Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTAn area of 5,000 hectares in the Bram Itam River peatland protected forest had been converted into agricultural land and plantations dominated by oil palm, pinang and liberica coffee plantations. This land conversion has led to destruction of its function as a protected forest, thus recovery action must be performed. The study aimed to establish a pattern of vegetation rehabilitation on peatlands with damaged protected functions by prioritizing native peatland species and considering land suitability, environmental aspect, and socio-economic conditions. The aspects that were analyzed including the socio-economic conditions of the community, the status and function of the area, the consequences of rehabilitation activities, the characteristics of peatland, and the type of preference for rehabilitation. Data was collected through a survey method of forest farmer groups that manage the land area around Sungai Bram Itam protected area. The results indicated that community around the study area are in need of farm lands. Its status as protected forest with various land characteristics requires management zoning to facilitate the community's need for land. Social forestry program with a partnership scheme can be applied to areas adjacent to community land with peat depth less than 2 m. The planting method that should be applied is mixed cropping pattern of native species and plantation crops, which considers the protection function. Area with peat depth more than 2 m should be managed by KPHL Sungai Bram Itam to maintain and improve the protection function by planting native peatland species.Key words: Peatland conversion, palm oil, areca nut, liberica coffee, revegetation ABSTRAKSeluas 5.000 hektare areal hutan lindung gambut Sungai Bram Itam telah mengalami alih fungsi menjadi lahan pertanian dan perkebunan yang didominasi oleh perkebunan sawit, pinang, dan kopi liberika. Abstract

Currently, the Jakarta water is suffering from a high level of pollution, both the groundwater or the river. This is mainly caused by domestic wastewater disposal that has not been properly controlled. Efforts to develop domestic wastewater management are inadequate. Infrastructure development is very slow, the community participation and care, the wastewater management competencies and capacities are all very low. For this reason, it is necessary to increase the role of domestic wastewater management operators and regulators, to accelerate the construction of domestic wastewater treatment infrastructure, improve the participation and care of the community, and to improve the competence and capacity of domestic wastewater management service managers. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of the operators and regulators in the development of domestic wastewater management in DKI Jakarta. To achieve this goal, this study was conducted using the method of interpretive structural modeling (ISM) as a method for analyzing the interrelationships between institutions in the framework of developing domestic wastewater management. The result of this study shows that the key institutions that could accelerate the wastewater infrastructure development are the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, National Development Planning Agency, and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. The key institutions in enhancing the participation and care of the community are the Water Resources Office, the Environmental Office and the regional owned company Managing DKI Jakarta Waste Water. The key institutions related to improving the competence and capacity of domestic wastewater service managers are the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.

Abstract

The support of the local government and all social levels in the community is the key to successful waste management systems. Waste is mainly produced by community households. Deficient treatment and disposal severely pollute the environment. Therefore, the community must have an active role in protecting the environment. Regulation is an important aspect of policies and programs for the implementation of the waste management system to ensure that lower regulation is in line with the higher policies made by the central government. The objective of the study was to review regional regulation on waste management, comparing them to the central regulation government of waste policy, and analyze the implementation of the waste management system in the region. Content analysis was used to analyze the waste management of regional government policy. The implementation of waste management systems was analyzed using primary data obtained through observation. The secondary data was obtained by classifying the waste generation in tabular data calculated from the average of waste production by household per capita to the number of the population each subdistrict. The result indicated that the Regulation of Tapin District No. 6 of 2015 on the waste management system is in line with the central government waste policy. The implementation of waste management systems had not been carried out effectively by the regional government. The district generated solid waste at 93.3 tons each day and can only manage 27.21% in 4 subdistricts of urban settlement areas. The solid waste generation can be classified into five classes. Most are in the low and very low waste generation class. The very high generation class was in subdistricts, which have the highest population density in the region.

Abstract

Capillary water in peatlands has a very important role in supplying water to the root zone of plants. The current water content in the root zone depends mainly on groundwater levels in some areas with shallow water levels. The study aimed to measure the capillary water dynamics in peat soils at various soil densities and groundwater levels which were observed from the changes in peat color, moisture distribution, water content and hydrophobicity of peat soil. The study was conducted in the greenhouse of Indonesian Swampland Agricultural Research Institute, Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was the bulk density (BD) of peat, namely BD-1 (on actual condition, 0.1 g cm-3) and BD-2 (compressed into 0.2 g cm-3). The second factor was simulated groundwater levels (GWL) consisting of GWL-1 (-100 cm), GWL-2 (-70 cm) and GWL-3 (-40 cm) from soil surfaces. The results showed that the rise of capillary water in peat soil reached a maximum height of 50 cm which was characterized by the increase in water content at the top layer in the range of 105–127% for BD-1 and 141–181% for BD-2. The highest value of water content (308%) was achieved in the treatment of GWL-3 with BD-2 and the lowest (37%) was in the treatment of GWL-1 with BD-1. The rate of capillary water rose progressively corresponded to the increase in BD value because the number of micropores of BD-2 was greater.

