Abstract

Compound fertilizer which combining organic-inorganic materials need to be developed to improve the effectivness of fertilizers in the soil. Filter cake as a material has highly potential to be used as a filler in physical process granulation of compound fertilizer. In this study, the particle size distribution and granule crushing strength properties were tested using 15-15-15 + 5S fertilizer compound formula, which are varied in the filler composition and K sources. Potassium sources consisted of 2 (two) types of fertilizers i.e KCl and K2SO4. Filler composition as a binder in fertilizer granulation consists of 5 combination filter cake and clay ratios (60:40, 70:30, 80:20, 90:10 and 100:0). Granulation carried out by the granulation method using pan granulator of 2 kg/batch capacity, 23 rpm rotation speed and 50o pan slope. The results of the research showed that statistically the combination of filter cake and clay 70:30 had a size distribution and hardness of granules not significantly different from standard fertilizer (100% clay). Keywords: crushing strength; filler; filter cake; granulation; size distribution

Abstract

Agricultural land expansion necessity for food security in Indonesia has been faced by the fact in utilizing marginal land such as shallow peat soil in Central Kalimantan. Among problems encountered in such marginal land are pests and diseases incidence. Farmers practice in dealing with those problems is the chemical pesticides application. Unintended chemical pesticides that fall on/into the soil might have an adverse effect to soil microbes activity. This research aimed to assess the effect of pesticides on functional soil microbes population in peat soil. The research used completely randomized factorial design with two factors. First factor was 7 combinations of types (paraquat and buthylphenylmethyl carbamat (BPMC)) and dosages (50, 100, and 200% of recommended dosage) of pesticides. Second factor was 4 incubation times (1, 7, 14, and 28 days). Following the each of incubation times, the soil samples treated and analyzed for population of phosphate solubilizing microbes, cellulolytic microbes, and N2 fixing bacteria. The results show that phosphate solubilizing fungi population decrease by pesticides treatment. In contrast, pesticides significantly increased the Azospirillum population. Adverse effect to microbes population was found on the first day of incubation, however it recovered at 7 days and longer incubation times. In general, functional microbes population with paraquat application lower than BPMC application.

Abstract

Along with the development of Batu City as a tourist city, it is feared that there will be an increase in land use conversion from apple orchards and other agricultural land into residential and tourism land. The rate of land use change must be controlled to maintain environment sustainability. One of the effort is studying the change that occurred in the past few years. The purpose of this study were to observe land use change pattern that occured in 2006, 2012, and 2018, and to predict the land use at 2030 in Batu City. Land use prediction was evaluated with Markov – Cellular Automata models. The analysis showed that forest area decreased up to 5% and the built area increased up to 5.2% from 2006 to 2018. Prediction of land use in 2030 showed that there will be a decrease in forest, agriculture, and bareland areas, and an increase in shrubs and built areas. Agricultural land needs to be directed to be protected or conserved, while shrubs and open land need to be directed into potential land for apple orchards development in Batu City.

Abstract

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture, including on peat soil. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of the application of paraquat, difenoconazole, and butylphenyl methylcarbamate (BPMC) on CO2 emissions and concentrations of phenolic acids in a peat soil. Peat soil sample was taken in District of Pulang Pisau, Central Kalimantan. The peat soil was applied with 1.89 mg kg-1 paraquat, 1.72 mg kg-1 difenoconazole and 1.65 mg kg-1 butylphenyl methylcarbamate (BPMC), then the soil was incubated for 1, 2, 4 , 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 26 and 30 days. The results showed that the application of pesticides on peat soil increased CO2emission, and decreased CH4 emission and phenolic acid concentrations up to 30 days of incubation. The CO2 emmisions were derived from C of degraded pesticides and from C of phenolic acids, although the oxidation reaction was not accompanied by the change of soil pH. Keyword: CO2 emission, phenolic acids, butylphenyl methylcarbamate (BPMC), difenoconazole, paraquat, peat soil

