Abstract

Introduction: The rapid growth of population and economic activity has exacerbated waste management challenges in Indonesia, including in West Aceh Regency. The imbalance between waste generation and the capacity of existing management systems has led to waste accumulation in various locations, particularly in densely populated areas. This study aims to examine the role of the Environmental Agency (DLH) in addressing waste congestionand to identify the supporting and constraining factors that influence the implementation of waste management policies in West Aceh Regency. A qualitative descriptive design with a phenomenological approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences and perceptions of waste management stakeholders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews,field observations, and document review using purposive sampling, involving DLH officials, sanitation workers, and community members. Data analysis was conducted through iterative processes of reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings indicate that the West Aceh DLH plays a strategic role in waste management through the implementation of a controlled landfill system, community education on waste segregation, and strengthened cross- sectoral collaboration such as waste bank initiatives and communal clean-up activities. However, policy effectiveness remains constrained by limitedfacilities and infrastructure, insufficient human resources, and low community participation in fee payment and waste sorting practices. In conclusion, successful waste management in West Aceh requires greater synergy among institutional capacity, regulatory support, and community-based social awareness to ensure sustainable waste governance.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of Google Docs collaboration in improving descriptive text writing skills among eleventh-grade students at SMA Lab School Untad Palu. The research was conducted because many students faced challenges in writing descriptive text, particularly in mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, spelling), organization (logical structure and coherence), and content (idea development and relevance). A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design was employed. The sample consisted of two groups: the experimental group (n = 30), which was taught using Google Docs collaboration, and the control group (n = 29), which received conventional writing instruction. Students' writing skills were assessed using an analytic scoring rubric adapted from Oshima and Hogue (2006), focusing on three components: mechanics (5 points), organization (35 points), and content (20 points), totaling 60 points, converted to a 100-point scale. The descriptive statistics showed that the experimental group achieved notable improvement, with the mean score increasing from 43.67 in the pre-test to 83.43 in the post-test, whereas the control group showed minimal change from 28.48 to 79.31. The Mann-Whitney U test confirmed a significant difference between the groups, indicated by an Asymp. Sig. value of 0.000 < 0.05. These findings demonstrate that Google Docs collaboration helps students provide real-time feedback, revise their work collaboratively, and organize ideas more effectively, resulting in improved writing performance in mechanics, organization, and content. Therefore, Google Docs is considered and effective digital tool for enhancing descriptive writing skills and is recommended for use in English writing classrooms aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, academic writing remains a challenging skill for students, particularly in evaluating writing quality and monitoring learning progress. To address this issue, self-assessment and peer-assessment have been implemented as formative assessment strategies in writing instruction. This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of self- and peer-assessment in academic writing courses. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 18 Likert-scale items, administered to 100 third-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages. The findings revealed that most students held positive perceptions of self- and peer-assessment. These strategies were perceived as helpful in identifying strengths and weaknesses, enhancing awareness of the writing process, and improving writing quality. However, a few students expressed neutral perceptions, indicating a need for clearer guidelines and a more structured implementation. Overall, the results suggest that self-assessment and peer-assessment are effective approaches for developing EFL students’ academic writing skills.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of the Pertukaran Mahasiswa Merdeka (PMM) 4 Program at Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) Bali. The research aims to explore how participants perceive the academic, cultural, and personal dimensions of their experience during the exchange, including the benefits, challenges, and transformative impacts encountered throughout the program. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with four PMM 4 alumni from various Indonesian universities. The findings reveal that students hold predominantly positive perceptions of the program. Academically, PMM 4 enriched their learning experiences through exposure to diverse teaching methods, interdisciplinary courses, and active classroom engagement, which enhanced critical thinking and communication skills. Culturally, the program fostered intercultural awareness and appreciation of Indonesia’s pluralism, enabling participants to develop tolerance and empathy through direct immersion in Balinese traditions. Personally, students reported notable growth in confidence, adaptability, and independence while navigating new academic and social environments. However, several challenges were also identified, including differences in teaching styles, limited coordination between host and home institutions, and workload intensity. Despite these issues, PMM 4 was perceived as a holistic learning platform that integrates academic development with cultural and personal growth, effectively preparing students to engage in a globalized educational context. The study suggests that stronger institutional collaboration, improved mentoring systems, and balanced program design will further enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of PMM in the future.

