Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of creative thinking skills and the distribution of its aspects based on gender and material. The study is motivated by the critical role of creative thinking in addressing the global challenges of the 21st century, particularly in relation to alternative energy as a sustainable solution. The research employs a quantitative descriptive method. Creative thinking in this study is conceptualized based on Torrance’s framework, which includes four main aspects: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The study involved 72 Grade X students from Sumedang Regency, who completed an essay test consisting of six questions covering Work, Energy, and Alternative Energy (WE-ALT) topics. The test instrument, adopted from previous research, was empirically validated and confirmed to be reliable based on item statistics, including misfit order and reliability analysis results, ensuring its suitability for this study. Data were processed and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and the Rasch Model with Winstep version 4.7.0.0 to map students' abilities. The results show that students scored highest on the Work material, with an average score of 64, followed by the Energy material with a moderate score of 58, and the lowest score on Alternative Energy material with 36. Overall, Alternative Energy was the topic with the lowest average score for creative thinking skills, and female students outperformed male students, particularly in the fluency aspect. These findings suggest that innovative, technology-integrated, and interactive learning strategies are needed to enhance students' creative thinking skills.

Abstract

Misconceptions in physics education continue to pose significant challenges to meaningful learning among college students. This study aims to analyze the types, causes, and remediation strategies of physics misconceptions at the tertiary level through a systematic literature review. A total of 50 peer-reviewed articles published between 2019 and 2023 were selected from the Scopus database using bibliometric analysis tools, including Harzing's Publish or Perish and VosViewer. The review reveals five main types of student misconceptions: prejudice-based, non-scientific theories, conceptual misconceptions, vernacular misunderstandings, and factual errors. The most common causes include students' prior knowledge and ineffective instructional methods. The four-tier diagnostic test is found to be the most frequently used and effective tool in identifying misconceptions. Remediation strategies include conceptual change texts, simulation-based experiments, e-learning, and collaborative learning models. The study concludes that understanding and addressing misconceptions require both accurate diagnostic tools and innovative teaching strategies. This review contributes to physics education research by providing a comprehensive overview of misconception diagnostics and remediation approaches over the past five years.

Abstract

High school students have studied the characteristics of mechanical waves, including definitions, types, physical quantities, and properties of waves. However, many students still hold misconceptions about these concepts. This study aims to describe the validity and reliability of the Four-Tier Mechanical Wave Characteristics (FTMWC) diagnostic test instrument, developed to identify misconceptions among high school students regarding mechanical wave characteristics. The FTMWC was created through development research using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The study involved 112 grade XI high school students who had already studied mechanical waves and were selected using purposive sampling. The instrument was analyzed using the Rasch Model with Winsteps software version 3.73. The validity of the FTMWC instrument was confirmed based on item dimensionality. The construct validity yielded a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.61, indicating that the instrument sufficiently explains the interaction between participants and items. The item reliability was found to be 0.95, categorized as "very high." Conceptual analysis using Wright maps and Guttman scalograms revealed that the most common misconception was related to constructive interference in the sub-concept of wave properties. In conclusion, the FTMWC instrument is valid and reliable for assessing students' conceptions and identifying misconceptions about mechanical wave characteristics.

Abstract

Learning media is one of the important things of learning tools that can increase students' interest in learning. This study aims to develop KALIKA (Five Character Cards) learning media on the classification of living things using the Educational Design Research (EDR) method to enhance student achievement. The development model refers to ADDIE with a design thinking framework. The research was carried out at one of the Junior High School in Bandung City, during the even semester of 2023/2024, with a focus on students in class VII, totaling 21 participants. Convenient sampling was utilized for subject selection. The data collection techniques in this research data are validation sheet, assessment formative (pretest and posttest), and questionnaire user response. The validation sheet and user response questionnaire were processed into percentage data using Microsoft Excel, while the formative test results were processed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test statistical test and N-gain using SPSS. The results of this study showed that the validation test data obtained a validity percentage of 92.4% which categorized as very valid criteria, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test results state p <0.05 which means there is a significant difference between the pretest and post-test, and the results of the effectiveness test with N-gain effectiveness results of 0.31 which means the effectiveness of student learning is in the moderate category, and 95% students give positive response to KALIKA as learning media. This shows that using KALIKA learning media is quite effective as a support to improve student learning outcomes on the classification of living things. Previous researchers have never developed card-learning media using ADDIE with a design thinking framework, which contains five characters of 5 kingdoms of living things.

Abstract

The ability to think critically and solve complex problems requires a deep understanding of physics concepts. This study employed a novel method to conduct a multidimensional analysis of students' conceptual understanding of Newton's Laws using conceptual tests designed to assess indicators of interpretation, exemplification, inference, comparison, explanation, and integration. This study addresses conceptual understanding as a whole and in a controlled manner, and the action learning approach can support it. The sample in this study consisted of 25 students of class XII 1 at a high school in Kupang City, NTT. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach. The results showed that the average understanding score of students as a whole was in the “very low” category, namely 28.4%. Two main weaknesses were also found in students: (1) students showed a better understanding of Newton’s First Law compared to the Second Law (29.6%) and the Third Law (22.4%) which were more applicable, and (2) “Comparing” was the lowest indicator (21%). Meanwhile, based on gender, it showed that female students excelled in the “inferencing” indicator, while male students excelled in the “exemplifying” indicator. The results of this study indicate that learning methods that are mostly focused on lectures and abstract physics concepts can hinder conceptual understanding, as well as analytical and comparative skills. Therefore, this study recommends the implementation of an experiment-based learning approach to improve students' practical experience and conceptual understanding, as well as relate it to analytical indicators and Newton's Second and Third Laws.
