Abstract

In this study, tefrosin (1), a known phenolic compound, was successfully isolated and identified from the seed extract of Tephrosia vogelii. The structure of this compound was determined based on 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the isolated compound was transformed using 0.5 equivalent of selectfluor™ in acetonitrile solvent at 100 oC for 3 hours. The reaction product, namely dehydrotephrosine (2), is new reaction product from selectfluor™ reagent as a catalyst in tertiary alcohol dehydration in aromatic group. This finding highlights the effectiveness of selectfluor™ as a catalyst in dehydration reactions, demonstrating its potential to introduce new chemical properties to compounds. The study underscores the versatility of selectfluor™ and its ability to facilitate the generation of valuable derivatives from phenolic compounds. These results provide insights into the reactivity of tefrosin and offer a new approach for chemical transformations involving phenolic substrates.

Abstract

Methylene blue is a synthetic dye known to be harmful to aquatic environments. Therefore, efforts are needed to minimize methylene blue waste. This study focuses on degrading methylene blue through photocatalysis, a method chosen for its affordability and ease of use. The photocatalyst used is hydroxyapatite (HAp) derived from limestone (CaCO3) doped with zinc ions (Zn2+). This combination enhances the efficiency of breaking down dye molecules in liquid waste. The photocatalytic performance was tested under three variations: solution concentration, contact time, and pH, using an 8-watt UV lamp for specified durations. Solution absorbance was measured using a Shimadzu 1800 UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Optimal conditions for methylene blue photodegradation by Zn-doped HAp were achieved at 67.2% efficiency for 5 ppm concentration, 16.125% for 120 minutes of irradiation, and 34.86% at pH 7. Additionally, the study included an analysis of adsorption isotherm models for concentration variation and kinetic adsorption analysis for time variation. The Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherm models were found to be most suitable with an R2 = 1. The photodegradation kinetics model followed pseudo second-order kinetics with an R2 = 0.990.

Abstract

Abstract

Blue swimming crab is a fishery product with high economic value in Indonesia. Betahwalang Village, Demak, is one of the crab fisheries locations in the province of Central Java. High selling prices and processing industry demand encourages fishing activities. One issue brought on by increased fishing activity is the smaller crab size. It will impact the crab fishing industry in Betahwalang. The majority of the fisherman in Betahwalang Village catch crabs using arad nets, simple gill nets, and traps. This study aims to evaluate the size of crab catch results on fishing gear used by fishermen and recommend proper fishing gear for catching crabs. This research was conducted in April 2019. The catch size of crab was the primary data collected for this study, also with data on fishing grounds, methods, and characteristics of fishing gear. Data were collected by observation, interviews, and measurements of fishing gear and the carapace width of the crab. The results of data collection and processing were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the highest proportion of legal size crabs (carapace width ≥10 cm) was caught in traps, while the proportion of unlegal size crabs caught was mostly in bottom gillnets and mini trawl.