Abstract

Descriptions of the blessings of paradise are widely mentioned in the Qur’an in various forms, yet they are commonly understood merely as eschatological rewards in the hereafter. However, upon deeper examination, these descriptions are not only informative, but also contain moral and spiritual values that can be reflected as a foundation for happiness in worldly life. This study aims to identify Qur’anic verses that depict the blessings of paradise and explain how these descriptions can be reflected as a Qur’anic concept of happiness for human life in the world. This research employs a qualitative method through library research by examining tafsir works and relevant literature, collecting verses related to paradise, analyzing their meanings, and formulating the characteristics of paradise’s blessings—both material and spiritual. The findings reveal that the blessings of paradise are not only eschatological rewards, but also contain moral and spiritual messages that may serve as a guide for achieving true happiness in the world. Thus, the Qur’anic portrayal of paradise can be understood as an ideal model of happiness based on faith, inner peace, and noble character.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding and describing about the affixation process of Verbs in Bajo Language, and the finding similarities and differences of verbs in English and Bajo language. This research was classified as a descriptive qualitative study. The techniques of data collection used in this research were interview and study document. The data were analyzed by using contrastive analysis. The result of the research showed that most of verbs in Bajo language changed based on meaning. The change on meaning could be formed from affixation process. Affixation process of verbs in Bajo language there is prefix process, suffix process, simulfix process, and confix process. While affixation process of verbs in English, there is prefix process, suffix process and confix process. The similarities of affixation process of verbs in English and Bajo language are both have the prefix process, suffix process, confix process in the morphological process. Difference was affixation process of verbs is in English did not have simulfix process of affixation process.

Abstract

This study examines speech anxiety among sixth-semester English Education students at Tadulako University, highlighting the ongoing challenges that hinder students' ability to communicate confidently despite having taken various speaking courses. This study aims to identify the main factors contributing to speaking anxiety and analyze the coping strategies used by students to overcome these psychological barriers in the classroom context. Using a mixed-methods design that sequentially combined qualitative and quantitative methods, this study first collected quantitative data through a questionnaire administered to sixth-semester students to measure anxiety levels and identify contributing factors, followed by semi-structured interviews with selected participants to gain deeper insights into their personal experiences and management strategies. Findings indicate that speaking anxiety primarily stems from two interrelated domains: psychological factors, including fear of negative evaluation, lack of confidence, and perfectionism; and linguistic factors, such as limited vocabulary, grammatical uncertainty, and pronunciation difficulties. Students reported using various coping mechanisms, ranging from thorough preparation and collaboration with peers to relaxation techniques and talking. This study emphasizes that speaking anxiety is not merely temporary nervousness, but rather a complex phenomenon that affects student participation in class, learning motivation, and their perception of themselves as future English language educators. This highlights the need for a more supportive learning environment and targeted interventions to address the emotional and linguistic dimensions of this challenge.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan lingkungan hijau dan berkelanjutan di Desa Pasanggrahan melalui peningkatan kesadaran dan partisipasi aktif masyarakat. Permasalahan utama yang dihadapi desa adalah rendahnya pemahaman masyarakat terhadap pentingnya pengelolaan lingkungan, pemanfaatan ruang hijau, serta penerapan perilaku ramah lingkungan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan upaya edukatif dan pendampingan yang berkelanjutan guna mendorong perubahan sikap dan perilaku masyarakat. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan partisipatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi lapangan, wawancara dengan perangkat desa dan masyarakat, diskusi kelompok terarah, serta dokumentasi kegiatan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif untuk menggambarkan proses pelaksanaan dan hasil kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman dan kepedulian masyarakat terhadap lingkungan hijau dan berkelanjutan. Masyarakat mulai terlibat aktif dalam kegiatan lingkungan, seperti pengelolaan kebersihan, pemanfaatan lahan pekarangan, serta partisipasi dalam program-program lingkungan yang dilaksanakan. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga memperkuat kolaborasi antara tim pengabdian, perangkat desa, dan masyarakat dalam upaya menciptakan lingkungan desa yang bersih, sehat, dan berkelanjutan. Kesimpulan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa program pengembangan lingkungan hijau dan berkelanjutan di Desa Pasanggrahan berhasil mencapai tujuan yang telah ditetapkan. Pendekatan partisipatif dan metode kualitatif deskriptif terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kesadaran serta mendorong peran aktif masyarakat. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat menjadi dasar bagi pengembangan program lingkungan berkelanjutan di masa mendatang.

