Abstract

Despite the emphasis on higher-order thinking skills in 21st-century learning, computational thinking skills among elementary school students remain underdeveloped. Many students rely on memorization instead of understanding the logical, systematic process of solving problems, particularly in science. This is evident in their inability to break down complex problems into smaller parts, identify interrelationships between components, and develop structured, step-by-step solution strategies. This indicates a gap between future competency needs and classroom learning practices. This study aims to examine and describe the computational thinking abilities of fourth-grade students in relation to energy and its changes. The study will determine if there is a problem with students' computational thinking abilities in this context. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method with a sample of 80 students from several elementary schools. The instrument used was a written test based on computational thinking indicators, including decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithms. The results showed that students' computational thinking ability was poor because the value range was 62. Students can identify patterns and organize problem-solving steps systematically. However, they still have difficulty abstracting information and breaking down complex problems into simpler parts. These findings underscore the importance of integrating learning activities that stimulate computational thinking skills early on, particularly in elementary school science education, and of applying appropriate models to enhance students' computational thinking abilities.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the RADEC learning model in enhancing 21st-century skills in the Social Studies (IPS) subject at elementary schools. The research employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach involving fifth-grade students at a public elementary school in Bandung City. The RADEC model was implemented through the stages of Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, and Create, designed to develop students' critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills. At the Create stage, the philosophy of positivism serves as an important foundation, where students are encouraged to create works based on empirical observation so that the results are not only innovative but also objectively testable. The results showed a significant improvement in student abilities, with the average score increasing from 60.17 (pre-test) to 85.67 (post-test), and the percentage of students achieving the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) rising from 33.3% to 93.3%. These findings affirm that the RADEC model integrated with the positivist approach can encourage students to actively create real solutions in the context of elementary school Social Studies learning.

Abstract

Up to now the integration of religion and science in the implementation of learning is often neglected. Whereas, these two aspects are part of the curriculum and educational objectives. The study in this article is aimed to examine the integration of religious beliefs in achieving the knowledge on natural science teaching and learning that is applied by elementary school teachers so far. The research method is a case study with the elementary school teacher as the research subject. The sources of data are observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The data analysis technique used is descriptive quantitative for the questionnaire and analyzed to in-depth qualitative data entirely. The findings showed that up to now elementary school teachers have integrated religious beliefs and science by relating the verses of the Al-Qur'an to the natural science learning materials, but they rarely integrated students' religious beliefs in achieving scientific knowledge in natural science learning. Teachers have often difficulties integrated religious and scientific beliefs in applying methods, time management, and teaching and learning materials. Teachers sometimes applied teaching strategies such as motivating students, giving apperception and using the methods to integrate the religious beliefs into natural science learning. The teachers have not ever applied any assessment yet related to the religious beliefs in natural science learning. Students are sometimes active to be involved in the discussion and question and answer session about the religious beliefs in achieving their science and knowledge in natural science learning class. The integration of religious beliefs in natural science learning should be implemented explicitly in order to make these two aspects become a unified whole curriculum.

Abstract

This study investigates how global diversity values are incorporated into Social Studies (IPS) modules in Indonesian primary schools under the Merdeka Curriculum. Global diversity, part of the Pancasila Student Profile, stresses cultural pluralism, inclusive interaction, and equal participation in multicultural settings. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research involved document analysis, interviews with school leaders and teachers, and classroom observations, analyzed through Miles and Huberman’s (2014) interactive model. The study discovered that schools vary in their effectiveness in integrating global diversity values through themes such as "Cultural and Social Diversity" and "Global Interactions." Effective strategies included contextual content, reflective discussions, and project-based learning. Success factors were teacher competence, leadership, and community involvement, while challenges included limited training, time, and assessment tools. The Merdeka Curriculum offers a solid base for global citizenship education, but systematic teacher development and better module design are needed for consistent, meaningful integration.

Abstract

Creative Problem Solving (CPS) enhances adaptability, fosters innovation, and improves productivity. However, integrating CPS in education remains challenging. This study examines trends, key themes, and gaps in CPS research within education from 2007 to 2024 through bibliometric analysis. Data was collected from Scopus due to its extensive interdisciplinary coverage and credibility in indexing peer-reviewed journals in education, psychology, and cognitive sciences. A total of 68 publications were selected based on relevance to CPS in education and journal type. The analysis focused on publication trends, thematic developments, and methodological approaches. Findings indicate that traditional curricula emphasizing rote memorization hinder CPS integration. Innovative approaches such as problem-based learning, project-based learning, and STEM education offer potential solutions. Between 2007 and 2018, research mainly explored CPS concepts. In 2019, the focus shifted towards instructional models, with 2020 marking the peak of CPS-related publications. Strategies supporting CPS development include automated assessment tools, flipped learning, and interdisciplinary approaches. Thematic analysis highlights the connection between CPS, creativity, and problem-solving. The study identifies significant advancements in CPS research, with implications for curriculum development, teacher training, and policy-making. Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR), show promise in expanding CPS applications in education. Future research should explore technology-enhanced CPS strategies to further enhance problem-solving skills across various educational contexts.

Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are critical for students to effectively understand and articulate mathematical concepts, directly impacting their numeracy and academic success. This study examines the effectiveness of the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) instructional model in improving the mathematical communication skills of sixth-grade students. A quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach was employed, involving 60 sixth-grade elementary students. The experimental group (n = 30; 19 males, 11 females) received instruction through the RADEC model, while the control group (n = 30; 12 males, 18 females) was taught using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. Data were collected using a test consisting of five open-ended descriptive questions administered as pre- and post-tests. The N-Gain score was used to assess improvement, and the Mann-Whitney U test was applied to evaluate statistical significance. The RADEC group exhibited a moderate increase in mathematical communication skills, whereas the PBL group demonstrated only a low level of improvement. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between the two groups (asymp. Sig. 0.001, α = 0.05), indicating that the RADEC model was more effective. These findings suggest that the RADEC model enhances students’ mathematical communication more effectively than PBL, likely due to its emphasis on active engagement and collaborative learning. The model shows promise as a pedagogical approach and warrants further investigation regarding its impact on other mathematical competencies, including problem-solving, representation, critical thinking, and mathematical connections.
