Abstract

Water quality is a crucial factor in maintaining public health, particularly in rural areas that still rely on traditional water sources such as dug wells. In Bulu Bulu Village, Maros Regency, most residents use dug well water for their daily needs, without knowing whether the water quality meets health standards. This study aims to analyze the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality of dug well water and identify the relationship between water quality and the incidence of skin diseases in the community. This study used an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 15 randomly selected dug wells and 60 respondents who were active users of water from these wells. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess physical (color, odor, turbidity), chemical (pH, iron, nitrate), and microbiological (Escherichia coli) parameters. Data on skin diseases were collected through interviews, observations, and medical records from local health facilities. Data analysis used the Chi-square test to determine the relationship between water quality and the incidence of skin diseases. The results showed that most water samples contained E. coli contamination exceeding the threshold set by Minister of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017. 63% of respondents experienced skin disorders, primarily contact dermatitis and fungal infections. A significant association was found between the microbiological quality of dug well water and the risk of skin disease (p < 0.05). This study emphasizes the need for regular water quality monitoring and public education regarding environmental sanitation and safe water source management.

Abstract

Objective This study examines the determinants of the Ecological Footprint (EF) and tests the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis.Design/Methodology This study employs a dynamic panel approach through the Two-Step System Generalized Method of Moments (SYS-GMM) method in 61 developing countries during the period of 19922021.Results This study provides strong evidence in favor of the EKC hypothesis. Renewable energy consumption, human development index, financial development, and industrial sector contributions were found to reduce EF. Conversely, trade openness and urbanization significantly increase the EF. Countries with high political stability have higher EF values, suggesting that stability, in the absence of effective environmental governance, may lead to unsustainable economic expansion.Research limitations/implications The political stability variable in this study is measured using a dummy indicator, which provides a general overview but does not fully reflect institutional complexity. This study also emphasizes the importance of formulating integrated development policies, including strengthening green financing, environmentally friendly industrial reforms, and sustainable trade regulations.Novelty/Originality The primary contribution of this study lies in the integration of social, economic, and institutional dimensions into the EKC framework, as well as the emphasis on the role of the financial development and political stability in supporting the transition toward sustainable development in developing countries.

Abstract

Microtrichia perotitii DC belongs to the family Asteraceae (Compositeae) and it is an herb found in the West African countries. The herb has been used ethnomedicinally to treat children's rashes, burns, wounds, jaundice, rheumatism, diarrhea, and skin conditions. The n-hexane fraction of the ethanolic extract of the plant was investigated for the presence of secondary metabolites, characterisation as well as its antioxidant activity with a view to exploring other significant information that would be of benefit to scientific study. The n-hexane extract was subjected to partitioning, phytochemical screening using standard methods as well as spectroscopic characterizations using UV, FTIR and GC-MS analysis including antioxidant activity. The result of the phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, phenols, glycosides, steroids, terpenoids and flavonoids, but anthraquinones and phlobatannins were absent. The spectroscopy analysis showed a high degree of conjugation and it also  reveals the presence of  Hydroxyl (O-H), carbonyl (C=O) and methyl (C-H) groups, with the compound, Pentadecanoic acid, 14-methyl-, methyl ester, having  the highest abundance while the antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Nitric oxide (NO),radical scavenging assays exhibited antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 4.61mg/mL but less than ascorbic acid which has an IC50 value of 0.84mg/mL. The phytochemical compounds present in the plant could be responsible for its antioxidant property which suggests the use of the plant in the treatment of diseases induced by free radicals. In the light of the importance of this herb in local applications, the research was aimed at exploring the scientific evidences to support the local claims as well as improving information of the efficacy of the plant.

Abstract

Abstract

The community of West Rappang Village relies heavily on agricultural yields, particularly rice cultivation. Consequently, pest attacks, especially by rats (Rattus argentiventer), pose a serious threat to food security and farmers' welfare. Conventional control practices, such as the use of rodenticides, have negative impacts on both the environment and human health, and may contribute to pest resistance. The objective of this community service activity is to enhance farmers’ understanding and skills in implementing environmentally friendly Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, while also promoting behavioral change toward sustainable agricultural practices. The methodology employed includes lectures and interactive group discussions conducted in collaboration with farmer partners in West Rappang Village, facilitated by the Unsulbar Farming Club (UFC). The training materials cover ecological rat control techniques, such as the use of bamboo traps, land sanitation, synchronized planting, and the utilization of owls as natural predators. Based on questionnaire results, there was a significant increase in farmers’ knowledge: 100% understood the health risks posed by rat infestations, 88% were aware of pest control information sources, and 100% recognized the importance of environmental cleanliness. This activity demonstrates that participatory and educational approaches can foster collective awareness and empower farmers as agents of change in implementing pest control techniques against rat attacks. The implication of this initiative is the development of a more resilient and sustainable agricultural system, which not only boosts productivity but also improves the overall quality of life for the village community.

Abstract

The quality of fresh water found in several areas varies greatly depending on the geographical conditions of the region, in mountainous areas most of it contains limestone, in lowland or coastal areas generally the total dissolved solids (TDS) exceeds 500 mg/l while according to Minister of Health Decree no. : 416 of 1990 the maximum limit for TDS in clean water is 500 mg/l so this can be a health problem for residents living in the surrounding area. The aim is to determine the relationship between the provision of clean water facilities and the incidence of diarrhea in the work area of the Health Center. This type of research is analytical observational research, namely to determine the factors related to the provision of clean water and the incidence of diarrhea in the Puskesmas Work Area. Based on the results of the analysis using the chi-square formula, it was found that the value of P = 0.000 < α = 0.05 so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between water quality conditions from a physical aspect and the incidence of diarrhea in the work area of the Health Center. The conclusion is that there is a relationship between the physical quality of water and the incidence of diarrhea in the work area of the Health Center.
