Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an integrated instructional framework combining Web-Based Edulab (WBE) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding in cell biology. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group structure. The study was conducted at a public senior high school in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. A total of 69 Grade XI students participated in the study, with 35 students assigned to the experimental group and 34 students assigned to the control group.. The experimental group received instruction through the integration of WBE and PBL, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through a conceptual understanding test administered as pre-test and post-test. Prior to hypothesis testing, assumption tests including normality and homogeneity were conducted. The data were then analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with pre-test scores as the covariate. The results revealed a statistically significant effect of the instructional intervention on students’ conceptual understanding (F(1,66) = 4.084, p = 0.047, ηp² = 0.058), indicating a moderate effect size. The experimental group achieved a higher adjusted mean score (M = 83.548) than the control group (M = 77.820), suggesting that the WBE–PBL framework effectively improved students’ conceptual understanding in cell biology. These findings demonstrate that integrating interactive digital learning environments with inquiry-based pedagogy can promote deeper cognitive engagement and facilitate meaningful knowledge construction. This study contributes to biology education by providing empirical evidence for the effectiveness of the WBE–PBL framework. Practically, biology teachers can integrate virtual laboratory simulations, interactive visualizations, and problem-based investigations into classroom instruction to support students’ exploration of abstract cellular concepts. Curriculum developers may also incorporate technology-enhanced inquiry activities into biology learning materials to strengthen conceptual understanding and promote 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of scientific argumentation skills among biology students using Toulmin’s Argument Pattern (TAP) framework. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method using essay questions designed to elicit key components of scientific argumentation. The participants consisted of 82 undergraduate students enrolled in a Genetics course during the even semester of the 2025 academic year. Data were collected through an essay test developed based on Genetics-related topics. Data analysis focused on the presence of TAP components and the classification of students’ levels of scientific argumentation. The results reveal that students’ scientific argumentation skills remain low, with 47.56% of students categorized at Level 1 and 30.5% at Level 2. Analysis of TAP component distribution indicates that 91.46% of students were able to state claims; however, these claims were predominantly unsupported by warrants or reasoning that meaningfully connected the evidence to the conclusions. The low levels of scientific argumentation observed reflect limitations in students’ critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills. Therefore, the implementation of instructional models such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning (PjBL), and TAP-guided formative assessment strategies is recommended to enhance students’ scientific argumentation abilities.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance partners’ skills in producing solid organic fertilizer using non-symbiotic microbial consortiums and shredding machines through a participatory-collaborative empowerment approach based on the ODSIMED stages. The program was implemented from August to December 2025 with KUB Surya Agrotani in Kediri Regency. Skill data were collected from 56 respondents using structured observation sheets administered at the beginning and end of the mentoring program, while service quality was evaluated through a Likert-scale questionnaire. Descriptive analysis revealed a significant improvement across 10 production skill indicators, with an average N-Gain in the high category (0.89). An important finding was that participants’ compliance with occupational health and safety standards during the mentoring process also increased substantially, with a high N-Gain score (0.84). This result is consistent with the service quality assessment, which indicated that the team of lecturers and students paid strong attention to occupational health and safety standards throughout program implementation. These findings demonstrate that the integration of biotechnology and appropriate technology within the ODSIMED framework effectively strengthens partners’ organic fertilizer production capacity in a measurable and sustainable manner, while maintaining strong attention to health and safety standards.

Abstract

Abstract. Hidayah H, Setiowati FK, Adinugraha F, Zubaidah S. 2025. Woody angiosperm diversity and indigenous conservation in Ghimbo Pomuan Sacred Forest, Kampar, Riau Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 6240-6251. Woody angiosperms are the dominant component of tropical forest biodiversity, with important ecological, cultural, and economic roles. However, their conservation remains challenging, particularly in sacred forests managed under customary systems that are underdocumented in scientific literature. The Ghimbo Pomuan Sacred Forest in Kampar, Riau Province, Indonesia, offers an opportunity to explore the biocultural relationships between people and woody plant species. This study aimed to document woody angiosperm diversity in the Ghimbo Pomuan Sacred Forest and examine indigenous conservation practices at the forest level. Field exploration combined vegetation sampling in 35 plots (20 x 20 m) and semi-structured interviews with indigenous elders. We recorded 30 woody angiosperm species from 18 families, with Myrtaceae and Dipterocarpaceae being the most dominant. Species diversity was moderate (H′ = 2.637-2.915), with 24 genera and several species holding global conservation concern, such as Rubroshorea uliginosa (Endangered), Rubroshorea balangeran (Vulnerable), and Madhuca ovata (Critically Endangered). Indigenous management practices include customary prohibitions, collective governance (sekepomuan), and sanctions for violating these rules. Particular species, such as Syzygium spp. and Gluta renghas, were protected for both ecological and spiritual reasons, supporting natural regeneration and forest succession. This study underscores the importance of incorporating indigenous knowledge into conservation policies and reaffirms the significance of sacred forests as vital refuges for biodiversity.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and map the highest levels of misconceptions regarding plant morphology among Grade 11 high school students in Surabaya. A descriptive survey involved 114 11th-grade students from nine high schools in Surabaya, selected through random sampling. Based on answer accuracy, reasoning accuracy, and confidence levels, students’ responses were classified into conceptual understanding, partial understanding, lack of conceptual understanding, and misconception categories. Data were collected using the Four-Tier Diagnostic Test on Plant Morphology (MorforTest), consisting of 10 items. The instrument was validated by four biology experts and obtained a validity score of 90% (highly valid) and Cronbach alpha reliability  score  of  0.75  (reliable). Data were analyzed descriptively using percentages. The findings indicated that students exhibited misconceptions in the low (55%), moderate (40%), and high (5%) categories. The highest misconception rates were found in the concepts of Asteraceae inflorescences (45%) and the lamina and stamens of Canna indica (44%), whereas the lowest misconception rate was observed for moss rhizoids (14%). Thus, MorforTest can be recommended as a diagnostic tool to help teachers design learning strategies that minimize misconceptions in plant morphology.
