Abstract

Background of study: The natural disaster in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, have disrupted access to health services and increased the risk of acute illness, exacerbating chronic illnesses, and causing psychosocial problems. This situation demands a rapid, integrated, and adaptive health response to the limitations of post-disaster facilities. This community service activity aims to improve access and quality of health services for disaster- affected communities through an integrated approach to medical services and logistics distribution. Methods: The program was implemented over three days at several locations and health posts in Agam Regency. Activities included cross-sector coordination, implementation of health services, daily evaluation, reporting, and planning for sustainability. Interventions included basic and advanced medical services, post-operative wound care, chronic disease management, home-visits, and medical assistance. Result: Health services were provided for more than 200 patients, predominantly with cases of hypertension, upper respiratory tract infections, dermatitis, musculoskeletal disorders, and diabetes mellitus. The home visit approach successfully reached vulnerable groups with limited mobility. Conclusion: The use of simple health technology and family involvement improved continuity of care and community empowerment. This program has supported physical health recovery in post-disaster communities and has the potential to be replicated in other disaster-affected areas.

Abstract

Kesehatan telinga adalah kondisi yang memengaruhi kualitas hidup seseorang, terutama pada kelompok wanita usia lanjut yang rentan terhadap gangguan pendengaran. Edukasi kesehatan telinga sangat penting untuk meningkatkan pemahaman terkait faktor risiko, tanda awal gangguan, dan langkah preventif yang dapat diterapkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini menggunakan pendekatan Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), meliputi penyuluhan, pemeriksaan pendengaran berkala, dan panduan praktis untuk menjaga kesehatan telinga. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman peserta terkait perawatan telinga, pentingnya deteksi dini, dan cara menjaga kebersihan telinga yang benar. Edukasi mengenai faktor risiko yang dapat menurunkan fungsi pendengaran disampaikan kepada para wanita usia lanjut seperti paparan suara keras dan infeksi berulang agar mereka dapat menerapkan langkah-langkah preventif. Edukasi yang diberikan memungkinkan peserta untuk lebih waspada terhadap kesehatan pendengaran mereka, sehingga mengurangi risiko penurunan fungsi pendengaran. Edukasi kesehatan telinga berperan penting dalam meningkatkan kesadaran dan kemampuan wanita usia lanjut untuk menjaga kesehatan pendengaran, yang berpotensi meningkatkan kualitas hidup mereka.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is an escalating public health concern, particularly among productive-age populations in urban settings. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of WHR and HG as low-cost, non-invasive tools for early diabetes risk detection. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 539 productive-age adults (>18 years) across multiple districts in Jakarta during 2024–2025 using consecutive sampling. Fasting blood glucose, WHR, and HG were assessed. Multiple linear regression was applied to examine associations between WHR, HG, and fasting glucose. A binary logistic regression model with backward likelihood ratio selection was used to identify predictors of diabetes. Results: WHR showed a significant positive association with fasting glucose (B = 72.647; p = 0.001), while HG demonstrated a significant inverse association (B = –0.468; p = 0.047). Logistic regression analysis indicated that lower HG (B = –0.867; Exp(B) = 0.420; p = 0.001) and higher WHR (B = –2.413; Exp(B) = 0.090; p = 0.018) were independently associated with diabetes risk. The model constant was 4.535 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: A model integrating WHR and HG shows promise for early diabetes risk stratification among productive-age adults in Jakarta, supporting their utility in community-based screening.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris, commonly known as acne, is a dermatological condition that is common among adolescents, affecting approximately 95% of this population. This multifactorial disease consists of genetic, hormonal, microbial, and environmental factors. The main harmful processes are more sebum production, hyperkeratinization, and colonisation with Propionibacterium acnes, which makes porphyrins that make the skin swell. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) methodology, which involves the facial skin analysis of 170 participants. According to the examination results, the average porphyrin content on the participants' facial skin was 63%. Early detection through comprehensive skin assessment and educational interventions is critical to preventing chronic and recurrent episodes, thereby improving physical and psychological well-being.

