Abstract

This systematic literature review delves into the varied global motivations shaping English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning within diverse university contexts. Examining Tay Do University in Vietnam, the study illuminates a blend of intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to moderate motivation levels. Lithuania's emphasis on instrumental orientation among university students showcases the multifaceted nature of motivation. In Sweden, the research brings attention to challenges faced by newly arrived students, suggesting a need for policy adjustments to address these issues effectively. Indonesian graduates opt for informal education to enhance English proficiency, underlining the importance of diverse methods and success stories in the learning process. Cambodia's exploration reveals nuanced motivational orientations among university students. French higher education students exhibit diverse attitudes toward EFL learning, Japan displays a positive outlook, Saudi students lean towards extrinsic motivations, and Taiwan emphasizes the creation of motivated learning experiences. These findings collectively offer valuable insights for refining teaching strategies, making informed policy adjustments, and inspiring further research initiatives within the realm of EFL learning. Ultimately, this comprehensive review contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of motivations influencing EFL learners globally.

Abstract

One of the oral traditions that has developed to date in the Selayar Islands Regency is battki. Battik-battik belongs to the categories of folk songs. Battik-battik comes from the word ambatti which means to squeeze. The musical instrument used is the harp, therefore it is called battik- battik. Battik-battik is sung by men and women alternately on stage without using text, meaning this song is sung spontaneously. In the batti-batti folk song, there are cultural values sung by the singer, namely the culture of tabe, sipakatu and si usingnga'. So that in this study the authors used multi-disciplines, namely anthropolinguistics with the aim of exploring these cultures hidden in the text or song lyrics that are sung. Anthropolinguistics is a study that discuss the relationship or connection between culture and language. in anthropolinguistics studies examiners more how languages is used US a tools for social action. This research method uses qualitative research methods to explain a phenomenon in depth and is carried out by collecting data as deeply as possible.

Abstract

Advances in technology have made it easy for all writers to check their academic writing using automated writing assessment programs. However, using this program can have both advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, its advantages and disadvantages should be considered. To address this need, this study aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Grammarly program as an automated writing assessment program for assessing academic writing. Using narrative research to explore the experiences of three Indonesian graduate students through interviews and documents, the program offers helpful color-coded feedback with explanations and examples, easy account access, rapid assessment speed, and It was indicated that they provide free services for academic evaluation. write. However, we have identified several concerns when using this program, including: Weaknesses of the program included some misleading feedback, weaknesses in English type recognition and reference lists, and lack of context and content assessment. Further research is needed on the effectiveness of the feedback provided by Grammarly in improving the quality of students' writing.

Abstract

Culture is a symbol as well as complex facts and symbols made by humans, passed down from generation to generation as determinants and regulators of human behavior in existing society. Cultural settings can be defined as multidimensional which plays an important role in every individual such as forming attitudes, beliefs, and individual behavior. Culture can be said as a comprehensive concept, and includes almost everything that influences the thinking process and individual behavior. This culture can be formed through classification based on certain categories such as nationality, religion, racial group, and geographical location. This study discusses matters such as the following, cultural Influences on purchasing decisions, dimension of culture, current trends in consumer culture, the influence of myths on marketing in the modern age, and the influence of a group or individual mode system.

Abstract

This study aims to determine (1) the influence of parents' parenting styles and language attitudes collectively on reading comprehension abilities; and (2) the influence of parents' parenting styles and language attitudes individually on reading comprehension abilities. This research employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires and objective tests. Questionnaires were used to gather data on parents' parenting styles and language attitudes, while objective tests were used to collect data on reading comprehension abilities. The sample for this study consisted of 69 students. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and regression analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that (1) there is a positive and significant influence of parents' parenting styles and language attitudes collectively on the reading comprehension abilities of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Maiwa, amounting to 85.5%; and (2) there is a positive and significant influence of parenting styles on reading comprehension abilities amounting to 38.7%, and the influence of language attitudes on reading comprehension abilities is 10.2%. These findings suggest that both good parenting styles and positive language attitudes contribute significantly to students' reading comprehension abilities. Parenting styles provide a greater contribution compared to language attitudes in enhancing students' reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation and evaluation of the bilingual program for eighth-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 1 Sidrap (MTSN). As globalization intensifies, bilingual education is becoming increasingly vital in preparing students for future academic and professional challenges. This research focuses on how the bilingual program is integrated into the curriculum at MTSN, with particular emphasis on its effectiveness in enhancing students' proficiency in both Indonesian and English.The study employs a mixed-methods approach to evaluate the program's impact. Quantitative data were collected through standardized language proficiency tests and academic performance records, while qualitative insights were gathered from interviews with educators, students, and parents. The research aims to assess the program's success in improving language skills, examine any challenges encountered during implementation, and provide recommendations for program enhancement. Preliminary findings suggest that the bilingual program has positively impacted students' language proficiency and academic performance. However, challenges such as insufficient teacher training and resource limitations were identified. The study underscores the importance of continuous evaluation and adaptation to address these challenges and enhance the program's effectiveness.This research contributes to the broader discourse on bilingual education by providing empirical evidence on the implementation and impact of bilingual programs in a specific educational context. The insights gained from this study are expected to inform policy decisions and practice in bilingual education, particularly in similar educational settings.

