Abstract

Cultural communication plays an important role in maintaining and preserving the values of traditional marine education. In this context, cultural communication serves as a bridge to maintain traditional values while adapting them to the dynamics of the times in the era of modern life, especially the Mandar sailors on Kerayaan Island who have long been known for their maritime traditions inherent in their daily lives. This study aims to analyze the impact of modernization on the traditional practices and maritime cultural identity of the Mandar community. In addition, this study also presents the fact that not only the Bugis tribe is known as reliable sailors in the region, but the Mandar tribe also has a long history as accomplished sailors. The method used in the research uses a qualitative approach with the type of ethnographic research. The data was collected through direct observation in the field and in-depth interviews with local communities. Social change analysis is used as a theoretical framework to understand the maritime cultural transformation that occurs. This research shows that the entry of modern technology has slowly but surely changed the way of life of the Mandar seafaring community. Various cultural symbols that exist today are more widely used for economic purposes only, no longer as a cultural identity that is upheld. This study provides a real picture of how this change at least gives hope, that there will be no total death of traditional sized, there will always be adjustment, imaging and re-creation of new traditional authorities. The ability to survive this tradition is at least quite justified because the emergence of tradition always presupposes the presence of a 'regime of representatives' who has the authority to interpret the symbols and sacred texts of tradition for the purpose of legitimacy of power through cultural communication. Abstract

The transformation of urban public spaces, particularly the afternoon stroll phenomenon in Blok M, reflects a shift in consumption patterns from utilitarian to symbolic among Millennials and Gen Z. This study analyzes impression management and social identity performativity of these generations through digital representations of symbolic consumption in Blok M on social media. Employing a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods, the research involves three informants selected based on diverse experiences related to the phenomenon. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, and analyzed using Goffman's dramaturgical theory and Tajfel-Turner's social identity theory. The findings indicate that content creation is guided by deliberate strategies, such as choosing aesthetic locations, coordinating outfits, and applying visual edits. Motivations for posting range from self-documentation to performing trendiness, with implications for social identity construction. Symbolic consumption is evident in the selection of dining spots and fashion that align with social media trends. The afternoon stroll becomes a lifestyle expression, where social media serves as an extended identity stage. Ultimately, the phenomenon reflects how consumption in urban spaces transforms into performative acts, reinforcing symbolic markers of class and shaping collective youth identity in digitally mediated environments.

Abstract

Character education plays a crucial role in restoring national identity and fostering the development of a new Indonesian society. This research employed a literature review approach, drawing data from articles published in Sinta and Scopus indexed journals. The content analysis method was used to analyze the collected data. The findings indicate that nurturing students' character is a complex and gradual process that demands continuous effort and thoughtful reflection. Ethical decisions made during this process must be translated into practical actions, enabling individuals to become practical and wise in their conduct. Transforming these actions into habits and shaping one's character or disposition takes considerable time. Character education necessitates the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including families, schools, and communities. Reconnecting the educational networks and relationships among these three environments is the first crucial step. The successful formation of educational values and character traits relies on the harmonious and continuous interaction between these three contexts. Recognizing this reality, it becomes evident that a holistic development of student personality requires a strong influence from family, school, and society

Abstract

This study was motivated by the researcher’s interest in the Teras Ngabaca community’s concern for the education of children in the Kalijaga neighborhood. The Teras Ngabaca community’s concern for education stems from the observation that many children are not yet proficient readers. Thus, Teras Ngabaca serves as a facilitator for the community, helping to improve their quality of life by providing a space for non-formal education. This study aims to identify how the Teras Ngabaca community works to improve children’s literacy and empower the community in Kalijaga Village, Cirebon City. The research method used in this study is qualitative, employing a case study approach. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, documentation, and a literature review. The results show that the Teras Ngabaca community’s strategy for improving children’s literacy begins with an introduction to the alphabet, followed by the “Buku Bacalah” series (volumes 1–3), and then proceeds to storybooks or folktales. Teras Ngabaca also employs a one-on-one teaching strategy.
