Abstract

Weed is one of the important constraints in rice production, and therefore its effective control measure should be considered that the production can be optimized. The application of no tillage by using herbicide is assumed more effective and efficient than conventional one. However, herbicide which is used as contionusly can influence residue in soil, plant and rice. The objectives of the research were to analyze the effect of no tillage and its combination of IPA glyphosate herbicide concentration levels to rice productivity and to analyze IPA glyphosate herbicide residue in soil, straw and rice. The study was conducted in the field by using IPA glyphosate herbicide with five treatments, namely maximum tillage (Gm), no herbicide spraying (G0), glyphosate herbicide doses 1.5 l ha-1(G1), 3 l ha-1 (G2) and 4.5 l ha-1(G3). The analysis of glyphosate residue was done in soil, straw and rice samples by using HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) method. The research results showed that Gm and G1 treatments had highest with rice yield average were 938 g m-2 and 728 g m-2, respectively. Gm treatmen more profitable with R / C ratio of 1.84 with a profit of Rp 13.714 million, but using more labor than G1 treatment. Thereby, no-tillage treatment (G1) could be done by using glyphosate herbicide in doses 1.5 l ha-1, economically. Glyphosate contained in soil samples, straw, and rice proved that using of gyphosate intensively could have negative impacts on soil microbial activity, plant resistance to plant diseases and residue of glyphosate carried by plants. Glyphosate residue concentration was highest found on rice sample in treatments G3 was 0.272 mg kg-1. These glyphosate residual values on rice was highest than maximum residue limit which was decided by Indonesia government (0.1 mg kg-1). Glyphosate residues contained in food is not within safe limits if taken every day and can cause adverse effects to human health. Keywords: glyphosate herbicide, maximum residue limits, paddy field, weed control

Abstract

Indonesia is rich with volcanic tuff-derived Andisols that contain variable charged minerals. This research was aimed at to extract nanoclays (diameter <200 nm) from volcanic tuffs, and to evaluate their potential as natural adsorbent of phosphate as contaminant in waters. Volcanic tuffs were taken from the 3rd (tv3) and 4th(tv4) layers of an Andisol profile at the foot slope of Salak Mountain Indonesia using dispersion-ultrasonication-centrifugation-dialysis separation procedure. By dispersing the materials in an acid condition (pH 4.0) followed with ultrasonication, it could be separated positively-charged nanoclays (nc3 and nc4) from the negative ones. The separated nanoclays were then purified using centrifugation and membrane dialysis techniques. Potential of the extracted nanoclays as natural phosphate adsorbent was evaluated by characterizing their adsorption maxima (b values) according to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. It could be extracted 2.82 mg nc3/g tv3 and 4.29 mg nc4/g tv4. The b values of nc3 at 12, 24, and 48 hours equilibration time (76.48, 92.10, and 117.54 mg P/g nc3) were higher than those of nc4 (50.17, 59.52, and 71.99 mg P/g nc4). The most effective equilibration-time was 48 hours. The extracted nanoclays were considered prospective as natural adsorbent for removal phosphate contaminant in waters

Abstract

Soil Nutrient are dynamics. Their amount and movement within soil solution can determine its fertility to accomodate plant growth. The dissolved nutrients are moving together in the form of cations and anions. This study aims to determine the amount of dissolved cation-anion in the soil solution and to evaluate its relationship. Field trial was conducted at tropical rainforest of Bukit Duabelas National Park. The Lisymeter was installed on each Typic Hapludult soil horizon to accommodate percolated water. The leached water sample was extracted and each cation (NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+) and anion (PO43-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-) concentration were measured. Data were analyzed using independent-t stastical test, Spearman correlation, and stepwise linear regression. The results show that the total amount of cation and anion are significantly higher in the AO horizon than the AB and B horizons. The correlation analysis results show that each cation has a strong correlation to each anion (correlation value > 0.80) except PO43- ( ~ 0.70). Stepwise linear regression model shows that NH4+ has the strongest relation to NO3-, PO43-, and Cl- with R2 adj.= 0.75, Ca2+ to NO3-, PO43-, and SO42- (R2 adj.= 0.856), Mg2+ to NO3- and  PO43- (R2 adj.= 0.815), and K+ to PO43- and Cl-  (R2 adj.= 0.845). It can be concluded that NO3-, Cl-, SO42-, and PO43- are directly involved as cation co-pairing agents in the soil nutrient movement and leaching process.

Abstract

Peat nutrient dynamics research was intended to study the characteristics and distribution of macro nutrients in peat water and peat in secondary forests, shrubs and oil palm plantations. This research was conducted with purposive sampling method. Observations on oil palm plantations were carried out at three ages of oil palm (5, 12, and 16 years). Secondary forest and shrub peatlands were used as a comparison. Sampling of peat water and peat was carried out during the rainy and dry season, at four distances from the collection drain (25, 50, 75, and 150 m). The results showed that nutrient levels in peat water during the dry season were greater than the wet season. The status of peat water and peat nutrients in secondary forests and shrubs is relatively the same as that of oil palm plantations that were fertilized. Seasonal, land use and distance from the collection channel differences did not have a major influence on the distribution and characteristics of macro nutrients on peat. The macro nutrients content of peat water and peat, however, showed an increase with the distance from the collection channel.
