Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Word Chain Game as a strategy to enhance vocabulary mastery among students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Utilizing a library research method with a qualitative descriptive approach, this research synthesizes findings from five recent studies conducted between 2018 and 2023. The results consistently indicate that the Word Chain Game is an effective tool for improving students’ vocabulary acquisition, engagement, and confidence in using new words. Teachers have applied both oral and written forms of the game, integrating it into thematic lessons to make vocabulary learning more contextual and enjoyable. Despite its advantages, some challenges remain, including time constraints, classroom management in large groups, and the need for alignment with curriculum goals. Nevertheless, the benefits—such as increased vocabulary retention, higher test scores, and reduced student anxiety—demonstrate the game’s pedagogical value. This study concludes that the Word Chain Game is a practical and engaging method for teaching vocabulary in EFL settings and recommends its inclusion in language teaching practices, with consideration given to proper adaptation and teacher training. Future research could explore integrating the game with digital tools to further enhance its effectiveness.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and frequencies of linguistic errors found in descriptive texts written by tenth-grade students of SMKN 5 Palu. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to analyze students’ written work using the error taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), which categorizes errors into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Data were collected from 32 students who completed a writing task focused on descriptive text production. The findings reveal a total of 278 errors across all samples, with misformation errors being the most prevalent (36.69%), followed closely by omission errors (35.25%). Addition errors accounted for 15.47%, while misordering errors represented 12.59% of the total errors. These results indicate significant challenges among students in applying correct grammatical structures, vocabulary, and sentence organization when writing descriptive texts. The study underscores the need for more focused instruction in grammar, vocabulary development, and writing practice to help students improve their descriptive writing skills. Additionally, the findings suggest that error analysis can serve as an effective diagnostic tool for identifying students’ writing difficulties and guiding targeted pedagogical interventions. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the nature of writing errors in Indonesian EFL classrooms and highlights the importance of tailored instructional approaches to enhance students’ writing competence.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effect of the summarizing strategy on improving students’ reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 5 Palu. This research was based on an initial study that showed many students still struggled to understand texts, had difficulty finding main ideas and detailed information, and lacked vocabulary. The researcher used the summarizing strategy as a method to help improve students’ reading skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design. The population was tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Palu, involving classes X M5 and X M3, with 35 and 32 students respectively. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-tests and post-tests to measure students’ abilities before and after the treatment. The results of data analysis showed a significant improvement in reading comprehension. The average score of the experimental group increased from 68.85 to 79.06, while the average score of the control group slightly decreased from 69.33 to 67.52. Data analysis showed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.050, which means that Ha was accepted. It can be concluded that the summarizing strategy significantly improved students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to explore English teachers’ perceptions of the Merdeka Curriculum and to examine its perceived impact on students’ English proficiency at SMPN 2 Palu. Specifically, the study seeks to understand how the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum influences classroom practices, student engagement, and language learning outcomes, as well as to identify the challenges faced by teachers during its implementation. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research investigated the experiences of three English teachers who had implemented the curriculum for more than one year. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and triangulated with students’ midterm English examination scores to enhance the validity of the findings. The results indicate that teachers perceive the Merdeka Curriculum as beneficial in promoting student-centered learning, increasing students’ speaking confidence, and encouraging collaborative learning. Nevertheless, several challenges were reported, including limited technological resources and difficulties in shifting from traditional teaching approaches. To address these issues, teachers adopted strategies such as differentiated instruction and peer tutoring. This study provides valuable insights into the influence of curriculum reform on English language teaching and offers recommendations for improving teacher training, resource availability, and curriculum implementation strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze gender equality in child custody rights (?a??nah) through Fazlur Rahman’s double movement hermeneutic framework. The research focuses on the relevance of Qur’anic and Prophetic texts regulating parental responsibilities, particularly QS Al-Baqarah: 233, QS At-Tahrim: 6, and several hadiths addressing custody arrangements. This study employs a qualitative library research design with a historical–contextual analytical approach. Through Rahman's hermeneutics, the research re-evaluates classical Islamic legal formulations that often prioritize mothers in custody decisions without considering contemporary social transformations. The findings reveal that sociocultural contexts and patriarchal structures of early Muslim societies significantly influenced classical custody rulings. Therefore, modern custody decisions should emphasize child welfare, parental capability, psychological stability, and shared responsibility rather than gender-based assumptions. The study concludes that Islam fundamentally offers equal opportunities for both parents to assume childcare responsibilities. Accordingly, custody arrangements must prioritize the child's best interests and align with the moral principles of justice, compassion, and cooperation embedded in Islamic teachings. This hermeneutic reinterpretation highlights the necessity of contextual legal reasoning to ensure gender-balanced and child-centered custody practices.

Abstract

Introduction: The rapid growth of population and economic activity has exacerbated waste management challenges in Indonesia, including in West Aceh Regency. The imbalance between waste generation and the capacity of existing management systems has led to waste accumulation in various locations, particularly in densely populated areas. This study aims to examine the role of the Environmental Agency (DLH) in addressing waste congestionand to identify the supporting and constraining factors that influence the implementation of waste management policies in West Aceh Regency. A qualitative descriptive design with a phenomenological approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences and perceptions of waste management stakeholders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document review using purposive sampling, involving DLH officials, sanitation workers, and community members. Data analysis was conducted through iterative processes of reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings indicate that the West Aceh DLH plays a strategic role in waste management through the implementation of a controlled landfill system, community education on waste segregation, and strengthened cross- sectoral collaboration such as waste bank initiatives and communal clean-up activities. However, policy effectiveness remains constrained by limitedfacilities and infrastructure, insufficient human resources, and low community participation in fee payment and waste sorting practices. In conclusion, successful waste management in West Aceh requires greater synergy among institutional capacity, regulatory support, and community-based social awareness to ensure sustainable waste governance.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of Google Docs collaboration in improving descriptive text writing skills among eleventh-grade students at SMA Lab School Untad Palu. The research was conducted because many students faced challenges in writing descriptive text, particularly in mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, spelling), organization (logical structure and coherence), and content (idea development and relevance). A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design was employed. The sample consisted of two groups: the experimental group (n = 30), which was taught using Google Docs collaboration, and the control group (n = 29), which received conventional writing instruction. Students' writing skills were assessed using an analytic scoring rubric adapted from Oshima and Hogue (2006), focusing on three components: mechanics (5 points), organization (35 points), and content (20 points), totaling 60 points, converted to a 100-point scale. The descriptive statistics showed that the experimental group achieved notable improvement, with the mean score increasing from 43.67 in the pre-test to 83.43 in the post-test, whereas the control group showed minimal change from 28.48 to 79.31. The Mann-Whitney U test confirmed a significant difference between the groups, indicated by an Asymp. Sig. value of 0.000 < 0.05. These findings demonstrate that Google Docs collaboration helps students provide real-time feedback, revise their work collaboratively, and organize ideas more effectively, resulting in improved writing performance in mechanics, organization, and content. Therefore, Google Docs is considered and effective digital tool for enhancing descriptive writing skills and is recommended for use in English writing classrooms aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum.
