Abstract

Secondary metabolites in the medicinal plant Gynura procumbens have various beneficial pharmacological activities. However, the limited availability of these beneficial compounds has constrained the possibilities for therapeutic applications. Exogenously applied methyl jasmonate (MeJa) as an elicitor has been reported to trigger the accumulation of secondary metabolites in plant tissues cultured in vitro. This study aimed to assess how varying periods of MeJa elicitation affect the growth and accumulation of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in adventitious root cultures of G. procumbens within a balloon-type bubble bioreactor (BTBB). Adventitious roots were induced from leaf and stem explants obtained from established in vitro shoots. Upon transfer to the BTBB, the cultures were supplemented with 100 µM MeJa and sampled at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. The results revealed that including MeJa in the culture medium significantly boosted growth and the accumulation of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in G. procumbens. The highest biomass and concentrations of phenolic and flavonoid compounds were observed after 3 weeks of elicitation. These findings highlight the potential of MeJa elicitation for enhancing the production of valuable bioactive compounds in G. procumbens adventitious root cultures, showcasing its utility for industrial applications.

Abstract

The testes are vital for spermatogenesis and steroid hormone production, thus serving as a critical biomarker for monitoring testicular function through organ development analysis. Until now, there has been no information on the morphoanatomical development of testicular organs in day-old Alabio ducks (DOD). This knowledge is crucial for optimizing reproductive strategies and manipulations. This study aimed to determine the growth and morphoanatomical development of testes in Alabio ducks during the starter period. A purposive sample of forty DOD male Alabio ducks was observed and measured weekly for eight weeks. Variables included testicular morphoanatomy, weight, liver weight, gonadal-somatic index (GSI), and hepatic-somatic index (HSI). Results indicate that bean-shaped, creamy-white testes are located in the abdominal cavity near the spine, attached dorsally and anterior to the kidneys. Testicular weight, length, reproductive tract weight and length, and GSI peaked at eight weeks (0.768 ± 0.06 g, 1.73 ± 0.20 cm, 0.79 ± 0.02 g, and 13.32 ± 0.65, respectively; p < 0.01). Testicular weight, liver weight, GSI, and HSI differed significantly weekly (p < 0.01). In conclusion, testicular weight in Alabio ducks increases steadily during the first eight weeks, with bean-shaped testes developing bilaterally in the abdominal cavity, attached dorsally and constrained by the mesorchial ligament.

Abstract

The intestinal microbe population has a considerable impact on the physiological state of poultry. Nutritional intervention can be used to enhance the equilibrium of the gut microbiota in chickens, leading to good physiological effects. Various nutritional interventions have been implemented, including feed additives, vitamins, and fermented and functional feeds. While numerous studies have shown the efficacy of nutritional strategies, others have noted the variability of these interventions on poultry’s physiological state. Various factors can influence the effectiveness of nutritional interventions on the physiological conditions of poultry, such as the types of feed additives or active components, duration and method of administration, feed composition, environmental conditions during rearing, quality of day-old-chick, type and age of poultry, hygiene, infection, stress, and other related variables. Feed additives, when combined with nutritional components or other active chemicals, can have synergistic and complementary effects. These impacts could improve the effectiveness and reliability of the nutritional interventions on physiological parameters and poultry productivity. Furthermore, combinations can include feed additives or active components like probiotics and acidifiers, probiotics and enzymes, phytobiotics and enzymes, and plant-based materials and chitosan. The combinations show synergistic and complementary benefits, improving physiological conditions in chickens more than using feed additives or active substances alone. Overall, nutritional intervention can be used to improve the microbial balance in poultry intestines and boost their physiological state. Moreover, integrating feed additives with other active components might enhance the physiological circumstances of chickens due to the synergistic effect produced by their combination.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Case Method and Team-Based Project learning approaches within the context of the Geography Education Department's cultural and political geography courses at Universitas Negeri Medan. These methods, relevant to the Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, aim to enhance student skills through active, applied learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research gathered data via questionnaires distributed through Google Forms to a sample of 67 students out of a total population of 454 from the 2019-2022 academic cohorts. Findings indicate that the duration required for the Case Method varies with the complexity of the cases, ranging from 15-30 minutes for simpler issues to over 60 minutes for more intricate problems. The Team-Based Project approach necessitates 7 to 8 meetings, including initial planning and subsequent implementation phases, monitored by lecturers through direct communication or digital platforms like LMS forums or Zoom channels. However, the study reveals inefficiencies in applying these learning methods within the department, attributed to the substantial workload imposed by the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) and a lack of student engagement in assignments. It suggests a comprehensive revision of IQF assignments towards more discussion-oriented and field-practical approaches to address these challenges.

Abstract

The capital structure of a business directly affects its profitability. The profitability of a company is directly correlated to its capital structure. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between capital structure and financial performance. An empirical study best describes this sort of research. For the years 2016–2020, PT H. M. Sampoerna was the sample that was utilized. This study employs quantitative methods for data analysis. This study's findings reveal that ROA and ROE, two measures of profitability, are influenced by capital structure variables such as the Debt Ratio (DR) and the Debt to Equity Ratio (DER). Mathematical analysis of PT H. M. Sampoerna's processed financial reports from 2016 to 2020 reveals that a higher Debt Ratio (DR) has an effect on the company's profit level, with a lower profit level being the result of a higher debt value. A higher Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) indicates that a larger amount of capital is required to cover the debt, but a lower amount of profit is produced by the business.