Abstract

One of the most controversial curriculums implemented in Indonesia is 2013 curriculum. After the government assigned that in 2023 all of schools are expected to use the 2013 curriculum, yet in December 2014 the Ministry of Education changed the obligation with stated that the school that implemented the 2013 curriculum for about one semester should go back to KTSP curriculum. Frequently curriculum change in Indonesia give impact for teaching and learning process and to education stockholder. This study aimed to investigate the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in English teaching practice, to know the problems that teacher and student faces in the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum in ELT practice, and also to analysis the students’ perception toward ELT practice related to the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. Descriptive qualitative research is the design of this research. Subjects of this research are English teacher and student of one vocational school in Indonesia. The data were collected by using triangulation method namely interview, observation and documentation. Semi-structured interview used to get the data about the English teacher’s understanding toward the implementation of the 2013. Classroom observation use to observed the English teacher’s teaching practice in implementing the 2013 curriculum. The researcher also interviewed students to know the students’ perception toward the ELT practices and the problems face by students in ELT practice. The data from interview and were analyzed through interactive model analysis develop by Miles and Huberman (1994). Findings showed that the teacher’s understanding toward the aspects in teaching process of Standard Process of the 2013 Curriculum was satisfactory. In the main activities, teacher’s teaching practice is accordance with the teaching process of the standard process of the 2013 curriculum. The limited time allotted for English subject was the main problems in teaching English by implementing the 2013 curriculum. The students’ perception toward the ELT process in their class was positive because all of them stated that the English class was enjoyable. The most problem that the students found in learning English is speaking. Based on the students’ interview, the researcher assumed, the limited time to practice English cause the difficulty in speaking.

Abstract

This study uses a quantitative method with the type of experimental research that aims to determine the effectiveness of using Flip Books on the results of Craft and Entrepreneurship learning for class XI SMA Muhammadiyah Pangsid, Sidenreng Rappang Regency.The population of this study were all 27 students of class XI SMA Muhammadiyah Pangsid, and the sample of this study was 27 people using the total sampling technique, namely by taking the overall sample. The data collection techniques used were documentation techniques, test techniques, and questionnaire techniques. The indicators of effectiveness in this study are based on Sinambela's theory (2006), the three indicators of effectiveness are: learning completeness, timeliness, and student responses. Learning outcomes are a measure of one's success. The results of this study indicate that the average posttest score is 88.0% higher, while the pretest result is 70.9%. The results showed that the use of Flip Books on the learning outcomes of crafts and entrepreneurship in class XI SMA Muhammadiyah Pangsid was declared effective.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the forms of deixis and their reference meanings found in the novel Dunia Anna by Jostein Gaarder. This article is a study that uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data are in the form of words, phrases, sentences that contain deixis in the novel Dunia Anna. The data collection techniques in this study were intensive reading techniques and recording techniques, after which the data were analyzed using the Yule theory with the Miles and Huberman models, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions/verification. Based on data analysis, five forms of deixis were found in the novel Dunia Anna by Jostein Gaarder, namely persona deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The forms of personal deixis found include 1) (I) and (I) as the first singular personal deixis, 2) (we) and (us) as the plural first person deixis, 3) (you), (you) and (you) as second person singular deixis, 4) (you) as plural second person deixis, 5) (he) and (she) as third person singular deixis, 6) (they) as third person plural deixis. Whereas the forms of place deixis are here, there, and there. While the deixis of time are, present time, past time and future time. Discourse deixis and social deixis are also found in this novel. Discourse deixis includes anaphora and cataphora while social deixis includes age, gender, occupation, and social position. The conclusion of this article is the use of the form of persona deixis that dominates the forms of deixis found in the novel, this is because the characters in the story often mention themselves in the dialogue.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role and contributions of students’ English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidrap in the Teaching Assistance Program at SMAN 2 Sidrap as part of the Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka (PKKM). The Teaching Assistance Program plays a crucial role in supporting students’ academic development. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of Teaching Assistance Program in enhancing their learning experience, academic performance, and engagement. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, utilizing surveys and in-depth interviews with students of SMAN 2 Sidrap. The Data from the survey analyzed by using descriptive statistics analyses to see the students’ perception toward the effectiveness of teaching assistance program. The data from interview analyzed used interactive model analysis, there are three concurrent verification flow of activity in the mode data reduction, data display, and data conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that students perceive Teaching Assistance Program as an essential support system that improves their understanding of course material, facilitates personalized learning, and promotes collaborative learning environments. The data also show that student involvement in various aspects of education, including teaching and guiding extracurricular activities where facilitating student character development. Teaching Assistance students not only supported classroom learning but also participated in various activities that improved student discipline and engagement. However, challenges related to the ability and competence of Teaching Assistance students were identified. The study concludes with recommendations to optimize the teaching ability of Teaching Assistance students to better address the students in school needs.
