Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the work environment and workload on employee morale. The population comprises all employees of Tokopedia Pedurungan Semarang, divided into three divisions: seller, buying, and digital, with a sample of 72 respondents. The sampling technique used is proportional stratified random sampling. The data source is primary data, collected using a questionnaire. The data analysis technique employed is multiple linear regression. The hypothesis tests show that both the work environment and the workload have a statistically significant positive effect on employee morale, indicating that improvements in these factors are associated with higher morale. The coefficient of determination is 0.534, indicating that the work environment and workload account for 53.4 percent of the variance in work morale. This study concluded that both the work environment and workload contribute positively to employees' morale. Further research is warranted, particularly regarding other factors influencing work morale.

Abstract

The hotel industry’s demands on graduates from the hotel department in vocational school are high. However, graduates’ communication skills using English are still low because imbalance between English learning materials and workplace realities. This study aims to identify the needs of authentic English learning materials that align with industry language expectations. This explanatory sequential mixed-method design involved 62 hotel department students, 5 English teachers, and five hotel stakeholders in Padang, Indonesia. Questionnaires, interview guidelines, and focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to gather the quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the thematic analysis was used for qualitative data. The results of this study indicate that both oral (e.g., greeting guests, managing complaints, and handling reservations) and written communication (e.g., confirmation emails and service reports) were highly prioritized for the hotel industry. Additionally, the vital authentic resources needed to be learned by students included reservation forms, brochures, guest service videos, and business emails. These findings highlight that teachers need to foster student engagement and professional competence by shifting from textbook-based to real-task-driven approaches to teach English in the hotel department of vocational schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the requisite skills for Differentiated instruction (DI) implementation and to identify best practices across school levels. Differentiated instruction (DI) for deeper learning is essential for responding to students’ diverse needs. Using 112 self-reported essays, interviews, videotaped practices, and experts meeting, this study employed Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) to capture the knowledge experts use to carry out differentiation. The results revealed a 4:9:2 skill formula across the preparation, implementation, and evaluation phases. Notable differences across school levels emerged. In the preparation phase, primary and secondary school teachers prepared varied materials (34%) and grouping strategies (44%), whereas only a few kindergarten teachers (3%) employed these strategies. In the implementation phase, most primary (68%) and secondary (79%) teachers tailored materials to students' learning styles by offering content in multiple formats; however, only a small proportion of kindergarten teachers (26%) differentiated content, focusing instead on process differentiation and additional learning support. Despite the differing contexts, the study also identified cross-level similarities. Future research should investigate the long-term impacts of DI on student achievement and engagement, as well as examine DI practices in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) is a common phacoemulsification procedure for senile cataracts. The size, location, and incision type significantly influence the SIA degree. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a superior incision on astigmatism levels in patients both before and after phacoemulsification for senile cataracts. This retrospective analytical observational study utilized a cohort at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital, Semarang, Indonesia, between November 2023 and May 2024. The accessible population consisted of patients treated during the study period. A total of 65 eyes from patients who underwent phacoemulsification with a superior incision were included in the study. Twenty-five patients (38.5%) exhibited against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism before the surgical procedure, which decreased to 16 patients (24.6%) following surgery. In contrast, after phacoemulsification with a superior incision, the number of patients with with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism increased from 61.5% to 75.4%. The astigmatism value before phacoemulsification with a superior incision was 1.274±1.02, while the value was 0.945±1,02 afterwards. The Wilcoxon Test revealed a significant difference (p<0.05) in the mean of astigmatism values before and after the procedure with a superior incision, indicating the surgical effect on reducing astigmatism. This study confirms that phacoemulsification using a superior incision significantly reduces postoperative astigmatism, particularly in patients with WTR astigmatism. Combining small incisions and sutureless techniques enhances corneal stability, accelerates healing, and improves surgical outcomes.

Abstract

Student learning success is determined not only by the way teachers teach at school, but also by the active role of parents in supporting the learning process. This study aims to measure the impact of collaboration between parents and teachers on improving student achievement. From various articles analyzed, relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025 were selected. The results indicate that regular communication, parental involvement in school activities, and collaboration between teachers and parents in monitoring and guiding students' learning progress significantly contribute to their academic achievement. Thus, organized and structured collaboration between families and schools can increase student learning participation and improve academic and non-academic achievement. The results of this study emphasize the importance of clear communication mechanisms, parental involvement programs, and joint planning between teachers and families to optimize student learning outcomes. Some recommended practical implementations include communication training for teachers and parents, regular meeting schedules, and joint evaluation of learning strategies used.

Abstract

Effective communication between teachers and students is a crucial foundation for determining learning outcomes and is integral to the transformative education process. This communication function goes beyond ordinary instruction, serving as a bridge that builds academic understanding and emotional support. Open communication encourages students to ask questions and provide feedback, allowing teachers to adjust their teaching. Meanwhile, empathetic communication creates a psychologically safe classroom environment and teaches interpersonal soft skills. This study used a literature review method, selecting 20 relevant articles from 200 articles found, focusing on publications from 2020 to 2025. The results show that effective communication is vital for building good teacher-student relationships and supporting learning. This communication is characterized by a two-way flow of information, facilitating understanding, and changing attitudes. Its implementation is based on three foundations: seven fundamental elements of communication, five principles of quality assurance (such as clarity and accuracy), and five strategic approaches. Effective communication significantly improves student learning outcomes in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. It serves as a catalyst in realizing the holistic educational goal of producing a generation that is knowledgeable, skilled, and virtuous. Communication barriers (different perceptions, emotional reactions) can be overcome through an integrated framework of teacher professionalism, including the development of pedagogical competencies, differentiated learning, and a culture of reflection. Thus, investing in improving teachers' educational communication competencies is a strategic step towards creating a generation that is intelligent and has strong character

Abstract

Background: UVB exposure increases reactive oxygen species leading to higher expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), which accelerate photoaging. Kelakai leaf (Stenochlaena palustris) contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, yet its efficacy in serum formulations has not been evaluated. Purpose: To determine the effect of kelakai leaf extract serum on VEGF and IL-6 expression in BALB/c mice exposed to subchronic UVB radiation. Method: This experimental post-test only control group study used 30 BALB/c mice assigned to five groups: healthy control (K1), UVB-exposed negative control (K2), UVB + 0.025% retinoid serum (K3), UVB + 2% kelakai serum (K4), and UVB + 4% kelakai serum (K5). UVB exposure (160 mJ/cm²) was given for 14 days followed by topical treatment. Skin tissues were examined using immunohistochemistry to assess VEGF and IL-6 expression. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by Mann–Whitney. Results: VEGF and IL-6 expression were highest in K2 and lowest in K1. Both retinoid and kelakai serum significantly reduced expression levels (p<0.05). The 4% kelakai serum (K5) produced greater reductions than the 2% dose, approaching the effect of retinoid serum. Conclusion: Kelakai leaf extract serum at 4% effectively decreases VEGF and IL-6 expression in UVB-exposed mice, supporting its potential as a natural anti-photoaging agent.
