Abstract

The flipped classroom is an instructional innovation that has been increasingly implemented in mathematics education. This model transforms traditional instruction by delivering learning materials outside the classroom through videos or reading resources, while class time is devoted to interactive activities such as discussion and problem solving. This mini-review aims to analyze the implementation of the flipped classroom in mathematics education, its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes, the challenges encountered, and strategies for effective implementation. The study adopts a mini-review approach with a systematic study selection process. Articles were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, covering publications from 2015 to 2024. Of the 134 articles identified, 27 studies were selected through title, abstract, and full-text screening. The findings indicate that flipped classroom implementation varies across educational levels. At the primary level, its effectiveness depends on scaffolding and adult support, whereas at the secondary and higher education levels, the flipped classroom enhances student engagement, conceptual understanding, and learning outcomes, despite challenges related to self-regulated learning readiness and unequal access to technology. Compared to traditional instruction, the flipped classroom emphasizes learner autonomy, in-class problem-solving activities, and the use of digital technologies, while requiring strong instructional design and institutional support to be effective.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and evaluate the effects of game-based mathematics learning. Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is used as a method in this research by collecting primary studies through checking the Google Scholar database, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) from 2013 to 2022 with the keywords "games and learning mathematics" or "games and mathematics education", resulting in 25 relevant primary studies with inclusion criteria. The analysis technique used for the articles or primary studies that have been collected is that each primary study is recorded, then classified by title and year of study. Furthermore, each of the articles included in this study was analyzed to obtain the findings and discussion required to draw conclusions from this SLR study. It shows several results from the 25 articles used as material for the analysis of game-based mathematics learning, namely: 1) There are two types of games that are applied in the process of learning mathematics, namely traditional games, and modern games. 2) In general, the influence of the application of games, both traditional and modern, on learning mathematics is to improve the quality of learning with better indicators of teacher skills and student activity. From the results of this analysis, it can be concluded that the application of games in the process of learning mathematics is effective, because it affects the quality of learning mathematics in schools, especially by increasing student competence. The findings of this study also contribute to providing information related to the trend of game-based mathematics learning in Indonesia, which is expected to become recommendations and ideas for further research.

Abstract

One of the psychological aspects of students that encourage students' mathematical representation ability is self-confidence. The mathematical representation ability of each student is not the same, because of the student's ability to receive and process the information that the teacher has given during the lesson. Thus, the cognitive style also affects the ability of mathematical representation. This article is a systematic literature review (SLR) of 25 studies published until November 2022 with the help of the Publish or Perish (PoP) application with the Google Scholar database. This article aims to investigate: (a) the characteristics of the period, index, research approach, subject matter, and demographics of the participants in the identified articles, (b) learning methods that can improve students' mathematical representation and self-confidence abilities, and (c) the most frequently used cognitive style type. The results of research with SLR show that the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model is effective and able to develop students' mathematical representation skills, and student self-confidence. Mathematical representation ability studies based on cognitive style mostly use Field Dependent (FD) and Field Independent (FI) types, and rarely use spatial and visualizer-verbalizer types. The results of this SLR can be useful for other researchers who are interested in researching this topic in the form of research gaps that can be done for the next research.

Abstract

Numerous studies have explored how the flipped classroom affects satisfaction, learning outcomes, and attitudes of both teachers and students. However, there is a gap in research regarding its impact on higher-order thinking. This meta-analysis aims to fill this gap by assessing the effect size of the flipped classroom model on students’ mathematical higher-order thinking. Data from 30 primary studies, including journal articles, proceedings, theses, and dissertations, were analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) Version 4 Software. These studies included 1,043 students in the experimental groups and 970 in the control groups. The analysis revealed a pooled effect size of 1.094, indicating a significant positive impact. Notably, the effect size remained consistent across various educational levels, sample sizes, years of study, types of learning media, and higher-order thinking indicators. This suggests the versatility and effectiveness of the flipped classroom model across different educational settings, including middle school, high school, and college, regardless of class size or learning media used.

Abstract

Berdasarkan pemetaan digit–arah bilah, disusun pula model konseptual steganografi: penyisipan pesan biner melalui variasi orientasi bilah tanpa mengubah karakter visual motif. Temuan ini menegaskan potensi motif anyaman sebagai media representasi informasi sekaligus konteks budaya untuk pembelajaran matematika diskret melalui tugas bertahap (pengodean motif, identifikasi unit ulang/periode, penurunan aturan modulo, dan konversi bilangan). Motif weaving on the anjung wall of the Rumah Bubungan Tinggi exhibits repeating patterns that can be modeled as binary sequences. This qualitative exploratory study encodes strip orientation as 1 and 0, then examines periodicity, formulates modulo-based rules, and performs binary–decimal–character conversions to connect traditional motifs with the basic structure of digital information encoding. The results show that the motifs form deterministic binary sequences with specific periods that can be described using modulo functions. Based on digit-to-orientation mapping, the study also proposes a conceptual motif-based steganography model: embedding binary messages through variations in strip orientation without altering the motif’s overall visual character. These findings highlight the potential of weaving motifs as both an information representation medium and a cultural context for discrete mathematics learning through stepwise tasks (motif encoding, identification of repeating units/periods, derivation of modulo rules, and number conversion).

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study provides a comprehensive profile of scientific academic writing skills among university students enrolled in mathematics education and primary school teacher education programs. Using a self-assessment survey, 110 students evaluated their proficiency across various dimensions of scientific writing, including clarity and coherence, organization of scientific arguments, use of scientific terminology, citation and referencing, critical evaluation of literature, and independent thinking. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement in students' writing skills. The findings revealed that students generally feel confident in their ability to construct clear academic paragraphs and use appropriate vocabulary and tone, but struggle with higher-order writing tasks such as synthesizing information from multiple sources and organizing extended scientific texts. Many students also expressed difficulties in applying proper citation and referencing styles, particularly APA format. Key strengths identified in the study include competence in basic grammar, punctuation, and paragraph structure, while notable weaknesses were found in areas such as critical evaluation, organizing complex arguments, and correct application of citation conventions. These results suggest a need for targeted instructional interventions to help students develop the advanced scientific writing skills necessary for academic success. The study's findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on improving scientific academic writing pedagogy, offering insights for educators to better support students in mastering these critical skills.

Abstract

The integration of technology in 21st-century education brings considerable advantages, particularly through "plugged" activities within problem-based learning (PBL) frameworks to enhance computational thinking (CT) skills. However, the impact of plugged activities in PBL on CT skills development has shown inconsistency. Additionally, how do plugged activities compare with unplugged activities within PBL for optimizing CT skills? This study addresses this question by comparing the effects of plugged and unplugged activities integrated into PBL on students' CT skills. A meta-analysis was conducted on 17 empirical studies published between 2011 and 2023, which produced 31 effect sizes in g units and included data from 1,376 students. Using the Q Cochrane and Z tests, facilitated by the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software, the data were analyzed to determine these effects. The findings showed that, descriptively, plugged activities in PBL (g = 0.818; p < 0.05) had a stronger effect on enhancing CT skills than unplugged activities (g = 0.649; p < 0.05). Statistically, sufficient evidence indicated that plugged activities within PBL are more effective than unplugged activities for improving students’ CT skills. Therefore, educators, including teachers and lecturers, may consider using plugged activities as part of a PBL framework to support the development of CT skills in students.
