Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss,Explain, Create) instructional model in enhancing science literacy among fifth-grade students in SocialScience and Natural Science (IPAS) lessons. The RADEC model was implemented to replaceconventional teacher-centered teaching methods, which limit student engagement in the learningprocess. A quantitative research approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed, involvingtwo groups: the experimental group utilizing the RADEC model and the control group employingtraditional teaching methods. Data were collected through a science literacy assessment consisting ofmultiple-choice and essay questions, which were subjected to validity and reliability tests. The resultsindicated that the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement, with an average N-Gainof 8.21, whereas the control group showed minimal improvement with an N-Gain of 0.07. These findingssuggest that the RADEC model is more effective in fostering science literacy compared to conventionalteaching methods. However, factors such as lesson duration, student engagement, and teacherreadiness should be carefully considered to optimize the model’s implementation. The studyrecommends extending lesson durations, providing comprehensive teacher training for the RADECmodel, and enhancing student participation through the integration of technology and interactive media.

Abstract

Previous studies on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) have demonstrated its potential to enhance higher-order thinking skills; however, limited research has integrated PjBL with a Deep Learning approach at the elementary school level, particularly in the Indonesian context. This study offers a novel contribution by combining PjBL with structured deep-learning processes—conceptual elaboration, reflective inquiry, and metacognitive reinforcement—to strengthen students’ critical thinking development more comprehensively. This research employed a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 64 fifth-grade students at SDN Pejaten 2 during a four-meeting intervention. Critical thinking skills were measured using a validated essay test, and data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test and effect size calculation. Findings show a significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills, with the mean score increasing from 63.1 (pretest) to 82.4 (posttest) (t = 6.32; p < 0.001). The intervention yielded a large effect size (Cohen’s d > 0.80), indicating strong practical significance. These results highlight that integrating PjBL with a Deep Learning approach produces deeper cognitive engagement compared with conventional PjBL implementations reported in prior literature. This study provides empirical evidence that project-based learning enriched with deep-thinking processes can serve as an effective pedagogical model for fostering 21st-century competencies in elementary education.

Abstract

21st century learning requires mastery of collaboration skills as part of the 4C competencies (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication) that are important for future learning success. However, initial observations at SDN Tanjungsari in Pabuaran District show that first-grade students remain passive and struggle to collaborate effectively in completing group tasks, highlighting the need for improved learning strategies. This study aims to analyze the improvement of students' collaboration skills through the use of mini-project-based learning media designed in accordance with the principles of social constructivism, where knowledge is built through interaction and cooperation among students. The research method used is quantitative with a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design. The research subjects consisted of 25 first-grade students. Data were collected using a collaboration skills observation sheet and analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results showed a significantincrease in students' collaboration skills after the implementation of mini-project media, with the average score increasing from 63.4 to 82.8 (p < 0.05). These findings confirm that simple and contextual project activities, such as creating collages and posters with environmental themes, are effective in fosteringresponsibility, communication, and cooperation. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of applying a mini-project-based learning approach as a strategy for integrating collaborative values from the elementary school level in order to realize active, meaningful, and participatory 21st-century learning.

Abstract

The development of digital literacy in primary schools has not progressed in line with the increasing availability of digital devices. This study analyzes the implementation of digital libraries in supporting digital literacy learning in a public primary school in Purwakarta Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study involved 25 participants consisting of one principal (4%), four teachers (16%), and 20 students from grades four and five (80%). Data were obtained through observation, semi structured interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that digital libraries expand students’access to information and enhance independence in searching for digital content, where 70% of students demonstrate high information-seeking autonomy. Teachers’ utilization of digital libraries is categorized as moderate (50%), while access to digital devices remains uneven, with only 35% of students in the high-access category. The use of digital libraries also strengthens students’ critical and reflective skills, although implementation is constrained by limited facilities, low teacher proficiency in managing digital shelves, and restrictive school policies particularly the ban on mobile phone use. Overall, digital librariesfunction as collaborative learning spaces that support the development of 21st-century competencies when supported by adequate infrastructure and flexible school regulations.

