Abstract

The initial algebraic concept typically introduced to students is the linear equation in one variable. One of the earliest difficulties students encounter with this concept is comprehending the significance of a variable. This study aims to investigate the epistemological obstacles faced by students in acquiring proficiency in linear equations in one variable. A qualitative phenomenological methodology was employed in this research. The participants consisted of 35 eighth-grade students enrolled in a junior high school who had previously studied linear equations in one variable. In the initial phase of the study, the researcher formulated two word problems. The utilization of word problems was intended to elucidate students’ thought processes in articulating their ideas or reasoning in written form. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with four selected students to corroborate the researcher’s interpretation of their written responses. The findings and discussion reveal that the conceptual deficiencies acquired during instruction contributed to the emergence of epistemological learning obstacles among students. This learning obstacle was identified through the solutions proposed by students, which were predominantly arithmetic rather than algebraic. Although the students acknowledged that the problem they were dealing with was related to the concept of linear equations in one variable, the majority still encountered difficulties in providing solutions in the form of a linear equation in one variable., particularly in the forms  and .

Abstract

The concept of area is fundamental to geometry and essential for applications in various fields, including physics, engineering, and data analysis. This study examines the gap between mathematicians’ views on area and its presentation in Indonesian and Japanese elementary textbooks, as well as its impact on student learning. Using the Anthropological Theory of Didactics and a qualitative phenomenological design, the analysis focuses on chapters discussing the area, applying a three-stage content analysis to identify conceptual components, formula presentations, shape variations, and task types. This analysis is supported by quantitative indicators, such as the task variation index and proportions of exploratory versus procedural tasks. The findings indicate that Japanese textbooks employ a more systematic and comprehensive didactic approach, offering a range of tasks, exploratory methods, and logical sequencing that promote independent learning. In contrast, Indonesian textbooks rely on repetitive, limited cut-and-paste methods, which may lead to a rigid understanding and learning obstacles. The study suggests the need for a critical evaluation of textbooks and more conceptually coherent learning designs, aligned with mathematical principles. It recommends task designs that integrate exploration and reasoning, consistent formula derivation, and broader variations of shapes to reduce learning barriers.

Abstract

The Mathematics Education Game is a gamification-based teaching material specifically designed to develop mathematical creative thinking skills and self-regulated learningin high school students. This game adopts a Snakes and Ladders format, consisting of three learning modules covering core trigonometry: basic concepts, quadrants, special angles, trigonometric equations, trigonometric identities, double-angle identities, sums and differences of angles, and multiplication of trigonometric functions. The game developed in this study, Attractive Trigonometric Snakes and Ladders (ULTRA), aims to serve as an engaging digital learning resource for students in grades XI and XII. The purpose of this study is to examine the improvement in creative thinking skills and self-regulated learning of students who use ULTRA. The research method uses the ADDIE model and is evaluated through three research instruments: (1) a mathematical creative thinking test containing four essay questions to measure fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration; (2) a 24-item self-regulated learning questionnaire that assesses goal setting, monitoring, strategy use, and reflection; and (3) a 15-item student response questionnaire to assess usability and engagement. Effectiveness was analyzed using normalized gain, while validity and practicality were reviewed through expert assessment and descriptive data. The research subjects were 496 students from 16 classes, comprising 247 in the experimental class and 249 in the control class. This study concluded that ULTRA is valid, practical, and has potential as a digital medium for mathematics learning. Abstract

Challenges in students’ numeracy skills remain a persistent issue in mathematics classrooms in Indonesia, particularly when teaching materials are not connected to students’ real-life contexts. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to develop a Student Worksheet designed based on the local environmental context of Jambi within the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) perspective on number topics to enhance students’ numeracy achievement. This study employs the Plomp development model, which consists of three phases: preliminary investigation, design and realization, and evaluation. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, interviews, and numeracy literacy tests. The results of expert assessments indicate that the developed product is highly feasible in terms of content, language, and design. Field testing conducted in Class VII A of SMP N 11 Kota Jambi showed that the average numeracy test score of 34 students reached 80.47, exceeding the Minimum Mastery Criterion (75). These findings indicate that the contextual-based Student Worksheet is effective in improving students’ numeracy and in strengthening their connection to local contexts as a means of fostering sustainability awareness.

Abstract

AbstractThe teke (gecko) and biklusu (lizard) motifs in lotis woven fabrics represent symbolic and spiritual values in Amanuban culture while also containing mathematical structures. However, these mathematical aspects are rarely explored, and local weaving traditions are seldom integrated into formal mathematics learning. This gap has led to limited use of cultural resources in supporting students’ understanding of geometry. Therefore, this study identifies the types of frieze patterns in three variants of these motifs and explores their potential for integration into mathematics education. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing direct observation, documentation, and interviews with weavers and cultural elders. The primary data consisted of visual representations of the three motifs, which were analyzed through isometric transformations including translation, vertical and horizontal reflection, 180° rotation, and glide reflection. The classification was based on the seven types of frieze patterns as defined by the one-dimensional isometry group theory. The findings reveal that two motifs correspond to the F6 frieze pattern type, while one aligns with the F7 type, demonstrating varying degrees of geometric symmetry complexity. The teke and biklusu motifs can serve as effective contextual tools for mathematics instruction across educational levels, from pattern recognition in primary school to advanced discussions of isometry group theory in higher education. This approach aligns with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum by linking mathematics learning to meaningful local contexts.
