Abstract

A misconception is one of the learning obstacles that often occurs in biology class. This study aims to construct a diagnostic instrument to detect misconceptions of biological concepts during the first semester of senior high school and test the quality of the developed instrument. The instrument development model used was a modification of the Oriondo, Dallo-Antonio, and Azwar models. The construction begins with planning the measuring domain and preparing the blueprint for the test instrument. The processes were followed by an instrument seminar, peer review, expert judgment validation, and trying out the test on 885 students. In addition, an unstructured interview with the teachers determines the feasibility of the test instrument. The test content validity according to the Aiken formula is 0.85; the items have different levels of difficulty and good discriminating power; the number of 62 items fits the partial credit model. The reliability of the test is shown by a Kappa coefficient of 0.47. Thus, the test instrument proved to be valid and reliable. Thirteen teachers from eleven schools stated that the test is worthy of use in learning. For the school level, the instrument meets the criteria of a good test instrument.

Abstract

Digital transformation in education has led to the development of more interactive and engaging learning methods. One strategy gaining momentum is digital storytelling, which delivers content through visual and narrative-based technologies. This article qualitatively examines digital storytelling’s role in enhancing learning effectiveness and engagement from 2020 to 2025, based on recent research findings. Through a literature review approach, it explores the use of digital media such as flipbooks, animated videos, and web-based storytelling tools. These media have been shown to improve students’ reading interest, idea articulation, conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and media literacy in elementary education. The findings suggest that combining technology with storytelling creates a more meaningful, multimodal learning experience aligned with the demands of 21st-century education. Abstract

The development of technology and science demands that education continues to innovate in enhancing students' critical thinking skills and scientific attitudes. One way to achieve this, specifically in physics education, is by developing practical modules that utilize experimental activities to foster critical thinking skills and scientific attitudes. This study aims to (1) develop a practical module on the sound absorption coefficient, (2) test the module's validity, (3) evaluate the practicality of the module in learning, and (4) assess the effectiveness of the module in improving students' critical thinking skills and scientific attitudes. This research employs an R&D approach, utilizing the 4D procedure: define, design, develop, and disseminate. Product trials were conducted using a pretest-posttest control group design. The results show that the developed practical module on the sound absorption coefficient has specific characteristics that integrate the measurement of physical parameters for technologies related to sound-absorbing materials, as well as excellent material and media validity, making it suitable for use and possessing a high level of practicality based on feedback from teachers and students. The module's readability test showed high ease for students in reading the content presented. Additionally, the module's effectiveness is demonstrated by significant improvements in critical thinking skills, with an N-gain of 0.85, and the achievement of scientific attitudes in students after using the practical module, with 79.54% of aspects achieved, which is higher compared to the group using conventional learning modules.

Abstract

Science materials at the junior high school level often pose challenges for students, particularly in understanding abstract concepts and differentiating between topics such as temperature, heat, and expansion. These difficulties contribute to low levels of conceptual understanding and limited student creativity. This study aims to develop and evaluate gamification-based interactive science media integrated with the discovery learning model to enhance students’ conceptual understanding and creativity. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model and utilized a quasi-experimental design. The participants included 64 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 41 Semarang, divided into experimental (class VIIB) and control (class VIIE) groups. The validity assessment yielded high scores for both media (0.90) and material content (0.94). Practicality evaluations demonstrated strong approval from both students (82.97%) and teachers (88.33%). Effectiveness analysis revealed a significant increase in conceptual understanding (N-gain: 0.71, high category) and creativity (N-gain: 0.62, medium category) in the experimental group, while the control group showed lower gains (N-gain: 0.44 and 0.29, respectively). These results indicate that gamified interactive media combined with the discovery learning model is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding and creativity. This study highlights the potential of integrating gamification into interactive learning environments to foster deeper engagement and improved learning outcomes in science education at the junior high school level. The findings suggest that such innovative approaches can be widely adopted to support active learning and creativity development among students.