Abstract

Introduction. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disorder and is considered one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. It is commonly associated with aging and characterized by chronic pain, joint stiffness, and limitations in daily activities. This study aimed to evaluate the association between lipid profile and body composition with the severity of OA, as measured by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score. Methods. This cross-sectional study involved 67 community-dwelling older adults. Assessments included fasting lipid profiles (HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, Apo A, Apo B, and triglycerides), body fat distribution and muscle mass, anthropometric measurements (body mass index, waist circumference, and hip circumference), and handgrip strength. Associations between variables were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test with a significance level of 5%. Results. Correlation analysis demonstrated associations between lipid profile levels and worsening OA symptoms. Higher Apo B levels were associated with increased trunk fat (r=0.47, p<0.001) and greater joint pain (r=0.35, p=0.004). Lower HDL levels were associated with increased visceral fat (r=−0.37, p=0.002) and greater joint stiffness (r=0.26, p=0.038). Greater upper extremity muscle mass was associated with less severe pain (r=−0.38, p<0.001), while higher body mass index and waist circumference were associated with higher WOMAC scores (r=0.32, p=0.009). Conclusion. These findings support the concept that OA is a systemic condition influenced by metabolic and biomechanical pathways. OA management should therefore include metabolic control, optimization of body composition, and routine monitoring of lipid profiles and anthropometric indices as part of non-pharmacological therapy and preventive strategies.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Handgrip strength is a simple indicator of peripheral muscle strength that may reflect pulmonary function status, particularly in urban adult populations exposed to high levels of air pollution. However, empirical evidence regarding the association between handgrip strength and predicted pulmonary function parameters in Indonesia remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between handgrip strength and pulmonary function parameters (% predicted) in an urban adult population. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 539 adults (≥18 years) across five administrative regions of DKI Jakarta. Pulmonary function parameters assessed included vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁), and the FEV₁/FVC ratio, all expressed as % predicted. Handgrip strength was measured bilaterally and averaged. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed using Spearman’s correlation test. Mean handgrip strength showed a significant positive correlation with VC (% predicted) (r = 0.182; p 0.001) and FVC (% predicted) (r = 0.222; p 0.001). A weaker positive correlation was observed between left-hand grip strength and FEV₁ (% predicted) (r = 0.091; p = 0.034). In contrast, the FEV₁/FVC ratio (% predicted) demonstrated consistent and significant negative correlations with right-hand, left-hand, and mean handgrip strength (r ranging from −0.186 to −0.200; p 0.001). Handgrip strength is significantly associated with pulmonary function capacity (% predicted), particularly volume-related parameters, and may serve as a simple screening indicator of pulmonary function in urban adult populations. Keywords: Handgrip, Pulmonary Function, Spirometry, Adults, Urban Population.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Skin health disorders are common among young adults and can be influenced by various factors, including body mass index (BMI). Obesity is known to be associated with chronic inflammation, adipokine dysfunction, and physiological alterations of the skin; however, empirical evidence among Indonesian university students remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between BMI and skin health parameters among medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Tarumanagara. This cross-sectional study was conducted from September to November 2025. A total of 118 respondents were selected using a total sampling technique. Height was measured using a GEA stadiometer, body weight using the Karada Omron HBF-375 scale, and skin parameters were assessed using the Smart Skin Analyzer Bitmoji. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, with Spearman correlation applied and a significance level set at p0,05. Most skin parameters showed no significant relationship with BMI, including sebum level, pores, spots, wrinkles, acne, comedones, pigmentation, skin sensitivity, and UV-induced acne (p0.05). One parameter demonstrated a significant correlation: collagen level (r=0.242; p=0.008), indicating that higher BMI was associated with higher collagen levels. Conclusion: BMI was not significantly correlated with most skin health parameters; however, it showed a significant positive association with collagen levels. These findings highlight the need for further research to explore metabolic mechanisms influencing collagen integrity in young adult populations.Keywords: Adipokines, Body Mass Index, Collagen, Skin Health, University Students.  ABSTRAK Gangguan kesehatan kulit merupakan masalah yang umum terjadi pada dewasa muda dan dapat dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor, termasuk indeks massa tubuh (IMT). Obesitas diketahui berhubungan dengan inflamasi kronis, disfungsi adipokin, dan perubahan fisiologis kulit, namun bukti empiris pada populasi mahasiswa Indonesia masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara IMT dengan parameter kesehatan kulit pada mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Tarumanagara. Penelitian menggunakan desain potong lintang dan dilakukan pada September–November 2025. Sebanyak 118 responden dipilih dengan teknik total sampling. Pengukuran tinggi badan menggunakan stadiometer GEA, berat badan menggunakan timbangan Karada Omron HBF-375, sedangkan parameter kulit diukur menggunakan Smart Skin Analyzer Bitmoji. Analisis dilakukan secara univariat dan bivariat menggunakan korelasi Spearman dengan batas kemaknaan p0,05. Sebagian besar parameter kulit tidak menunjukkan hubungan bermakna dengan IMT, termasuk kadar sebum, pori, flek, keriput, jerawat, komedo, pigmentasi, sensitivitas, dan jerawat UV (p0,05). Satu parameter menunjukkan korelasi signifikan, yaitu kadar kolagen (r=0,242; p=0,008), menandakan IMT yang lebih tinggi berhubungan dengan peningkatan kadar kolagen. IMT tidak berkorelasi signifikan dengan sebagian besar parameter kesehatan kulit, namun memiliki hubungan positif bermakna dengan kadar kolagen. Temuan ini menunjukkan perlunya penelitian lanjutan terhadap mekanisme metabolik yang memengaruhi integritas kolagen pada populasi dewasa muda. Kata Kunci: Adipokin, Indeks Massa Tubuh, Kolagen, Kesehatan Kulit, Mahasiswa.

