Abstract

Misconceptions are understandings that contradict scientific concepts. This study aims to identify misconceptions among 11th-grade students in Surabaya regarding the Plantae classification based on the results of the four-tier diagnostic test (KlasPlant-4T). This study is a descriptive survey to objectively describe misconceptions and level of misconceptions. The research sample consisted of 115 11th-grade students from 9 high schools in Surabaya who were selected using simple random sampling technique. The instrument used was KlasPlant-4T, consisting of 10 questions Plantae classification, arranged in four levels. The research stages included the preparation and implementation of the KlasPlant-4T. The KlasPlant-4T test resulted in validity score of 90% (highly valid) and Cronbach alpha reliability score of 0.69 (reliable). Data analysis used simple statistics, including category percentages and levels of misconception. The results of this study showed that students’ conceptual profiles consisted of the conceptual understanding (23%), partial understanding (34%), misconceptions (24%), and not understanding (19%). The levels of misconception were low (70%), moderate (23%), and high (7%). The misconceptions found included the classification of Gnetum gnemon (38%), rules for writing scientific nomenclature (29%), and characteristics of members of the Plantae Kingdom (13%). Thus, KlasPlant-4T tests can be recommended to help teachers in designing the learning that minimizes misconceptions in Plantae classification.

Abstract

The 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results depict a significant decline in the academic performance of Indonesian 15-year-olds in mathematics, reading, and science. The results position Indonesia's scores among the lowest since the country first participation in 2001. This editorial examines the implications of these results, drawing on data presented in PISA 2022, which illustrate the downward trend in performance and the widening gap between different socioeconomic groups. It argues for urgent educational reforms aimed at overhauling the current curricular frameworks, enhancing teacher training, and ensuring equitable educational opportunities. Specific strategies to achieve these goals include implementing the Merdeka Curriculum to promote student-centered learning, integrating educational neuroscience-based interventions to address learning disabilities, and leveraging intelligent tutoring systems and social media for collaborative learning. Additionally, developing localized assessments like the Indonesian Madrasah Competency Assessment and the Assessment of Indonesian Student Competence ensures alignment with international standards while addressing local needs. Through a comparative analysis with OECD averages and higher-performing nations, this piece highlights the necessity for Indonesia to adopt international best practices while tailoring them to local contexts. The ultimate goal is to equip Indonesian students with the skills necessary to meet both current and future challenges, thus improving their outcomes in subsequent PISA assessments and fostering national development. This article calls on policymakers, educational leaders, and stakeholders to engage in a concerted effort to address these educational deficiencies with the seriousness they deserve.

Abstract

This study profiled digital health literacy (DHL) among senior high school students in virus-focused biology learning and examined whether total DHL scores differed by gender. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted with 64 Grade 12 students from two classes at a public senior high school in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Participants were selected through convenience sampling. DHL was measured using an Indonesian adaptation of the Digital Health Literacy Instrument. The instrument comprised 12 items across four dimensions—Information Searching, Self-Generated Content, Evaluating Reliability, and Determining Relevance—rated on a five-point Likert scale. The overall internal consistency of the adapted instrument in the main sample was α = 0.659. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, an independent-samples t-test, effect-size estimation, and a Mann–Whitney U sensitivity analysis. Based on the study-specific descriptive thresholds, students’ overall DHL was predominantly classified as problematic (M = 41.20, SD = 6.69): 17.19% were classified as inadequate, 70.31% as problematic, and 12.50% as sufficient. Information Searching had the highest mean score, whereas Evaluating Reliability had the lowest. No statistically significant difference was found between male and female students, t(62) = 0.051, p = 0.959, with a negligible effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.013). These findings indicate that students perceived greater ease in locating digital health information than in evaluating its credibility and evidentiary quality. Virus-focused biology instruction should therefore provide explicit opportunities for source evaluation, cross-source verification, and evidence-based interpretation of digital health information.

Abstract

Science process skills (SPS) are central to scientific inquiry, yet instruments designed to assess SPS-related constructs require empirical evidence that their measurement structure corresponds to their intended interpretation. In Indonesia, SPS instruments have often emphasized expert-based content validation, while evidence concerning the latent structure of self-reported SPS-related behaviors remains limited. This study developed and psychometrically evaluated a two-dimensional self-report instrument assessing senior high school students’ reported engagement in behaviors associated with Basic Science Process Skills (BSPS) and Integrated Science Process Skills (ISPS). A total of 830 tenth-grade students from East Java, Indonesia, were allocated to three independent samples: preliminary analysis (n = 166), exploratory factor analysis (EFA; n = 339), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; n = 325). The EFA data were suitable for factor analysis (KMO = 0.964; Bartlett’s χ²(595) = 7,345.301, p < .001). Parallel analysis, eigenvalue examination, scree-plot inspection, and theoretical interpretability supported a two-factor solution. Seven items were removed, yielding a 28-item instrument that explained 49.8% of the total variance. Because Mardia’s tests indicated multivariate nonnormality, CFA was estimated using robust maximum likelihood. The correlated two-factor model demonstrated acceptable fit, χ²(349) = 768.321, p < .001, CFI = 0.925, TLI = 0.919, RMSEA = 0.061, 90% CI [0.055, 0.067], and SRMR = 0.045. AVE values were 0.510 for BSPS and 0.540 for ISPS, while HTMT was 0.805. Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega ranged from 0.928 to 0.962, with composite reliability ranging from 0.979 to 0.993. The findings support two closely related yet empirically distinguishable dimensions of self-reported SPS-related behavior. The instrument should therefore be interpreted as assessing reported behavioral engagement rather than demonstrated SPS competence. Generalization beyond comparable student populations should remain cautious because participants were recruited purposively from East Java.

Abstract

[Title: The 21st Century Skills Integration on Character Education]. Various cases carried out by teenagers require serious handling with a variety of strategies, including through character education. Character education does not mean reducing or replacing "traditional" educational goals such as the accumulation of knowledge and the development of intellectual and practical abilities. Character education is carried out integrated into every subject and requires the support of all parties: parents, teachers, schools, education staff, the daily community of students and of course the government. The development of character can be understood in a model, including the Neo-Aristotelian Model. Good character education will not only affect well being and good character, but also good academic ability. Character education is not something new, and it is not separated from the 21st-century skill-building needed today.
