Abstract

The immune system, comprising innate and adaptive components, is crucial for defending the human body against various infectious agents, including filarial parasites. Filariasis, caused by thread-like nematodes, poses a significant health risk in tropical and subtropical regions, affecting over 120 million people worldwide. Understanding the immune response to filarial infection is essential for developing effective treatments and preventive strategies. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, focusing on the human immune response to filarial infections, particularly the roles of the adaptive and innate immune systems. Systematic searches of databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were carried out, with search terms including "lymphatic filariasis," "immune response to filariasis," and others. The immune response to filarial infection involves complex interactions between the innate and adaptive immune systems. The skin and mucous membranes act as the first line of defense, while specific immune cells and cytokines play crucial roles in the inflammatory response and parasite elimination. The adaptive immune response, particularly the Th2 response, is critical for clearing microfilariae from the bloodstream. However, the immune system's ability to effectively deal with filarial infections varies due to factors such as genetic susceptibilities, infection severity, and environmental exposures.

Abstract

Parasitic infections, particularly those caused by hookworms, pose a significant challenge to global health, affecting millions in developing regions. Understanding the human immune response to such infections is crucial for developing effective interventions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the innate and adaptive immune responses mobilized against hookworms, emphasizing the roles of various immune cells and the interplay between different immune mechanisms. A systematic literature review was conducted, focusing on studies published from January 2010 to the present. Databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched using terms related to parasitic infections, immune responses, and hookworm pathology. Both experimental and review articles were included to extract detailed information on cellular and molecular immune responses to parasitic infections. The review highlights the dual role of innate and adaptive immunity in combating hookworm infections. Innate immunity acts as the first line of defense through mechanisms like inflammation and the production of antimicrobial peptides. Adaptive immunity provides a more targeted response, involving T and B cells and the production of specific antibodies. The interaction between these immune components and the modulation of immune responses, including the Th1/Th2 balance, are critical for the host's defense and the pathogenesis of hookworm infections. The intricate immune responses to hookworm infections underscore the complexity of host-parasite interactions. Understanding these responses is essential for developing novel therapeutic and preventive strategies against hookworm and other parasitic infections. Future research should focus on unraveling the detailed mechanisms of immunity and exploring the potential for vaccine development and immune-based therapies.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Skin is an important aspect of the human body. Many factors may influence skin health and its characteristics, including physiological and metabolic conditions such as obesity, blood sugar, hemoglobin and hematocrit, and uric acid. To establish a correlation between physiological and metabolic health parameters with skin-face analysis (roughness and wrinkles). This research was conducted in Kalam Kudus Foundation, West Jakarta, targeting individuals ≥17 years old, both men and women, following the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Skin health parameters used were roughness and wrinkles. The metabolic parameters studied were body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body composition, blood sugar, hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht), and uric acid. Our research shows negative coefficient results of BMI (-0,076 and –0,059), WC (-0,844 and -0,795), Hb (-0,069 and -0,074), Ht (-0,112 and -0,161), and uric acid (-0,155 and -0,170) with skin roughness and wrinkle. Other parameters such as HC (0,294 and 0,323), blood glucose (0,141 and 0,058), total body fat mass (0,321 and 0,345), visceral fat (0,234 and 0,203), total subcutaneous fat (0,319 and 0,391), and total muscle mass (0,725 and 0,890) result in a positive coefficient with skin roughness and wrinkle. An increase in BMI, WC, Hb, Ht, and uric acid is associated with better skin roughness and wrinkles while higher hip circumference, total body fat mass, visceral fat, total subcutaneous fat, total muscle mass, and blood sugar may worsen the skin condition. Keywords: Obesity, Blood Sugar, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, Uric Acid, Skin Roughness, Wrinkles

Abstract

Anemia is a multifaceted health condition characterized by a deficiency in the number or quality of red blood cells or hemoglobin concentration that can cause significant impairment to cognitive and physical growth. Physical development and social welfare of school-aged children are profoundly impacted by anemia. Several risk factors including nutritional deficiencies (with particular emphasis on iron, vitamins A, and B12), genetic susceptibility, inflammatory mechanisms, and parasitic infection. In Indonesia, anemia is prevalent among children aged 5 to 12 years at a rate of 23%. An alarming prevalence of malnutrition and cognitive decline in low-income regions can be attributed to parasitic infections. In Indonesia, worm infections are prevalent among elementary school pupils at a rate of 29.7%. This demonstrates the criticality of deworming programs in academic institutions. A balanced and healthy nutritional intake is paramount in order to prevent vitamin deficiency. Vitamin supplementation can be given in conditions where optimal intake is not sufficient. This community service was conducted at SDN 01 Ciherang District, Cianjur, West Java. The present activity employed the PDCA method to assess for iron deficiency anemia, and vitamin supplementation. This task entails conducting a physical assessment and completing a survey. Result of screening showed that 13 students had anemia (8.6%), 41 students (27.14%) did not take worm medicine, and 86 students (56.9%) did not take vitamins. Abstract

