Abstract

The last two decades show how artefacts and heritage that have become museum collections have experienced the development of meaning. Along with that, disruption era, a period filled with changes caused by new innovations, which results in instability, during the last decade has affected various lines of life including museums. Meanwhile, the study on disruptive impacts on museums is considered rare, and specific studies in Indonesia, mainly in Jakarta, have not been found. This paper discusses the change of visitors’ point of view on collection and the strategy to invite the public so that they are willing to visit museums during this time. The methods used in this research are literature studies, observation, and predictive analysis by applying the theory of disruptive innovation (King and Baatartogtokh 2015). It is concluded that museums should display real collection as well as intangible culture, try to present real natural environment, increase community members’ participation, and keep themselves up-to-date with socio-cultural changes in the society.

Archaeological remains can be used as data to reconstruct the culture of the past. At the top of Mount Tilu, Kuningan, stands a menhir decorated with reliefs. The indigenous community which once cared for this site has long vanished. This paper is the result of a research applying archaeological method and semiotic interpretation to reconstruct the life of this long-dead indigenous community. The reliefs on the menhir tell of the beliefs of this ancient which venerated the dragon. They considered this creature as the beginning of life on the earth. This dragon is different from its counterparts known in other parts of the world.

Abstract

The research on civilization in Indonesia has been conducted since 1800s. Around 1970s, there was theory regarding Out of Africa stating that ancient human was from Africa then spread to all over places in the world. Besides, around 1980s there was opinion theory regarding Out of Taiwan which stated that modern human culture spread from Taiwan to South East Asia. Different research findings then are considered anomaly and barely accepted as science. Revolution could occur when the new different evidences from previous science are found. The findings of archaeology from last ten years in Indonesia have some potential to trigger scientific revolution.

Abstract

Many archaeological researches have been conducted in Serang City, Banten Province for decades so that a significant amount of knowledge has been produced. The Public Archaeology approach, especially museums and cultural resource management, has also been applied. However, these efforts have not been maximized resulting in several problems. Particularly, since 2020, COVID-19 pandemic has affected various fields and sectors, including the cultural sectors related to the preservation and management of cultural heritage in Serang City. The efforts to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 have been carried out by implementing health protocols and large-scale social restriction policies including on the sites and museums. The pandemic along with its uncertainty opens the potential for some problems to increasingly influence the social and political aspects; for instance, the income of the local community has decreased. Thus, a new approach known as Rediscovering Archaeology is needed to reduce the existing problems. This approach is carried out by conducting a research followed by a community service involving multidisciplinary knowledge and several related parties or Penta Helix. The methods include field observation, interviews, and ongoing mentoring. This approach has been shown to reduce the potential social and political tensions in society. This approach also convinces related parties that archaeological heritage can be a cultural capital in dealing with the pandemic and is expected to generate prosperity for the community in the future.

Abstract

Research on Prehistoric Era, especially megalithic culture, has been conducted many times in Indonesia. Generally, the results of the study show that megalithic culture produces structures and buildings of large stones. These remains are often found in mountains or hills. However, the results of the research that the author did in Sukabumi, West Java show different outcome. The author conducted a survey at Pelabuhan Ratu Site and Ciletuh Site. These two sites can be said as newly discovered sites. The method used was an archaeological survey by visiting the site and carefully observing the structure and megalithic buildings on both sites. The results of the study found statues and stepped pyramid in the coastal area. The two sites are located near the sea, so it is more appropriate if we consider that the community developed maritime cultural landscape. Then, the two sites are close to the source of gold. The factor of proximity to valuable mineral resources seems to be a consideration of this site selection. Easy access to interact with the community from other sites, even from other islands, may also be a consideration of location selection.

Abstract

A museum plays a central role in conserving cultural heritage. Hence, conserving museum collections is pivotal for preserving the values of the collection. The museum of National Awakening has a potential national collection that requires curative conservation due to its damaged condition, i.e., Sultan Thaha Robes. However, the conservation effort lacked written and visual documentation of the collection due to the collection's urgency, causing it difficult for conservators to access the conservation-related information. This paper presents a critical review of conservation stages performed on Sultan Thaha Robes while suggesting a complete, systematic conservation solution based on the theoretical collaboration of textile conservation experts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This article aims to describe the shifts and changes in the reception model of the Qur'an among the Bakumpai Dayak tribe in Central Kalimantan in the tradition of khatam al-Qur'an (batamat). Batamat is carried out in several important moments, namely when completing Al-Qur'an lessons for children, at weddings, tadarrus at the end of Ramadan, and at death ceremonies. This research employed a qualitative descriptive study of the living Qur'an through fieldwork. The phenomenological approach was used, with Qur'an reception theory as a basis for analysis. The results of the study indicated that in Bakumpai Dayak community, Batamat has an aesthetic function and a performative function.
