Abstract

This study aims to determine the need for developing STEM-ESD-based teaching materials as a learning resource for students in physics subjects in high school. This research uses mixed methods, which consisted of qualitative data and quantitative data. This research involved 26 respondents spread across several schools in Majalengka The instruments used are 17 questionnaires, namely 8 questions to identify difficulties in solving physics problems, 7 questions about student responses to the teaching materials used and 2 questions about causal factors and expected textbooks. Based on the preliminary study conducted, it is known that the teaching materials used so far have not met the indicators of good teaching materials, students have difficulty solving physics problems with a percentage of 73%, the student responses to the teaching materials used with a percentage of 81%, so require STEM-ESD-based teaching materials as a resource study. The results of the preliminary study also see that the teaching materials developed later can measure critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Based on this, the use of teaching materials as a learning resource is needed by students, so it is necessary to conduct a needs analysis in the development of STEM-ESD-based teaching materials

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate first-year university students’ experimental design skills in regional context of at a private teacher training institution (LPTK) in Singkawang, West Kalimantan. Utilizing a survey design, data were collected from 112 participants with diverse genders and secondary education backgrounds (Science, Vocational, and Social Sciences). The assessment utilized four targeted items from the Scientific Inquiry Literacy (ScInqLit) instrument developed by Wenning, translated and contextualized into the Indonesian context. Data were evaluated using Rasch model analysis to examine both overall competence levels and potential demographic bias through Differential Item Functioning (DIF). The results indicated that the students’ ability in designing experiments was remarkably low, as evidenced by a mean person measure of -1.15 logits, which falls substantially below the item difficulty baseline (0.0 logit). Furthermore, the DIF analysis revealed that all item probabilities exceeded 0.05, demonstrating that the instrument was free from gender and academic background biases. This neutrality implies that the low competence in designing experiments is a widespread issue across all student demographics. These findings emphasize an urgent need for LPTKs to redesign foundational science curricula, shifting from conventional “cookbook” laboratory tasks to explicit inquiry-based interventions to foster robust experimental design skill.

Abstract

A US-based Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) identifies 21st-century competencies through the 4Cs: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. Communication is an essential competency in physics learning, particularly scientific communication, because students are required to express concepts, interpret data, and present scientific ideas systematically. This study aims to describe students’ scientific communication skills on heat and heat transfer using the Spector-Levy analysis at senior high schools in Bandung City. This study employed a survey method involving 34 students. The instrument was an essay test covering four aspects: scientific reading, scientific writing, listening and observing, and information representation. The data were analyzed based on mean scores and skill categories, supported by Rasch analysis to examine item quality and the relationship between students’ abilities and item difficulty. The results show that students’ scientific communication skills were generally in the moderate category, with different achievements across aspects. Information representation achieved the highest score, while listening and observing achieved the lowest. These findings indicate that students are relatively able to present information visually, but still have difficulty interpreting observations and connecting data with heat concepts. Therefore, problem-solving-based physics learning is needed to train students to analyze problems, justify explanations, and communicate scientific findings effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the levels of digital literacy and critical thinking skills among physics education students as prospective science educators, as well as to provide an empirical basis for improving instructional practices. A quantitative descriptive approach was used, involving 31 undergraduate students through a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using validated instruments consisting of a digital literacy test based on five competency areas-information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, digital safety, and problem solving and a critical thinking test covering five indicators: focusing on questions, analyzing arguments, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, and evaluating definitions. The results indicate that both digital literacy and critical thinking skills are categorized as low. Students demonstrate relatively higher performance in communication and collaboration (28.3%) and deductive reasoning (24.1%), while the lowest achievements are observed in digital content creation and digital problem-solving (15.1%), as well as inductive reasoning (12.2%). These findings suggest that students tend to function as passive users of digital technology, with limited ability to critically evaluate information and construct knowledge. This study contributes to the field of physics education by providing an integrated profile of digital literacy and critical thinking within a specific disciplinary context. The findings underscore the urgent need for pedagogical innovations, particularly technology-integrated and inquiry-based learning approaches, to enhance higher-order thinking skills in the digital learning environment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the validity, reliability, level of difficulty and differentiating power of critical thinking skills test items, particularly on the topic of temperature, heat, and expansion. The test items consist of eight essay questions which refer to the eight elements of critical thinking according to Inch. The subjects of this research were 31 students in class VIII of junior high school. Before being tested on students, the critical thinking skills test items were evaluated by five experts. The method used to analyze validity, reliability, level of difficulty, and differentiating power of items is the Rasch model using MINISTEP software version 4.3.1. The results of the analysis show that the test items can be used to test students' critical thinking skills on the topic of temperature, heat, and expansion. For future education practice, the test items can be combined with education technology, like flipbooks, to know the development of students' critical thinking skills

Abstract

Integrating local science into science learning benefits students and the culture. However, science teaching tends to focus only on the scientific content presented in the books but ignores the local culture. This paper explores local science in community cultural activities to be implemented in science learning to introduce students to cultural values following the concept of science. It identifies local science, describes the oral arguments produced by the tribal council, and analyzes the lesson plan by five science teachers in the Nagekeo district, East Nusa Tenggara. The data used in this analysis are observation and identification, interviews, and assessment sheets. The findings show that the local science in Nagekeo cultural activities that can be integrated into science learning includes the traditional unit and measurement systems, Newton's laws in their application to the traditional game, biodiversity in the traditional hunt, the concept of heat transfer, and its application in the construction of traditional houses, and vibrations, waves, and sounds in the traditional musical instrument. Recommendations from this research are embracing local science in science learning to provide meaningful learning for students and preserve local culture for each generation in the future so that it does not become extinct.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students’ collaborative skills in renewable energy learning, an essential skill in 21st-century education. This study employs a descriptive approach using qualitative methods to detail the level of students’ collaborative skills. Data was collected using a Likert-scale collaborative skills questionnaire. The research subjects consisted of 30 high school students, and data was analyzed using the average percentage scores for each collaborative skill indicator. The results indicate that most students possess relatively high collaborative skills, with the majority scoring above 70%. The average score on the collaboration indicators was 80.33%, with Indicator 1 scoring 81, Indicator 2 scoring 78, and Indicator 3 scoring 82. The respondent with the highest collaboration score was R13, with a score of 97%, while the respondent with the lowest collaboration score was R17, with a score of 25%. The significant variation in scores, ranging from 25% to 97%, indicates substantial differences in student collaboration skills. Factors influencing these skills include ineffective communication, poorly managed differences of opinion, and low empathy toward group members’ contributions. The implications of this study emphasize the need for collaboration-enhancing strategies, such as interpersonal communication training, conflict management, and empathy development within groups. These strategies should be explicitly integrated into project-based learning designs, particularly regarding renewable energy, to enhance students’ overall collaboration effectiveness.
