Abstract

This research investigates the difficulties faced by second-semester students of the English Education Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in offline classroom settings. The research problem focuses on identifying linguistic, psychological, and contextual factors that hinder effective learning. The main objective is to analyze these challenges and provide insights for improving teaching and learning practices. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation from 15 purposively selected students. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (1994) framework data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing supported by NVivo software for thematic coding. Findings reveal that linguistic difficulties, particularly in listening comprehension, grammar mastery, pronunciation, and vocabulary, are the most dominant obstacles. Psychological barriers such as speaking anxiety, fear of mistakes, and low self-confidence further impede participation. Contextual issues, including noisy classrooms, ineffective teaching methods, and limited speaking practice, exacerbate the problem. Despite these challenges, students suggested interactive teaching strategies, such as games, storytelling, audiovisual aids, and real-life examples, to enhance engagement and comprehension. The research concludes that addressing both cognitive and affective needs through student-centered and communicative approaches, alongside improving classroom management and teaching materials, is essential for fostering a more effective EFL learning environment.

Abstract

Politeness and hedging are central in shaping credibility and interpersonal dynamics in online academic communication. This study examines how these strategies affect persuasion in Q&A forums, particularly Academia and CrossValidated communities on Stack Exchange. It aims to measure their influence on persuasive success through three indicators: answer acceptance, scoring, and response timing. Drawing on a corpus of 20,000+ threads, the study applies computational tools to detect politeness markers and hedging terms. The analysis uses mixed effects logistic regression, negative binomial regression, and Cox proportional hazards models, while controlling for user reputation, message length, and thread depth. Results show that politeness and hedging significantly enhance persuasive outcomes. Posts with more polite and mitigative language are more likely to be accepted, receive upvotes, and get faster responses. The effects are stronger for users with lower reputation, indicating that politeness functions as a compensatory strategy in digital peer interactions. The discussion acknowledges the limits of automated detection tools and stresses the role of context, culture, and disciplinary norms in interpreting politeness and hedging. This study concludes that politeness and hedging are essential rhetorical resources in digital academic dialogue. The findings offer practical implications for AI-driven moderation and feedback systems that aim to support inclusive and effective scholarly communication.

Abstract

The syntax–semantics interface has become a central focus in linguistics, as it explains how structural configurations shape meaning and how interpretation constrains syntactic possibilities. This review aims to synthesize theoretical, empirical, computational, and cross-linguistic perspectives to provide a comprehensive account of the interface. Findings indicate that generative and minimalist theories emphasize structural roles, while constructionist and distributional models highlight usage and context. Empirical studies reveal challenges for bilingual and heritage speakers, and computational approaches demonstrate the value of hybrid models bridging theory and data. The review contributes to advancing linguistic theory and practice by underscoring the need for integrative models that combine formal rigor, empirical validation, and cross-linguistic inclusivity.

Abstract

This study investigates the mediating roles of reflective practice and teacher self-efficacy in the development of Teacher Professional Identity (TPI). Although participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is widespread, little is known about how these experiences contribute to meaningful identity transformation for teachers. Addressing this gap, the study proposes a mediation model in which reflective practice indirectly enhances TPI through the intermediary construct of self-efficacy. Utilizing a cross-sectional design with a sample of 420 in-service teachers, the research employed validated instruments to measure reflective practice, self-efficacy, and TPI. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and PROCESS macro (Model 6) were used to analyze the direct and indirect effects. Bootstrapped confidence intervals and model fit indices (CFI = 0.96, TLI = 0.94, RMSEA = 0.045) confirmed the robustness of the proposed model. Results revealed a significant direct effect of reflective practice on TPI (β = 0.21, p = 0.042), and a stronger indirect effect mediated by self-efficacy (β = 0.34, p < 0.001). The findings support the hypothesis that self-efficacy plays a central role in converting reflective experiences into professional identity development. This mediation framework contributes to the theoretical discourse on TPI and underscores the importance of incorporating reflective and efficacy-building components into CPD. The study offers key implications for CPD design, advocating for culturally responsive and psychologically enriching programs that prioritize structured reflection and empower teachers to engage deeply with their evolving roles. Such initiatives are likely to yield sustained improvements in instructional quality and teacher resilience.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines students' views on the use of Basic Reading Comprehension materials developed with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and a multicultural-based approach. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of PBL with a multicultural approach to improve students' reading comprehension, motivation, and learning engagement in a diverse educational environment. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach involving 300 Indonesian students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires, then analyzed thematically to produce the effectiveness of this approach. Results: Students felt more motivated and active in discussions when the material combined problem-solving tasks and culturally relevant content. PBL improved the ability to understand texts through critical thinking and collaboration, while the multicultural approach helped students integrate the material with their cultural background, thus encouraging inclusivity and awareness of diversity. Challenges found include the need for more assistance for students who are not familiar with PBL. Conclusion: The integration of PBL with multicultural-based materials can significantly improve reading learning by making it more interactive, inclusive, and meaningful. It is recommended to provide additional support for diverse learners and develop more culturally responsive teaching materials.