Abstract

Communication skills are one of the basic abilities that must be developed since elementary school because they play a crucial role in the learning process and social interactions at school. However, in reality, many elementary school students still experience difficulties in expressing ideas, expressing opinions, and actively participating in learning activities. This condition was also found at SDN Taman, Kibin District, where some students demonstrated suboptimal communication skills. This study aims to analyze the level of communication skills of fifth grade students at SDN Taman, Kibin District. The type of research used was descriptive quantitative with a sample of 52 students. The research instrument was an observation sheet based on four indicators of communication skills according to Budiono and Abdurrohman (2020), namely the ability to listen well, express ideas and thoughts effectively, convey information clearly, and provide responses to the opinions of others. The results showed that students' overall communication skills were in the sufficient category with an average score of 60%. Two indicators that achieved good results were listening and responding skills, while the other two indicators, expressing ideas and conveying information, remained in the sufficient categories. Based on these results, it is recommended that teachers implement learning models that encourage interaction, discussion, and presentation, to help students more actively express ideas and improve their overall communication skills.

Abstract

The low reading literacy skills of elementary school students remain a serious issue in Indonesian education. Observations at SDN Cijeruk reveal that most fifth-grade students struggle to identify main ideas, make inferences, and understand implied meanings in reading texts. This condition highlights the need for a learning model that fully engages students in the reading process. This study aims to analyze the effect of the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) learning model on improving the reading literacy of fifth-grade students at SDN Cijeruk. The research employed a quasi experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. A total of 68 students participated, divided into an experimental class (34 students) applying the RADEC model and a control class (34 students) using conventional learning. Data were obtained through pretest and posttest reading literacy assessments and analyzed using a t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental class, with a mean posttest score of 83.47 compared to 75.12 in the control class (tcount = 3.42 > ttable = 2.00). These findings indicate that the RADEC model effectively enhances students’ reading comprehension skills. The novelty of this study lies in its application of the RADEC model to strengthen reading literacy in a rural elementary school context an area that has received limited attention in prior RADEC-based literacy research. The model fosters critical thinking, collaborative discussion, and deeper text comprehension among students.

Abstract

Writing instruction at the upper primary school level faces a variety of complex challenges, particularly in terms of improving student motivation, critical thinking skills, and the quality of their writing. Advances in digitaltechnology provide a strategic opportunity to enrich the writing learning process to make it more engaging, contextually relevant, and aligned with the characteristics of a generation that is familiar with the digital world. This study aims to systematically examine findings from previous studies related to the application of technology in writing instruction in upper elementary school. The approach used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which thoroughly and structurally analyzes studies discussing the implementation of digital technology in upper elementary writing education. This method was chosen to ensure the review process is transparent, objective, and replicable. The SLR process includes the identification, selection, analysis, and synthesis of scholarly articlespublished between 2018 and 2024. Identification was carried out by searching academic articles from leading databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar. The findings reveal that the use oftechnologies such as digital storytelling, online collaboration platforms, learning management systems, and AI based applications can enhance student engagement, creativity, and narrative and expository writing skills. Additionally, technology integration encourages educators to develop innovative and flexible digital teaching methods. However, several obstacles were identified, including limited ICT facilities in schools, varying levels of teachers’ digital competence, and the need for ongoing training programs. The study concludes that integrating technology into upper elementary writing instruction holds great potential for improving writing literacy quality, provided it is supported by strong educational policies, adequate digital infrastructure, and enhanced teacher professionalism

Abstract

Students' conceptual understanding of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences (IPAS) on the topic of the solar system is still low due to the dominance of conventional, non-interactive learning media. This condition highlights the need for technological innovations that provide contextual and engaging learning experiences. This study aims to test the effectiveness of Augmented Reality (AR)-based learning media in improving students' conceptual understanding. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving two sixth-grade classes at SDN Sanding 2, Petir District, with a total of 60 students. The experimental class used AR media, while the control class used conventional 2D images. Data were collected through pretest and posttest assessments. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test to determine the difference in the average score increase between the experimental and control groups, after first conducting a normality and homogeneity prerequisite test. The results of the independent t-test show that t_count = 5.92 > t_table = 2.00 with a p-value of 0.000, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. The average conceptual understanding score in the experimental class increased by 18.6 points, compared to 6.4 points in the control class. These findings indicate that Augmented Reality-based learning media effectively improves conceptual understanding and student engagement in learning about the solar system in elementary education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the trends and effectiveness of learning models used to improve explanatory text writing skills in elementary school students. This study used the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Articles were collected from the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases with a publication range of 2015–2024. Of the total 120 articles identified, nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were further analyzed. The synthesis results show that constructivist-based learning models such as Project-Based Learning (PjBL), Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL), Discovery Learning, Genre-Based Approach (GBA), and RADEC are effective in improving students' explanatory text writing skills. This effectiveness is related to the characteristics of the model, which emphasizes active engagement, collaboration, reflection, and higher-order thinking processes. This study recommends that elementary school teachers strengthen their pedagogical competencies in applying innovative learning models that are appropriate to the characteristics of students and the texts being taught.
