Abstract

This study aims to investigate how governance influences the Human Development Index (HDI) in eight developing Muslim-majority countries, collectively known as the D-8, by integrating an Islamic economic perspective. While existing literature recognizes governance as a key driver of HDI, few studies explore how Islamic economic values interact with governance mechanisms to shape human development outcomes. This research addresses this gap by examining the relationships among governance indicators, Islamic financial development, and HDI performance. Utilizing panel data from D-8 countries covering the period from 2013 to 2023, we employ the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) approach to analyze the interactions between governance quality, Islamic financial development, and human development. Governance is assessed through indicators such as government effectiveness, regulatory quality, and control of corruption, while Islamic financial development is measured by the growth and outreach of Shariah-compliant financial institutions. Our findings reveal three key insights: (1) Governance exerts a synergistic effect that enhances HDI in D-8 countries. (2) The impact of individual governance indicators varies, with government effectiveness and regulatory quality consistently associated with higher HDI. (3) Islamic financial development positively influences HDI, particularly in health and social welfare sectors, underscoring the role of Islamic values in promoting human well-being. This study contributes to the economic development literature by demonstrating how Islamic economic principles can support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within a robust governance framework. For policymakers, the findings highlight the importance of aligning Islamic welfare principles with governance reforms to optimize human development outcomes in developing Muslim-majority countries.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of entrepreneurial values within the educational practices of traditional pesantren in Aceh, Indonesia. While entrepreneurship is not formally taught, pesantren foster entrepreneurial competencies through religious devotion, moral education, and communal life. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that pesantren cultivate dual dimensions of edupreneurship: batiniyah values such as sincerity, perseverance, and reliance on God, and lahiriyah practices, including community leadership, social responsibility, and trust-building. These values emerge organically from daily religious practices and form a moral foundation for entrepreneurial engagement. Despite challenges such as the absence of formal entrepreneurial curricula and limited critical thinking development, pesantren demonstrates a sustainable model of faith-based entrepreneurship that balances religious commitment with economic agency. This study contributes to global discussions on Islamic education and value-based entrepreneurship, offering a context-specific paradigm for integrating ethical economic empowerment into religious education systems. The Acehnese pesantren experience provides a valuable alternative to secular models, emphasizing indigenous educational traditions’ potential to drive spiritual and socioeconomic transformation.

Abstract

In Islam, sexual intercourse within marriage is regulated as an act of worship. It is not merely viewed as a biological activity but as a means of fulfilling human nature's innate needs. According to hadith, couples are encouraged to recite specific prayers derived from prophetic traditions. Among the Buginese Muslims, however, the practice of sexual preparation has been transformed into a cultural tradition, adapting Islamic teachings through their indigenous Lontara script in a text known as Assikalaibineng, which incorporates Qur’anic verses. This study aims to analyze the Qur’anic invocations in the manuscript by, first, examining and analyzing its philological aspects and, second, employing reception theory to scrutinize the transmission and transformation of Qur’anic practices. The primary data consists of three manuscripts preserved by Muhlis Hadrawi. The findings reveal that the Buginese hermeneutical engagement with the Qur’an in the manuscript involves several adaptations: phonological negotiation of Qur’anic verses to align with regional linguistic patterns, metaphorical interpretations of verses (such as the kun fayakun invocation), symbolic use of Qur’anic letters (e.g., alif and ba), and semantic shifts that assign context-specific meanings to the text. The transmission of the ideas in the manuscript has evolved from an elite, exclusive practice to a more widely communal one, blending mystical elements with cognitive psychology. The Buginese believe that performing the Assikalaibineng ritual can confer religious merit through marital relations, as well as honor one’s spouse, thereby unifying the heart, soul, body, and mind. This study further demonstrates how the integration of religious and cultural elements in this practice has shaped a distinctive feature of Buginese identity. Additionally, it underscores a nuanced understanding of diverse cultural expressions within Islamic traditions.