Abstract

Sarcopenia is a common condition among the elderly. Identifying individual risk factors associated with sarcopenia is essential for developing effective prevention strategies. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between insulin-like growth factor (IGF) levels and the incidence of sarcopenia, as assessed through mid-upper arm circumference and calf circumference, among older adults residing at Panti Werdha Bina Bhakti. Anthropometric measurements were obtained using a standard measuring tape, while IGF levels were measured through venous blood sampling and analyzed in a laboratory setting. Statistical analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation test. The study found that the average age of participants was 74.34 years, with 84.1% being female. The mean mid-upper arm circumference was 23.73 cm, and the mean calf circumference was 28.58 cm. The average IGF level was 14.43. Spearman’s rho analysis revealed a significant correlation between mid-upper arm and calf circumferences (r = 0.550; p < 0.001), as well as between mid-upper arm circumference and IGF levels (r = 0.237; p = 0.032). However, no significant correlation was observed between calf circumference and IGF levels (r = 0.176; p = 0.114). In conclusion, mid-upper arm circumference was significantly correlated with both calf circumference and IGF levels, whereas calf circumference showed no significant correlation with IGF in this elderly population. Abstract

Visceral fat, associated with increased risks of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, plays a crucial role in metabolic health. Its proximity to vital organs allows it to release harmful cytokines and hormones. While CT and MRI are the gold standard for assessing visceral fat, their cost and accessibility limits their use, highlighting the need for alternative methods. This study investigates the potential of simple laboratory variables such as hemoglobin and anthropometric measurements containing BMI, body height, and muscle mass as predictors of visceral fat. This study aims to identify practical, cost-effective tools for monitoring visceral fat, supporting disease prevention and management, particularly in limited resources settings. This study was conducted at St. Assisi Church with 32 respondents. Statistical analysis applies multiple linear regression to examine the relationship between anthropometric measurements, laboratory variables, and visceral fat. The multiple linear regression analysis identifies hemoglobin, body weight, body height, body fat, and arm total muscle as significant predictors of the dependent variable. Hemoglobin, body height, body fat, and arm total muscle show negative associations, while body weight positively predicts the outcome. These findings highlight the critical roles of these variables in influencing the dependent variable. This study identifies hemoglobin, body weight, height, fat, and arm muscle as significant predictors, highlighting muscle's critical role in functionality.

Introduction. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health issue, particularly among the elderly, where metabolic disturbances accelerate renal decline. Diabetes mellitus contributes to kidney dysfunction through insulin resistance and altered glycemic control. This study investigates the relationship between diabetes-related parameters—fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, and kidney function, as measured by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in an elderly population. Methods. A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among 82 elderly residents of Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. Venous blood samples were collected to assess fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR. Kidney function was estimated using the CKD-EPI equation. Results. Age showed a significant negative correlation with eGFR (r = –0.266, p = 0.016), indicating age-related renal decline. HOMA-IR (r = 0.247, p = 0.025) and fasting insulin (r = 0.224, p = 0.043) demonstrated weak but significant positive correlations with eGFR. Conversely, fasting glucose (r = 0.055, p = 0.623) and HbA1c (r = 0.029, p = 0.795) had negligible, non-significant correlations with eGFR, suggesting limited predictive value for renal impairment. Insulin growth factor exhibited a weak, non-significant negative correlation (r = –0.104, p = 0.355). Conclusion. Age remains a key determinant of declining kidney function in the elderly. Insulin resistance markers showed mild but unexpected associations, warranting further longitudinal studies to confirm these findings and explore underlying mechanisms.
