Abstract

The proliferation of digital misinformation poses significant challenges for elementary students' information literacy, necessitating robust critical reading skills to evaluate and synthesize textual information effectively. This study systematically assessed the critical reading skills of fifth-grade students in comprehending narrative texts, examining performance across literal, inferential, and evaluative dimensions. A quantitative descriptive design was employed with 34 fifth-grade students (23 males, 11 females) from SDN 1 Sukaresmi, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia. The critical reading assessment, based on Nurhadi's framework and validated through expert review (Cronbach's α = 0.82), measured six primary indicators using narrative texts from government-curated quality reading materials. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparative analyses. Students demonstrated moderate proficiency in literal comprehension (46.81%) but substantial deficits in higher-order skills, particularly synthesis (35.66%), interpretation of implied meanings (37.01%), and cause-and-effect understanding (34.56%). Female students exhibited marginally higher performance (42.22%) compared to males (38.81%), though differences were not statistically significant. Overall achievement averaged 39.91%, indicating medium-to-low critical reading competency. Critical reading skills among upper elementary students remain underdeveloped, especially in inferential and evaluative domains. These findings underscore the necessity for explicit instructional interventions targeting higher-order comprehension strategies, including scaffolded inference training and causal reasoning instruction, to enhance elementary literacy quality.

Abstract

Conflict resolution skills are critical social-emotional competencies for primary school students, yet the dimensional profile of these skills in the Indonesian context remains insufficiently documented.  This study employed a quantitative descriptive survey design to examine the conflict resolution skills of 53 fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Karangreja and SDN 2 Karangreja, Karangreja District. Data were collected using a 54-item, four-point Likert scale questionnaire developed on the basis of Crawford and Bodine's (1996) six-dimensional framework, encompassing orientation, perception, emotional management, communication, creative thinking, and critical thinking skills. The instrument demonstrated satisfactory validity and high reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.87). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics.  All six dimensions fell within the Moderate mastery category. Communication skills recorded the highest mean score (57.02%), followed by orientation (56.39%), while emotional management yielded the lowest score (43.19%). These findings indicate that students possess foundational but incomplete conflict resolution competencies, with relational-communicative skills more developed than affective and higher-order cognitive capacities — a pattern that challenges a strictly linear reading of Crawford and Bodine's developmental sequence. The study contributes a theoretically grounded, empirically differentiated competency profile to the discourse on social-emotional learning in Indonesian primary education, with implications for curriculum design and targeted instructional intervention.

Abstract

Reading ability is a fundamental skill essential to the learning process. However, a low Effective Reading Speed (ERS), which includes both reading speed and comprehension, poses a significant challenge that can negatively impact student learning outcomes. Slow reading speed and inadequate comprehension hinder students from effectively absorbing information, ultimately affecting their overall academic performance. This study aims to assess the ERS of elementary school students after implementing the Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, Test (PQRST) method in their learning process. It employs a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consists of 20 fifth-grade students selected from a population of 84 at a primary school in Coblong Subdistrict, Bandung City, West Java Province, Indonesia. Data collection involved reading speed and comprehension tests, which were analyzed using the ERS formula. The results indicate that the PQRST method is effective for teaching reading, particularly in improving ERS. Post-test results show a notable improvement compared to pretest scores. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of the PQRST method in elementary education, encouraging teachers to integrate it into their reading instruction. Additionally, it serves as a reference for further research on reading strategies in early education.

Abstract

One significant obstacle to improving basic literacy standards in Indonesia is the low initial reading proficiency among primary school students. To strengthen students' understanding of letter-sound relationships, innovative teaching approaches are essential. This study investigated the combined effects of phonics instruction and Beginning Reading (BR) media on elementary students' early reading abilities. Using a quasi-experimental pre-experimental design, the research employed descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and a one-group pretest-posttest framework. Eighteen participants demonstrated pretest scores ranging from 28.46 to 70.76, reflecting varying baseline reading levels. Following the instructional intervention, posttest results revealed substantial improvement, with scores climbing to 82-100 and an average N-Gain score of 82.85. These outcomes demonstrate marked progress in reading competency, providing robust empirical support for integrating phonics methodology with interactive BR media. The results highlight two key findings: (1) the effectiveness of combining systematic phonics with multimedia tools, and (2) technology's role in creating engaging, practical learning solutions for foundational literacy. This research contributes meaningfully to primary education by validating an evidence-based approach that addresses Indonesia's literacy challenges while aligning with contemporary digital learning environments. The demonstrated improvements in reading skills underscore the potential of this combined methodology to transform early reading instruction.

