Abstract

Hybrid learning implementation is closely related with technology. In designing hybrid lessons, lecturers need to have both the pedagogical and content-related skills that make the best use of technology so that it also improves the students’ skills, including their computational thinking skills. The purpose of this research is to examine whether a hybrid learning model based on Technology Pedagogy and Content Knowledge (TPACK) affects the computational thinking skills achievement in a valid, practical, and effective manner. This research is development research using the Plomp’s model and is described in a qualitative descriptive manner. The participants were lecturers and 38 first-year students at Primary School Teacher Education Study Program of Padang State University. The instruments were validation sheets, practicality assessment sheets by lecturers, questionnaire sheets for students, and computational thinking skills test questions. The results of the validity test show that in terms of content, language, and e-learning practice, they all met very valid criteria with an average percentage score of 85.9%, 86.2%, and 84.1%, respectively. The practicality test results of model handbooks, Semester Lesson Plans, Lecture Program Units, computational thinking questions, additional material, and e-learning model meet the practical criteria with an average percentage score of 77.5%, 86.8%, 89.1%, 83.8%, 79%, and 82.4%, respectively. The average percentage of student assessment scores is 82.9% and meets the practical criteria. The results of the effectiveness test showed that 21.9% of students had reached the moderate level, 6.3% reached the low level, and 71.9% reached the very low level. This study recommends future researchers to develop a hybrid learning model based on TPACK to achieve other 21st-century abilities.

Abstract

Teachers play a crucial role in disseminating knowledge in educational settings, typically adhering to a credulist-testimonial approach outlined in pedagogical literature. Consequently, students often acquire knowledge through this method, potentially leading to discrepancies between their conceptual understanding and the intended educational objectives. This study investigates the phenomenon of learning obstacles encountered by junior high school students, with a particular emphasis on mathematics education. It is part of a series of Didactical Design Research (DDR) projects aimed at developing effective instructional materials. Employing an interpretive paradigm within the DDR framework, the study adopts a qualitative approach utilizing hermeneutic phenomenology design. Various research tools such as diagnostic assessments, interview guidelines, observation sheets, and audio recordings are employed. Data analysis is conducted using the Constant Comparative Method (CCM). The findings highlight ontogenic, didactic, and epistemological obstacles students face, stemming from factors such as a lack of interest in mathematics, ineffective material presentation, and misconceptions regarding set concepts. These results underscore the importance of educators employing effective teaching strategies to help students overcome these obstacles and succeed in their mathematics education.

Abstract

Junior high school students often have difficulties in understanding linear equations in one variable (LEOV). Therefore, this research aimed to enhance junior high school students' understanding of LEOV by developing and implementing effective learning activities. The research was conducted as design research in three stages: preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The participants of the research were 50 seventh-grade students from two junior high schools in Bandung, Indonesia. The data collected from observations, interviews, and student worksheets were analyzed using triangulation to ensure the validity and reliability of the research. The research explored how the teacher explained LEOV in four meetings and how they contributed to students’ understanding, where the first meeting dealt with open sentences, closed sentences, and the definition of LEOV from the context of distance and displacement, the second focused on solving LEOV from the context of two passing trains, and third focused on fractional LEOV from the context of jogging, and the fourth provided the students an opportunity to apply the LEOV concept from a dynamo-powered toy car simulation. The implication of the research is that teachers can significantly improve students' understanding of LEOV by implementing effective learning activities as identified here.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a didactic design of the concept of the surface area of a flat-sided prism by considering the stages of van Hiele’s theory as a learning trajectory. The didactic design of the concept of the surface area of a flat-sided prism based on van Hiele’s theory has been adapted to the pandemic situation and implemented to online learning. The research method employed was a qualitative method with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The initial step in this research was to test the concept of the surface area of a flat-sided prism on 53 9th-grade students for the 2019/2020 school year to identify learning obstacles. Following the identification of the learning obstacles, an initial didactic design was then drawn up by applying the phases in van Hiele’s model of geometric thinking. The didactic design prepared was subsequently implemented online to 8th-grade junior high school students. The results of the implementation of the didactic design were analyzed as the final product. The conclusion from this research is that by using a didactic design that considers the stages of van Hiele geometry in understanding the concept of surface area of a flat-sided prism, it can help students understand the concept of a flat-sided prism correctly. It was found that students' understanding of the concept of the surface area of a prism improved from visual level to informal deduction.DOI : https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.1.13789.73-88
