a self-efficacy questionnaire adapted from Bandura's (1999) theoretical framework, and analyzed via the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. It is important to note that the results presented herein are based on simulated data, intended to illustrate the proposed analytical procedure and intervention design. Simulation outcomes indicated a statistically significant improvement in self-efficacy scores within the experimental group (p = 0.012), whereas the control group showed no meaningful change (p = 0.230). These findings suggest that CBT-based group guidance incorporating role-playing may serve as a promising strategy for fostering students' confidence in academic decision-making. Practically, this approach offers school counselors and educators a structured, theory-informed module to support adolescents during a critical transitional period. Future research with fully implemented empirical data and larger, randomized samples is recommended to validate these preliminary insights.

Abstract

Navigating the transition from vocational education to industry requires robust self-direction, yet many students exhibit passive behaviors and anxiety during industrial work practices. This gap between structured schooling and industrial independence hinders work readiness. This study evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral-based psychoeducation in enhancing self-direction among learners. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, the study involved 20 Grade XII Computer Network students at SMKN 6 Batam, selected via purposive sampling for moderate self-direction levels. Data were collected using a validated self-direction scale and analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks and N-Gain tests. Results demonstrated a significant improvement, with mean scores rising from 91.90 (moderate) to 129.80 (high). Wilcoxon test confirmed statistical significance (Z = -3.920, p = 0.000), while the N-Gain score of 0.94 indicated high intervention effectiveness. Findings suggest that behavioral-based psychoeducation, leveraging positive reinforcement and self-management, fosters student autonomy. Consequently, integrating psychological interventions into pre-internship preparation programs is crucial for bridging the school-industry gap. This research underscores the necessity of holistic support systems in vocational education to ensure students possess psychological resilience and directional clarity required for successful industrial adaptation and career stability in a competitive labor market. Thus, educators must prioritize mental readiness alongside technical skills to optimize outcomes.