Abstract

Fermentasi merupakan tahap krusial dalam proses pascapanen kopi yang menentukan mutu kimia dan sensorik biji kopi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi efektivitas Lactobacillus fermentum pada fermentasi kopi Arabika menggunakan media rongga batang bambu terhadap perubahan kadar kafein, dan aktivitas antioksidan. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan empat perlakuan fermentasi, yaitu P0 (kontrol tanpa inokulasi), P1 (24 jam), P2 (48 jam), dan P3 (72 jam) dengan tiga ulangan. Parameter yang diamati meliputi pH fermentasi, kadar kafein, aktivitas antioksidan metode DPPH. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fermentasi dengan Lactobacillus fermentum menurunkan pH hingga 4,2, memodifikasi kadar kafein, dan menurunkan aktivitas antioksidan seiring bertambahnya lama fermentasi yang ditunjukkan pada perlakuan P3 72 jam. Media rongga batang bambu sebagai wadah fermentasi berperan sebagai mikrohabitat alami yang mendukung fermentasi terkendali dan pembentukan kompleksitas cita rasa. Kombinasi Lactobacillus fermentum dan bambu berpotensi menjadi inovasi ramah lingkungan untuk peningkatan mutu kopi specialty Indonesia. Fermentation is a crucial stage in the post-harvest process of coffee that determines the chemical and sensory quality of coffee beans. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus fermentum in Arabica coffee fermentation using bamboo stem cavity media on changes in caffeine levels and antioxidant activity. The study used a completely randomized design with four fermentation treatments, namely P0 (control without inoculation), P1 (24 hours), P2 (48 hours), and P3 (72 hours) with three replications. The parameters observed included fermentation pH, caffeine levels, and antioxidant activity using the DPPH method. The results showed that fermentation with Lactobacillus fermentum reduced the pH to 4.2, modified caffeine levels, and decreased antioxidant activity as the fermentation time increased, as shown in the P3 72-hour treatment. The bamboo stem cavity media as a fermentation container acts as a natural microhabitat that supports controlled fermentation and the formation of flavor complexity. The combination of Lactobacillus fermentum and bamboo has the potential to be an environmentally friendly innovation for improving the quality of Indonesian specialty coffee.

Abstract

Retelling story is widely used as a technique to support students’ speaking development in English language classrooms. This study aims to describe how the retelling story technique is implemented in speaking classes and to examine its effects on students’ speaking skills at different academic levels. This study employed a qualitative library research design by analyzing five previous research studies that investigated the use of retelling story in teaching speaking skills. The selected studies were conducted at different educational levels and were reviewed to identify instructional procedures, supporting media, and reported learning outcomes. The results of the analysis show that all five studies applied the retelling story technique through three main stages: pre-retelling activities, during-retelling activities, and post-retelling activities. These stages were consistently referred to as before, during, and after retelling activities. The implementation of the technique was often supported by additional media and methods, such as YouTube videos, picture series, and guided questions, to help students understand and retell stories more effectively. Furthermore, the findings indicate that students at different academic levels showed improvement in their speaking skills after the application of the retelling story technique. Students became more active in classroom interaction and demonstrated increased confidence in expressing ideas orally. The reviewed studies also reported that students were more motivated and independent when retelling stories. Overall, the findings suggest that the retelling story technique has a positive effect on students’ speaking skills and can be considered an effective strategy for teaching speaking in EFL classrooms.