Abstract

Land application of liquid waste containing palm oil mill effluent (LW-POME) as soil ameliorant can cause water contamination due to its high content of nitrate if improperly treated. Indonesia is rich with volcanic tuff materials that contain variable charged soil clay minerals. This study was aimed at to extract nanoclays (fraction sized <200 nm) from volcanic tuffs of Mt. Salak, West Java, Indonesia, and evaluate their potential use as adsorbent of nitrate in LW-POME. By applying dispersion, ultrasonication, centrifugation, and dialysis separation techniques, it could be extracted positively charged nanoclays nc3 and nc4 from the respectively tuff materials tv3 and tv4. Their potential use as natural adsorbent of nitrate as anionic contaminant was evaluated using Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. After 48 h equilibration, it could be extracted 4.33 mg nc3/g tv3 and 7.73 mg nc4/g tv4 with nitrate adsorption maxima of 48.3 and 40 mg/g for nc3 and nc4, respectively. The removal of nitrate in the LW-POME from 62 to 20 mg/L as to comply with the Indonesian liquid waste quality standard required 29.81 mg nc3/L or 39.34 mg nc4/L. The extracted nanoclays were considered prospective to be utilized as natural adsorbent for nitrate removal in LW-POME. Abstract

Frond and leaflet residues from pruning of oil palm which are applied as mulch on oil palm plantation will decompose and can be source of organic matter and some essential nutrients. Information about how much the released nutrients from the decomposition processes of frond and leaflet of oil palm is limited. The objective of this research was to study the period (two years) patterns of nutrient release and decomposition of frond and leaflet of oil palm at different burial depth (0 to 30 cm) in peat soil. Decomposition of frond and leaflet of oil palm did not have a different pattern in mass loss, chemical content changes of C/N, N content, P content, P released, however, it has different pattern in N released. During two years of decomposition, frond and leaflet lost 88% and 86% of its initial weight and released 51% and 83% of N, also it released P 87% and 93% respectively. Frond and leaflet from pruning of oil palm should be returned to plantation area for one source of nutrients beside fertilizer.

Abstract

Weed is one of the important constraints in rice production, and therefore its effective control measure should be considered that the production can be optimized. The application of no tillage by using herbicide is assumed more effective and efficient than conventional one. However, herbicide which is used as contionusly can influence residue in soil, plant and rice. The objectives of the research were to analyze the effect of no tillage and its combination of IPA glyphosate herbicide concentration levels to rice productivity and to analyze IPA glyphosate herbicide residue in soil, straw and rice. The study was conducted in the field by using IPA glyphosate herbicide with five treatments, namely maximum tillage (Gm), no herbicide spraying (G0), glyphosate herbicide doses 1.5 l ha-1(G1), 3 l ha-1 (G2) and 4.5 l ha-1(G3). The analysis of glyphosate residue was done in soil, straw and rice samples by using HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) method. The research results showed that Gm and G1 treatments had highest with rice yield average were 938 g m-2 and 728 g m-2, respectively. Gm treatmen more profitable with R / C ratio of 1.84 with a profit of Rp 13.714 million, but using more labor than G1 treatment. Thereby, no-tillage treatment (G1) could be done by using glyphosate herbicide in doses 1.5 l ha-1, economically. Glyphosate contained in soil samples, straw, and rice proved that using of gyphosate intensively could have negative impacts on soil microbial activity, plant resistance to plant diseases and residue of glyphosate carried by plants. Glyphosate residue concentration was highest found on rice sample in treatments G3 was 0.272 mg kg-1. These glyphosate residual values on rice was highest than maximum residue limit which was decided by Indonesia government (0.1 mg kg-1). Glyphosate residues contained in food is not within safe limits if taken every day and can cause adverse effects to human health. Keywords: glyphosate herbicide, maximum residue limits, paddy field, weed control
