Abstract

This research examines the historical development of the philosophy of education and science during the Greek and Islamic periods, two historical epochs that significantly influenced the evolution of thought and the conception of science. In classical Greek times, philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle contributed profound thoughts regarding education and science. The primary focus was on exploring the fundamental concepts of education, character formation, and the development of scientific thought. A shift in intellectual focus occurred during the Islamic Golden Age, where Greek knowledge was inherited and enriched by Muslim scholars such as Ibn Sina and Ibn Khaldun. Islamic thought played a crucial role in integrating philosophy, education, and science, with the application of scientific methods, rationality, and ethics as integral parts of the educational approach. This research employs a historical analysis method to trace the development of ideas and major contributions of figures in both periods. The results of the study highlight the evolution of education and science concepts from classical Greece to the Islamic era, indicating a transfer of intellectual ideas and values that laid the foundation for the development of modern science and education. It is hoped that a profound understanding of the history of the development of the philosophy of education and science in both periods can provide critical insights into the roots of thought and values that form the basis for contemporary science and education.

Abstract

The moral crisis among Indonesia’s young generation indicates that educational policies such as Strengthening Character Education (PPK) and the Independent Curriculum have not been fully effective in shaping students’ character. This condition underscores the urgency of reinforcing moral and spiritual values within the education system. This study aims to (1) describe the biography and educational thought of Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, (2) analyze the concept of character education in Ayyuha al-Walad, and (3) examine its relevance to character education in Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a library research approach and Krippendorff’s content analysis model, this study draws primary data from Ayyuha al-Walad and secondary data from al-Ghazali’s other works and supporting literature. The findings reveal that Ayyuha al-Walad encompasses key character values such as religiosity, honesty, perseverance, tolerance, independence, curiosity, appreciation of achievement, love of peace, responsibility, and social concern. These values are internalized through exemplary behavior, habituation, moral advice, and spiritual purification (tazkiyatun nafs). They align with Indonesia’s five pillars of national character education: religiosity, independence, mutual cooperation, integrity, and nationalism. Conceptually, al-Ghazali’s thought provides a philosophical and spiritual foundation for strengthening character education in Indonesia. The integration of moral and spiritual values into the curriculum can foster a generation that is intellectually capable, ethically grounded, and noble in character-consistent with the goals of national education.

Abstract

Kitab kuning learning constitutes the core foundation of the scholarly tradition in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). However, academic studies remain limited in explaining how classical Islamic pedagogy is adaptively implemented within contemporary educational contexts. This study addresses this gap by examining the actual practices of kitab kuning learning in a traditional pesantren. The study aims to analyze the planning and implementation of Islamic educational methods in kitab kuning instruction at NU Al-Qomariyah Islamic Boarding School, Galang. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with pesantren leaders, teachers, and students, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, with trustworthiness ensured through triangulation and the criteria proposed by Lincoln and Guba. The findings indicate that kitab kuning learning is systematically planned based on students’ needs analysis, implemented through staged instructional methods (bandongan, sorogan, musyawarah, and bahtsul masāil), adapted to the epistemological characteristics of the texts, and reinforced through contextualized formal lesson planning (RPP). These findings demonstrate that pesantren pedagogy is adaptive, reflective, and oriented toward developing students’ competencies. This study contributes conceptually by showing that pesantren possess internal capacities to continuously reconstruct kitab kuning pedagogy without losing their scholarly identity.

Abstract

Abstract

General Background: Islamic Religious Education learning faces challenges in responding to digital-era demands and shifting student expectations toward more participatory and contextual learning processes. Specific Background: In private Madrasah Tsanawiyah across Deli Serdang Regency, learning practices show variability in pedagogical approaches, assessment, and institutional support. Knowledge Gap: Existing studies have not sufficiently explained how learning transformation occurs across different institutional contexts nor produced an integrative conceptual model based on multi-site analysis. Aims: This study aims to analyze actual learning conditions, identify forms of transformation, examine supporting and inhibiting factors, and formulate a cross-site conceptual model of learning transformation. Results: Findings indicate that transformation occurs gradually through revisions of instructional documents, a shift from teacher-centered to student-centered learning, implementation of formative assessment, and continuous reflection and feedback practices. The process is influenced by teacher pedagogical competence, digital literacy, leadership, collaborative culture, and infrastructure limitations, alongside administrative burdens and bureaucratic constraints. Novelty: The study proposes an integrative conceptual model positioning learning transformation as a dynamic cycle involving policy implementation, pedagogical practice, reflection, evaluation, and feedback across institutional systems. Implications: Sustainable transformation depends on reconstructing teachers’ professional paradigms and strengthening institutional support systems rather than relying solely on administrative adjustments.

Abstract

This paper will elaborate on the use of Ibn Sina’s (Avicenna) metaphysics perspective in helping Politeknik Negeri Media Kreatif Medan students to understand Islamic theology and Islamic education axiology. The qualitative (library research) method will further analyze and dissect Avicenna’s metaphysics concept’s relevance to Islamic education. The writer argues that every idea or science that impacts society would have its methodology and objective to ensure its promulgation throughout the years. To achieve an apprehensible understanding, the writer will aim to explain basic knowledge of the idea of “being” and “intellect’’. Furthermore, Avicenna’s “being” and “active intellect” notion has been famous among philosophers and linked to many philosophical and mystical discussions. Therefore, it can be utilized as an essential foundation in understanding Islamic education. His metaphysics concept can explain complex exposition, as religious knowledge has been socially constructed for centuries. Scrutinizing constructed knowledge would require a concept that has the methodology to illustrate the possibilities of higher thinking—making Avicenna’s metaphysics a suitable concept to give profound comprehensive religious study for the student.

Abstract

General Background: Epistemology, as a core branch of philosophy, critically examines the nature, sources, and limits of knowledge. Specific Background: Within the Islamic intellectual tradition, epistemology encompasses distinct methodologies—tajribi, burhani, bayani, and ‘irfani—each rooted in different epistemic frameworks. Knowledge Gap: However, comprehensive analyses of how these methods are implemented within the context of Islamic education philosophy remain limited. Aims: This study aims to explore the application of Islamic epistemological methods in the study of Islamic educational philosophy. Results: Through qualitative descriptive library research, the study finds that the tajribi (empirical) method is utilized to understand physical realities, the burhani (rational) method to grasp metaphysical concepts, the bayani (textual-interpretative) method to extract meaning from sacred texts, and the ‘irfani (intuitive-spiritual) method to attain inner truths through spiritual practice. Novelty: The study synthesizes these diverse epistemological approaches and delineates their respective educational domains, offering an integrated framework for understanding Islamic knowledge acquisition. Implications: These findings contribute to the broader discourse on Islamic education by highlighting the multidimensional nature of knowledge in Islamic thought and advocating for a balanced pedagogical model that accommodates empirical, rational, textual, and spiritual dimensions. Highlights: Distinct epistemological methods reflect diverse paths to knowledge in Islam. Each method aligns with specific objects: material, rational, textual, or spiritual. Integration of these methods enriches Islamic educational philosophy. Keywords: Islamic Epistemology, Tajribi, Burhani, Bayani, ‘Irfani
