Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness and variability of STEM education implementation in Indonesian vocational (SMK) and senior secondary (SMA) schools. Given the growing emphasis on STEM to enhance critical 21st-century skills, understanding the consistency and influencing factors of its outcomes is essential. A meta-analysis was conducted, incorporating multiple studies on STEM education implementation. The analysis focused on effect size, heterogeneity, and the factors contributing to outcome variability. Data visualization techniques and statistical models were employed to assess consistency across studies. The analysis revealed a high degree of heterogeneity among the studies (I² = 82.604%), indicating substantial differences in research design, methods, and participant characteristics. Despite this variability, the combined effect size was significant (intercept estimate = 0.307, p 0.001), with a 95% confidence interval of 0.128–0.485. This confirms that the STEM approach consistently yields positive outcomes, particularly in fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. The findings suggest that despite contextual differences, STEM education provides meaningful benefits. However, variations in implementation—driven by factors such as teaching quality, resources, and institutional support—impact effectiveness. To reduce this disparity, policy integration is needed to support teacher training, industry collaboration, and resource allocation. A holistic, well-supported, and context-sensitive approach to STEM education is essential. Strengthening teacher competency, ensuring adequate facilities, and aligning with industry needs can enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of STEM initiatives in secondary education.

Abstract

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has been widely promoted as a student-centered approach that fosters critical thinking. However, evidence from individual studies often varies across educational levels and contexts. This study aimed to synthesize empirical findings through a meta-analysis to evaluate the overall effectiveness of PBL in enhancing learners’ critical thinking skills. A systematic search was conducted across academic databases, yielding 2,250 articles. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 studies were selected for analysis. Data were coded based on research design, educational level, and implementation characteristics. Statistical analyses were performed using both fixed-effect and random-effect models to estimate the pooled effect size. Publication bias was examined using Egger’s Test, Funnel Plot, and Rank Correlation Test. The meta-analysis indicated that PBL has a significant positive effect on critical thinking skills, with a pooled effect size of 1.134 (p 0.001) and a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.730 to 1.537. A high heterogeneity level was observed (I² = 95.047%), suggesting variations in study characteristics such as instructional methods, learner populations, and cultural contexts. Although Egger’s Test suggested possible publication bias, Funnel Plot and Rank Correlation Test results supported the overall robustness of the findings. This study provides strong evidence that PBL is an effective strategy for improving critical thinking across different educational levels. Successful implementation requires adequate institutional support, teacher training, and contextual adaptation. The findings highlight the importance of adopting PBL more broadly as a framework for 21st-century education.

Abstract

Inquiry-based learning (IBL) has been increasingly adopted in education to foster students’ conceptual understanding and critical thinking. However, existing research shows varying results regarding its effectiveness, ranging from significant positive effects to no impact. This study aims to systematically evaluate the impact of IBL on student learning outcomes through a meta-analytic approach. A meta-analysis was conducted on empirical studies published between 2020 and 2024. The study followed the PRISMA protocol, including three stages: identification, screening, and inclusion. A total of 21 relevant studies were selected and analyzed using JASP software to ensure accuracy in calculating effect sizes and interpreting findings. The meta-analysis revealed that inquiry-based learning has a small but significant overall effect on student learning outcomes (effect size: d = 0.444). The impact was particularly evident in science and mathematics education. Additionally, moderating variables such as educational level, instructional design, and student engagement were found to influence the effectiveness of IBL. While the overall effect size is modest, the findings confirm that IBL can positively contribute to student achievement. These results support the continued use and further development of inquiry-based approaches in modern educational contexts. The study provides evidence-based insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers seeking to optimize teaching strategies for 21st-century learning environments.

Abstract

Digital transformation has intensified the importance of digital entrepreneurship as a strategic pathway for university students. This study examines the effects of Coding Literacy and computational thinking on student Digital Entrepreneurial intentions, with coding self-efficacy serving as a mediating variable. A quantitative explanatory design was employed using survey data collected from 119 undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory coding course at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that Coding Literacy significantly influences coding self-efficacy (β = 0.414, p < 0.001) and Digital Entrepreneurial intentions (β = 0.474, p < 0.001). Computational thinking also shows a significant positive effect on coding self-efficacy (β = 0.340, p = 0.002), but does not exert a significant direct effect on Digital Entrepreneurial intentions (β = 0.074, p = 0.395). Furthermore, coding self-efficacy has a strong positive effect on Digital Entrepreneurial intentions (β = 0.313, p < 0.001). Mediation analysis reveals that coding self-efficacy partially mediates the relationship between Coding Literacy and Digital Entrepreneurial intentions (β = 0.130, p = 0.002), while fully mediating the relationship between computational thinking and Digital Entrepreneurial intentions (β = 0.107, p = 0.035). The model explains 49.3% of the variance in coding self-efficacy and 60.7% of the variance in Digital Entrepreneurial intentions. These findings highlight coding self-efficacy as a critical psychological mechanism that transforms computational competencies into Digital Entrepreneurial intentions, offering important implications for the design of coding-oriented entrepreneurship education in higher education. Keywords— Coding Literacy, computational thinking, coding self-efficacy, digital entrepreneurial intention, PLS-SEM
