Abstract

This article examines the intellectual and organizational transformation of Muhammadiyah from Islamic puritanism toward Islamic cosmopolitanism within the framework of contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia. Historically, Muhammadiyah emerged as a reformist movement (tajdid) emphasizing the purification of Islamic beliefs and practices through strict adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, in recent decades, Muhammadiyah has increasingly articulated a cosmopolitan orientation characterized by openness to religious and cultural pluralism, interfaith dialogue, and active engagement in global humanitarian issues. This study employs a descriptive-analytical literature review method, drawing on classical and contemporary scholarly works on Muhammadiyah, Islamic reformism, and Islamic cosmopolitanism. The findings indicate that the shift from puritanism to cosmopolitanism is driven by internal intellectual dynamics, the expansion of modern education and scientific discourse, as well as external factors such as globalization, democratic transformation, and societal pluralism. Empirical examples from the literature demonstrate how the concept of Islam Berkemajuan has been institutionalized through Muhammadiyah’s involvement in education, healthcare, disaster relief, and interfaith cooperation at national and international levels. This transformation does not signify the abandonment of purificatory principles but rather reflects a reorientation of Islamic reform toward inclusivity, ethical universalism, and civilizational engagement. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah’s evolving synthesis of puritanism and cosmopolitanism represents a distinctive model of progressive Islam capable of contributing to both national cohesion and global humanitarian discourse. Keywords: Muhammadiyah, Islamic puritanism, Islamic cosmopolitanism, Progressive Islam, Islam Berkemajuan

Abstract

Agricultural land in Akar-Akar Village is dominated by dry soil with low productivity, which has become a major challenge for local farmers. On the other hand, corn cobs, which are abundantly available as post-harvest waste, have not been utilized optimally and are often considered as trash. This Community Service Program (KKN) aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of farmers in Akar-Akar Village regarding the potential use of corn cobs as biochar to improve soil quality. The method applied is a participatory approach through socialization and practical demonstration. The socialization stage provides theoretical understanding of the benefits of biochar, while the demonstration stage practices the direct process of producing biochar using a simple pyrolysis method with single drum kiln technology. The results of this activity indicate a significant increase in the community’s understanding and awareness of the benefits of biochar in improving the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil, as well as their ability to independently produce biochar from local agricultural waste. The conclusion of this program is that the socialization and demonstration of corn cob biochar technology successfully introduced a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sustainable solution to address the issue of dry soil fertility, while simultaneously transforming waste into a valuable resource in Akar-Akar Village.

Abstract

This study is to evaluate the efficacy of the implementation of Aceh Qanun Number 8 of 2016 about the Halal Product Guarantee System in enhancing the quality of products and packaging for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Aceh. The study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology, utilizing literature reviews derived from legal statutes, statistics from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS), reports from the Aceh Cooperatives and SMEs Office, and various pertinent scientific publications. The study's findings indicate that the Aceh Ulama Consultative Assembly (MPU) and LPPOM's implementation of halal certification is still facing a number of challenges. These include high certification costs, a lack of knowledge about halal among MSME actors, and ineffective supervision and mentoring systems at the district and city levels. However, halal certification has been shown to help improve the quality of products and packaging, promote cleaner and more sanitary production methods, and boost consumer trust in local goods. Halal certification is not only a way to enforce rules, but it also plays a strategic role in making the economy more competitive in the region and helping the concepts of maqāṣid al-syarī'ah to be used in the business world. This study is limited as it is conceptual and literature-based; thus, more research employing an empirical approach is advised to achieve a more full understanding of the impact of halal certification in Aceh.

Abstract

Sandy coastal farming has become a crucial livelihood strategy in Indonesia's marginal coastal areas, yet technology adoption remains uneven across farmer households. This study examines how the economic behavior of farmer households influences the intensity of sandy coastal farming technology adoption and analyzes how changes in internal and external factors impact adoption, production, labor allocation, income, and expenditure. Using primary cross-sectional data from 196 farmer households in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, the study applies an integrated household economic model estimated as a system of simultaneous equations using the Two-Stage Least Squares method. Technology adoption is represented through the allocation of cultivated land and the use of soil-improving inputs, allowing for the examination of adoption intensity within a unified household decision framework. The results show that adoption intensity is primarily driven by household income and family labor availability, with cultivated area acting as a key transmission channel linking income to input use and production outcomes. Higher returns from sandy coastal farming induce substitution toward hired labor rather than proportional increases in family labor. Simulation results indicate that output price incentives strengthen adoption through income and scale effects, while reductions in irrigated land weaken adoption by tightening household resource constraints. These findings underscore the significance of income stability and access to resources in maintaining high adoption intensity in marginal land systems.

Abstract

Kasepuhan Karang is one of the Sundanese indigenous communities located in the Lebak Regency, Banten Province, Indonesia. This community is part of a network of kasepuhan around the Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (TNGHS). Their lives are closely related to environmental sustainability, especially in the management of customary forests. The social and cultural systems of the Kasepuhan Karang community reflect harmony between humans and nature. These values are reflected in customary traditions such as ngaseuk (planting), customary spatial planning that divides the area into restricted forests, production forests, and agricultural land, as well as tatali paranti (customary rules) that serve as guidelines for maintaining ecosystem sustainability. This study focuses on the importance of the Kasepuhan Karang Customary Forest in the context of environmental conservation and climate change mitigation. In addition, this study will identify the main challenges faced in preserving customary forests, including policy aspects, cross-sectoral understanding, and external pressures that threaten their sustainability. By prioritizing the perspective of indigenous peoples as the primary managers of the forest, this study aims to provide an overview of how synergy between local traditions and modern policies can be realized to support sustainable development.