Abstract

Digital literacy is a crucial competency for Generation Alpha students growing up in an increasingly complex digital environment. Although elementary school students are now intensively exposed to technology from an early age, their digital literacy levels have not yet developed optimally across all dimensions, and the contextual factors that shape their profile differences, such as grade level, age, gender, and device ownership, are not yet empirically understood. This study aims to analyze the digital literacy levels of upper-grade students at a public elementary school in Cimahi City, based on the four pillars of digital literacy, and to compare their profiles across these contextual variables. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted with 150 students through purposive sampling, using a 20-item questionnaire adapted from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Development (Kemkomdigi) framework (2025). The results showed an overall achievement of 83.56% (Good category), with the highest digital security (90.59%) and the lowest digital skills (74.52%). There is a consistent upward trend across grade (79.71%–85.87%) and age (76.67%–85.17%), with minimal gender differences, and students with their own devices outperformed those using parental devices on the digital skills and safety pillar. The gap between high levels of ethical awareness and digital safety on the one hand and low levels of productive skills on the other hand indicates that technology exposure has not been optimally directed in the learning context. These findings indicate the need for targeted interventions to strengthen elementary school students' productive digital competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the RADEC (Read-Answer-Discuss-explain-Create) learning model in improving fifth-grade elementary students’ reading comprehension of procedural texts compared to conventional instruction. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent group pretest-posttest method was applied. The participants consisted of fifth-grade students from two elementary schools in Kuningan Regency, divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through pretest and posttest, then analyzed using an independent sample t-test assisted by Jeffreys’s Amazing Statictics Program (JASP). The results showed a statistically significant difference in improvement between the two goups, as indicated by a p-value of 0.001 (sig. 2-tailed< 0.05). These findings suggest that the RADEC model is effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension, especially in understanding procedural texts, when compared to conventional learning. The implication of this research is that the RADEC learning model has the potential to be adopted as an innovative learning model to support literacy development at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Using VOSviewer software, this study aims to determine research trends by conducting bibliometric analysis mapping of articles obtained from Google Scholar on the topic of character education and interactive learning multimedia in elementary schools. The keywords "character education," "interactive learning multimedia," and "elementary school" were used to gather article data using the Publish or Perish manager tool. There were 992 articles from 2012 to 2022 in the results. Multimedia interactive learning and network visualization education are not closely related. The most researched topic is interactive multimedia learning with learning motivation. In the meantime, it is difficult to understand how interactive multimedia, elementary school, and character education are related to network visualization. These findings suggest that there is still a dearth of studies on the relationship between multimedia interactive learning and character education in primary schools. This finding indicates that there is a great chance to undertake this research in the future, which will lead to innovative findings.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the RADEC learning model (LM) assisted by e-modules on cultural diversity and to examine its effect on the multicultural understanding and tolerant attitudes attitudes of fourth-grade elementary school students. It also compares the improvement of both variables between students taught using the RADEC LM assisted by e-modules on cultural diversity and those taught using the expository learning model. The study employs a quasi-experimental approach with a Non-equivalent Pretest and Posttest Control Group Design. The participants consist of fourth-grade students from two elementary schools in Waringinkurung District, Serang Regency, Banten Province. Data are collected through observations, questionnaires, and essay tests, and are analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and independent-sample t-tests with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 29. The results show that the implementation of the RADEC LM assisted by e-modules on cultural diversity is carried out effectively in the experimental group. The paired-sample t-test indicates significant effects on both multicultural understanding and tolerant attitudes attitudes, with significance values of 0.000 (Sig. < 0.05). The independent-sample t-test also demonstrates significant differences between the experimental and control groups in multicultural understanding (Sig. = 0.000 for posttest; Sig. < 0.05 for n-gain) and tolerant attitudes attitudes (Sig. = 0.000 for posttest; Sig. < 0.05 for n-gain). Furthermore, the n-gain scores of the experimental group fall into the high category for multicultural understanding (0.79) and tolerant attitudes attitudes (0.90), while the control group scores fall into the moderate category. These findings indicate that the RADEC LM assisted by e-modules on cultural diversity is effective in enhancing students’ multicultural understanding and tolerant attitudes attitudes. The study implies that teachers can employ this model to strengthen literacy in reading and writing as well as digital technology skills.
