Abstract

Lightly reinforced concrete columns and soft storey configurations are prevalent in many old buildings in regions of lower seismicity. This type of structure is believed to have a very low lateral load and drift capacity from a conventional design perspective. Furthermore, the application of design standards in low and moderate seismic regions such as Australia, results in most of the lightly reinforced structures being deemed unsafe in an earthquake. Therefore, an earthquake damage reconnaissance, experimental field test, and laboratory study of non ductile columns has been undertaken to examine the drift capacity and failure mechanism of such columns. Firstly, a field reconnaissance was conducted in China after the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, particularly in regions with similar design intensity MMI VI to VIII experienced in Australia. A comparison between the Wenchuan Earthquake and the characteristics of design earthquakes in Australia was made to provide insight for the development of future design standards and for the assessment of existing buildings in Australia. A unique experimental field testing of a precast soft storey building in Carlton Melbourne was then undertaken. Four tests were conducted to measure the drift capacity and loaddeflection behaviour of such buildings. The experimental results together with a comparison with theoretical predictions showed that the precast columns with weak connection had significant displacement capacity controlled by the column rocking irrespective of strength degradation. Lastly, a laboratory research project has been undertaken to investigate the collapse behaviour of insitu lightly reinforced concrete columns. The effect of variation of axial load ratio and longitudinal reinforcement ratio on flexural, yield penetration, and shear displacement as components of the drift capacity were observed. Interesting outcomes showed that lightly reinforced concrete columns were able to sustain lateral drift considerably greater than the code recommendations, whilst the present shear capacity predictions tended to overestimate the nominal shear strength of the column.

Abstract

Perkembangan ekonomi menyebabkan meningkatnya arus tranportasi yang menuntut peningkatan sarana dan prasarana tranportasi. Salah satu sarana transportasi yang secara langsung harus ditingkatkan dengan adanya peningkatan arus transportasi adalah jembatan. Pada jaman yang semakin modern ini jembatan dibangun tidak hanya ditingkatkan secara kuantitas tetapi juga secara kualitas. Peningkatan kualitas jembatan dapat dilakukan dengan beberapa cara yaitu dengan meningkatkan mutu bahan yang dipergunakan dan dengan memberikan gaya prategang pada jembatan sebagai upaya peningkatan mutu jembatan yang sudah ada. Untuk mengetahui besarnya peningkatan kekuatan jembatan akibat penambahan kabel prategang tersebut maka dilakukan penelitian terhadap jembatan prategang.Untuk melihat seberapa besar pengaruh penambahan kabel prategang maka jembatan ditambahkan dengan kabel prategang internal tipe segitiga. Pengujian pun dilakukan dengan dua kondisi yaitu kondisi pertama ketika jembatan belum ditambahkan prategang dan kondisi kedua ketika jembatan ditambahkan prategang internal tipe segitiga. Dengan harapan hasil yang diperoleh dapat dibandingkan. Secara spesifik hasil pengujian yang dibandingkan adalah besarnya lendutan yang terjadi. Selain dibandingkan dengan dua kondisi diatas hasil pengujian di laboratorium juga dibandingkan dengan hasil pengujian secara teoritis dengan menggunakan software StaadPro 2004 tiga dimensi.Besarnya gaya prategang yang diberikan pada kabel prategang akan mempengaruhi besarnya lendutan yang terjadi pada jembatan rangka. Gaya prategang yang terlalu besar dapat mengakibatkan lendutan ke atas yang besar ketika beban minimum pada jembatan bekerja. Akan tetapi gaya prategang yang terlalu kecil juga dapat mengakibatkan lendutan ke bawah yang sangat besar pula ketika beban maksimum pada jembatan bekerja. Pada percobaan ini besarnya gaya prategang yang menghasilkan lendutan terkecil baik berupa lendutan ke atas maupun lendutan ke bawah ketika beban minimum dan maksimum bekerja adalah sebesar 484,714 kg. Sedangkan prosentase penurunan lendutan yang terjadi dari penelitian ini berkisar antara 1,786 % sampai 10,345 % dari gaya prategang acuan pertama 242,357 kg.

Abstract

The earthquake in Ambon City in 2019 damaged several buildings, including the DPRD building. This study aims to evaluate the seismic performance of the building and identify effective structural strengthening methods. The method used is pushover analysis, with structural modeling carried out using SAP2000 v.26. Lateral loads are applied gradually until the structure collapses. Secondary data in technical drawings and building documentation are used to build a structural model in SAP2000. The analysis results show that before reinforcement, the maximum roof displacement (?) reached 0.352 meters, with a total building height of 17 meters, resulting in a drift ratio of 0.0207 in the X–X direction, which is assumed to be the weak axis. Based on the ATC-40 criteria, this condition indicates the structural performance level in the "Life Safety" category. Concrete jacketing was applied to critical columns identified from the initial analysis to improve the structural performance. After remodeling the structure in the post-reinforcement condition, the study showed a reduction in maximum displacement to 0.335 meters, with a drift ratio of 0.01970. Performance level of the structure improved to the "Damage Control" category, indicating that the structure has better deformation capacity and lower potential for damage in the event of a similar-intensity earthquake.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of friction dampers to retrofit and enhance the seismic resilience of under-designed reinforced concrete buildings. A finite element model of a five-story reinforced concrete hospital, intentionally designed not to meet standard drift requirements, underwent nonlinear time history analysis. This analysis simulated two earthquake scenarios, with return periods of 225 (BSE-1E) and 975 (BSE-2E) years, considering soft soil conditions. The structure's seismic behavior was evaluated by analyzing key parameters such as base shear and inter-story drift ratio. The results showed that adding friction dampers significantly enhances the hospital's local and global structural performance in both earthquake scenarios. At the regional level, the dampers greatly decreased structural damage, eliminating plastic joints in the >CP category during the BSE-1E scenario and reducing them by up to 86.49% in the BSE-2E scenario. The dampers effectively reduced roof drift ratios at the global level, achieving a 45% reduction in the BSE-1E scenario. In the BSE-2E scenario, roof drift was kept below the Life Safety limit, with a 33.5% reduction. However, the dampers' effectiveness decreased as earthquake intensity increased, indicating limitations in their ability to manage scenarios beyond the initial design assumptions.

Abstract

Adaptive reuse of existing high-rise buildings often introduces severe vertical mass irregularities, particularly when functional changes significantly increase live loads. Unlike previous studies that typically isolate the effects of vertical irregularity or soft soil, this research distinctly quantifies the compounded detriment of top-heavy adaptive reuse, specifically on soft soil sites. This study conducts a forensic seismic assessment of a 15-story reinforced concrete frame that was converted from an office to an archive storage facility, where live loads increased from 2.4 kN/m² to 7.18 kN/m² on the upper floors. Using Nonlinear Static Procedures according to ASCE 41-17 with semi-rigid diaphragm modeling, the structural response is evaluated under Site Class SE conditions. The analysis reveals a "Gravity Strangle" mechanism, where excessive gravity loads from the archive storage consume a significant portion of the primary beam capacity before seismic excitation. The results demonstrate a critical discrepancy: while the global roof drift (1.56%) suggests safe Immediate Occupancy (IO) performance, the maximum inter-story drift spiked to 3.18% at the transition floors. Component-level analysis further reveals that 35% of primary beams at this level suffer severe plastic hinge rotations. These findings confirm that for top-heavy buildings on soft soil, relying solely on global drift indicators is deceptive. The study advocates for mandatory nonlinear component-level verification in future adaptive reuse codes to prevent brittle soft-story failures.