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a common problem among the elderly, affecting their quality of life. Identifying reliable biomarkers like Apolipoprotein A (Apo-A) could improve management strategies, as its anti-inflammatory properties may help predict the severity of FI. This study aims to assess Apo-A as a lipid biomarker for predicting the severity of fecal incontinence, using the Fecal Incontinence Severity Index (FISI) for measurement. This cross-sectional study involved 93 elderly participants at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home, who exhibited varying FI levels. The severity was evaluated using the FISI, while serum lipid profiles were analyzed to measure Apo-A levels. We assessed Apo-A’s predictive ability for FI severity through the area under the curve (AUC) from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The state variable was set at 0 on the FISI scale, indicating the absence of FI. The AUC for Apo-A was found to be 0.631, with a p-value of 0.031, indicating that higher Apo-A levels are significantly linked to the absence of fecal incontinence. Apo-A is a promising biomarker for predicting FI severity, although its predictive capacity is limited. Future studies should investigate combining Apo-A with other inflammatory markers to enhance prediction accuracy.

Abstract

Abstract

Visceral fat has a significant impact on metabolic health. Elevated visceral fat area could increase the risk of hyperuricemia, which may lead to further metabolic complications. The study aims to assess the relationship between uric acid levels and visceral fat accumulation and the subsequent effect on subcutaneous fat distribution in the trunk, arms, and legs among the elderly population. This study involved 61 elderly participants at Hana Nursing Home. Serum uric acid levels were measured using point-of-care testing (POCT). Body composition, including visceral and subcutaneous fat, was assessed using the Omron body composition monitor. Spearman correlation analysis evaluated the relationship between uric acid levels, visceral fat, and subcutaneous fat in different body regions, including the trunk, arms, and legs. This study has demonstrated a positive correlation between uric acid levels and visceral fat accumulation (r = 0.285, p = 0.026), subcutaneous fat in the trunk (r = 0.804, p < 0.001), arms (r = 0.752, p < 0.001), and legs (r = 0.827, p < 0.001), suggesting that having a high amount of visceral fat can be an indicator of having more subcutaneous fat as well.

Abstract

Cardio-renal syndrome reflects the intricate link between heart and kidney health, where the dysfunction of one organ worsens the other. In coronary heart disease, the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) is a key tool for estimating the 10-year risk of myocardial infarction (MI) or death. Abdominal obesity, often measured by waist-hip ratio (WHR), has emerged as an important cardiovascular risk factor, potentially enhancing existing predictive models. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between FRS for Hard Coronary Heart Disease and kidney function (Cardio-Renal Syndrome) and to assess WHR as a predictive parameter for FRS. This study conduct a cross-sectional study among 52 employees of Yayasan Kalam Kudus, it analyzed the correlation between FRS ("10-year risk of MI or death" and "Average 10-year risk of MI or death"), kidney function decline, waist circumference, and WHR using Spearman's correlation. Significant correlations were found between "10-year risk of MI or death" and kidney function decline (r: -0.381; p: 0.005), waist circumference (r: 0.274; p: 0.050), and WHR (r: 0.333; p: 0.016). Similarly, "Average 10-year risk" correlated with kidney function decline (r: -0.376; p: 0.006) and WHR (r: 0.291; p: 0.036). The study highlights a meaningful link between FRS, kidney function, and abdominal obesity. These findings support the inclusion of WHR and waist circumference in coronary risk assessments, particularly for populations at risk of cardio-renal syndrome.

Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent issue among elderly women, significantly impacting their quality of life. Handgrip strength, an indicator of overall muscle strength, is understudied in its role concerning UI. Utilizing handgrip strength to measure overall muscle strength, including pelvic floor muscles, introduces a novel approach to supporting continence maintenance in elderly women. The aim is to determine the correlation between handgrip strength and UI severity among elderly women, using the International Consultation on Incontinence – Short Form (ICIQ-SF) for measurement. This study involved 74 elderly female participants at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. Spearman’s correlation was employed to analyze the relationship between handgrip strength (in kilograms), measured with the Omron Handgrip Strength device on the right hand, and UI severity was assessed through the ICIQ-SF scoring questionnaire, with scores ranging from 0 to 21. Findings indicated a statistically significant negative correlation between handgrip strength and UI severity (r = -0.245, p = 0.035). This suggests that higher handgrip strength correlates with lower UI severity. The study found a significant correlation between handgrip strength and UI in elderly women, indicating that strength-building interventions may reduce UI severity.