Abstract

The growth of cacao in acid soils is commonly limited by some problems such as low available P and pH, and high Al saturation. Therefore, research is needed to solve the problem of coffee cultivation in acid soil. This study aimed to determine the effect of ameliorant, phosphate solubilizing microbes (PSM), and phosphate fertilizers (P) on the growth and nutrient uptake of cacao seedlings, and some acid soil properties. The study used a randomized block design with 3 factors and 3 replications. The first factor was ameliorant applications (without ameliorant, 10% organic fertilizer, 4% rice husk biochar, 4% rice husk biochar + 10% organic fertilizer). The second factor was PSM applications: without PSM, Burkholderia ambifaria (BPF) inoculants, and Aspergillus niger (FPF) inoculants. The third factor was P fertilizers applications (without Phosphate Rock (PR), 100, 200, and 400 mg P/kg of PR, and 400 mg P/kg of SP-36). The results showed that the applications of 4% rice husk biochar + 10% organic fertilizer + BPF or FPF inoculants increase the number of leaves by 77.9% and 69.2%, respectively, and increase the dry weight of shoot by 93.6 % and 101.9%, respectively. Phosphate rock application in media without organic fertilizer increases dry weight of shoots and roots of cacao seedlings, and the uptake of P, Ca, and Mg in shoots linearly in line with the increase of PR dose to 400 mg P/kg. Application of rice husk biochar significantly increased the acid phosphatase activity of growing media. Meanwhile, organic fertilizer increased the soil pH, acid phosphatase and available P activity, and decreased Al-dd growing media.

Abstract

Abstract

The amount of CO2 gas emissions in drained peatland for oil palm cultivation has been widely reported. However, the research addressing the contribution of litter respiration to peat and total respiration and its relationship with several environmental factors is found rare. The aim of this study was to measure peat and heterogeneous litter respiration of drained tropical peat in one year at a distance of 2.25 m and 4.50 m from mature oil palm trees of 14 years using the chamber method (Licor Li-830). In addition to CO2 efflux, we measured other environmental parameters, including peat temperature (10 cm depth), air temperature, groundwater table (GWL), and rainfall. Results showed that the mean total peat respiration (Rt) was 12.06 g CO2 m-2day-1, which consisted of 68% (8.24 g CO2 m-2day-1) peat (Rp) and root (Rr) respiration and 32% (3.84 g CO2  m-2day-1) of litter respiration (Rl) at the distance of 2.25 m from the palm tree. Meanwhile, at a farther distance, the Rt was 12.49 g CO2m-2day-1, the contribution of Rp was 56% (6.78 g CO2 m-2day-1), and Rl was higher than the closest distance (46%; 5.71 g CO2 m-2day-1). Thus, one-year observation resulting the mean Rt and Rr was 0.07–0.08 Mg CO2 ha-1 day-1, while Rl was 0.04–0.06 Mg CO2 ha-1 day-1. The means of Rt, Rp, and Rl were significantly different in the dry season than those recorded in the rainy season. The climatic-related variable such as peat and air temperature were chiefly governing respiration in peat under mature oil palm plantation, whereas the importance of other variables present at particular conditions. This paper provides valuable information concerning respiration in peat, especially for litter contribution and its relationship with environmental factors in peatland, contributing to global CO2 emission.

Abstract

Extensive utilization of fragile tropical peatlands ecosystem encourages a better understanding of spatiotemporal micronutrients distribution. The distribution of total Fe, Cu, and Zn in peat and their relationship with environmental factors were studied under oil palm plantation, Pangkalan Pisang, Koto Gasib, Riau, Indonesia. Peat samples were taken compositely inside the block using a combination of six factors, including a) the oil palm age (<6, 6-15, >15 years old), b) the peat thickness (< 3 and >3 m), c) season (rainy and dry), d) the distances from the secondary canal (10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150 m), e) the distances from an oil palm tree (1, 2, 3, and 4 m), and f) the depth of sample collection (0-20, 20-40, and 40-70 cm from the peat surface). Total Fe, Cu, and Zn were determined by the wet digestion method. These micronutrients observed in this study possessed high variability; however, they were within the expected range in tropical peatland. The entire micronutrients were statistically different by oil palm age, peat thickness, and distance from canal. Meanwhile, total Cu and Zn were also significantly different at each season. The oil palm age, peat thickness, and distance from the canal were the common factors controlling total Fe, Cu, and Zn in peat significantly. Moreover, total Cu and Zn were also dictated by season, distance from the oil palm tree, and depth of sample collection. Based on visual interpretation in PCA (principal component analysis), all micronutrients were categorized into two groups, separated by 2 m distance from the oil palm tree and 20 cm depth from the soil surface. Our study also highlights the dominance of the dilution over the enrichment process in peat, which requires further research to formulate micronutrients fertilization, especially for an extended cultivation time.

Abstract

The use of phosphorus and potassium-solubilizing microbes as biofertilizers is an alternative method to increase the availability of phosphorus and potassium in soils. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)-solubilizing multifunctional microbes (Aspergillus costaricaensis and Staphylococcus pasteuri mutants) on maize growth. The stages of this study consisted of viability test of P and K solubilizing A. costaricaensis and S. pasteuri mutants in peat and effectiveness test of P and K solubilizing A. costaricaensis and S. pasteuri mutants on maize growth. The results showed that peat carriers could keep the fungi population stable until 18 weeks of storage times. While the bacteria at 6 and 8 weeks storage times showed a slight decrease and stable in the 10 to 12 weeks storage time. The addition of P and K-solubilizing multifunctional microbes could reduce the use of fertilizer up to 50% in the treatment with a combination of easily soluble P or K sources with not-easily soluble P or K sources, as well as a combination of treatments of not-easily soluble P and K sources. This tended to occur in the treatment with the addition of A. costaricaensis mutant.
