Abstract

The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model is one of the practical approaches to increase students' active participation, independent thinking skills, and awareness of the learning process, which will improve students' metacognition skills. Metacognition enables students to organize their learning strategies and improve learning outcomes. This research aims to identify, classify, and evaluate research results from primary studies that apply the PBL Model in measuring the improvement of students' metacognition skills in Indonesia using the systematic literature review (SLR) method. The protocol used in SLR refers to The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement, which includes the following four stages: (1) identification, (2) screening, (3) eligibility, (4) included. This systematic review leveraged covidence for comprehensive article screening and analysis, focusing on 30 carefully selected academic publications spanning from 2015 to 2024. This study examines the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and its impact on students' mathematical metacognition skills. The analytical framework encompassed multifaceted research dimensions, including educational levels, geographical research contexts, publication timelines, mathematical domains, research methodologies, journal indexing criteria, and research outcomes. The analysis unveiled that publication frequency peaked in 2024, with a notable emphasis on secondary school-level investigations. The methodological analysis indicated a predominant preference for quantitative research approaches, particularly in studies examining spatial geometry concepts. The consolidated results provided substantial evidence that the implementation of the PBL model yielded positive and significant improvements in students' mathematical metacognition capabilities.        Keywords: metacognition, problem-based learning model, systematic literature review.

Abstract

Discovery-based learning plays a crucial role in enhancing students' mathematical understanding and critical thinking skills. This study analyzes the implementation of four major models Discovery Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 52 Scopus-indexed studies. The findings indicate that these models effectively improve conceptual understanding, higher-order thinking skills, and student motivation. Data from TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) 2019 and PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2022 confirm that countries consistently implementing these models demonstrate superior mathematical performance. The integration of technology, such as GeoGebra and e-learning platforms, further enriches learning experiences and enhances instructional effectiveness. However, challenges remain, including time constraints, uneven understanding of implementation, and difficulties in assessment design. This study reaffirms that discovery-based learning is an appropriate approach for 21st-century mathematics education. Recommendations include increasing research at the primary and secondary education levels, exploring artificial intelligence-based learning technologies, and developing more effective assessment strategies to support the implementation of this model across diverse educational contexts.      Keywords: discovery-based learning, mathematics education, systematic literature review.

Abstract

Mathematical Problem-Solving Ability (MPSA) is a crucial skill in mathematics learning, as it plays a role in understanding mathematical concepts and preparing students to face challenges in everyday life. This study aims to examine the heterogeneous influence of affective aspects such as self-efficacy (SE), self-regulated learning (SRL), self-concept (SC), and mathematical disposition (MD) on students' mathematical problem-solving ability (MPSA) through a systematic literature review. Data were collected from research articles published between 2019 and 2024, indexed in SINTA and Scopus, following the PRISMA guidelines. The analysis results indicate that SE has the strongest correlation with MPSA, followed by MD. Variability in SC highlights a context-dependent influence. This study also provides a comprehensive mapping related to publication years, sample sizes, educational levels, and research locations, showing trends in the variation of publications each year. These findings emphasize that educational interventions should integrate affective aspects of MPSA holistically, with strategies tailored to different educational levels and regional disparities. Therefore, recommendations for future research include developing more holistic learning strategies that integrate all four affective aspects to achieve better learning outcomes.      Keywords: mathematical problem-solving ability, self-efficacy, self-regulated learning, self-concept, mathematical disposition, systematic literature review.

Abstract

Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to describe the Indonesian students’ numeracy skills in secondary school in solving PISA mathematical problems based on four contents namely space and shape, change and relationships, quantity, uncertainty and data. Methods: A meta-synthesis was used in this study. The final 18 articles used in this study which were published in national and international journals in 2016 to 2023, obtained from databases in Publish or Perish software. This entire articles use descriptive qualitative research that describes the numeracy abilities of Indonesian students in solving PISA model questions. The included studies were structured using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 flow diagram and analyzed using Braun & Clarke's six-step thematic analysis. Finding: The results of this study indicate that overall Indonesian students in secondary school still have difficulties in using mathematical operation, understanding problems, using strategies, and interpreting the results of solving the PISA model questions in terms of space and shape, change and relationships, quantity, uncertainty, and data content. Conclusion: Numeracy skills are fundamental for students to navigate and solve problems effectively, especially in assessments like PISA. Teachers were recommended to frequently provide non-routine problems like the PISA model, which can explore students' numeracy skills, so that students become accustomed to solving high-level problems and their numeracy skills also improve.         Keywords: numeracy skills, PISA mathematical problems, and meta-synthesis. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i1.pp14-26

Abstract

Derivative material is essential in developing students’ critical thinking skills and its application in various scientific fields, specifically in mathematics. However, numerous studies revealed that many students still considered this material difficult, which often causes students to make mistakes in solving derivative problems. This study aims to analyze students' errors in solving derivative problems. This research method used systematic literature review with data synthesis process, qualitative data analysis through thematic analysis, and PRISMA method for data selection which obtained 10 articles from 232 articles on the Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Scopus pages. The analysis results showed uneven fluctuations in the number of studies, peaking in 2022. The distribution of research covers nine provinces in Indonesia, with a dominance in the NTB province, although the distribution is still uneven. Newman’s theory became the primary approach to analyzing student errors. Most of the research was published in SINTA 4 and SINTA 5 journals, while contributions in highly reputable journals are still minimal. The most dominant student error occurred at the encoding/looking back stage, which was caused by a lack of understanding of the derivative concept, inaccuracy, rushing, and lack of habit to re-examine the work. Other errors include conceptual, procedural, and technical errors related to derivative facts, concepts, operations, and principles. As a solution, interactive teaching materials based on the Newman procedure was recommended to improve students’ understanding of derivative concepts.         Keywords: derivative, mathematics, student errors, systematic literature review. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1693-1704

Abstract

The Mathematics Education Game is a gamification-based teaching material specifically designed to develop mathematical creative thinking skills and self-regulated learningin high school students. This game adopts a Snakes and Ladders format, consisting of three learning modules covering core trigonometry: basic concepts, quadrants, special angles, trigonometric equations, trigonometric identities, double-angle identities, sums and differences of angles, and multiplication of trigonometric functions. The game developed in this study, Attractive Trigonometric Snakes and Ladders (ULTRA), aims to serve as an engaging digital learning resource for students in grades XI and XII. The purpose of this study is to examine the improvement in creative thinking skills and self-regulated learning of students who use ULTRA. The research method uses the ADDIE model and is evaluated through three research instruments: (1) a mathematical creative thinking test containing four essay questions to measure fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration; (2) a 24-item self-regulated learning questionnaire that assesses goal setting, monitoring, strategy use, and reflection; and (3) a 15-item student response questionnaire to assess usability and engagement. Effectiveness was analyzed using normalized gain, while validity and practicality were reviewed through expert assessment and descriptive data. The research subjects were 496 students from 16 classes, comprising 247 in the experimental class and 249 in the control class. This study concluded that ULTRA is valid, practical, and has potential as a digital medium for mathematics learning. Effectiveness testing conducted in four schools showed a moderate increase in N-Gain in mathematical creative thinking skills, as well as positive behavioral indicators of learning independence, indicating that ULTRA strengthens students' higher-order thinking skills and independence. Overall, the findings indicate that the ULTRA game has the potential to improve mathematical creative thinking and self-regulated learningwhile providing an engaging digital learning experience for students.   Keywords: education game, creative thinking, self-regulated learning.
