Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on the development of language teachers; however, how to effectively support and enhance their confidence remains largely under-researched and inadequately understood. This mixed-methods sequential explanatory study explores how a four-month blended teacher training program, combined with varying levels of institutional support, may enhance English teachers' confidence in language use and understanding essential teaching methodologies. The training program integrated the ELTeach platform, a globally recognized online training resource, with in-person workshops. The study involved 250 Indonesian teachers from Islamic elementary and secondary schools; however, it primarily reports on the findings from 26 participants, divided into two equal groups based on their perceived institutional support. Participants self-assessed their confidence levels before and after training. Results from mixed ANOVA analyses indicate that ELTeach-based training significantly increased ELT professional confidence; however, perceived institutional support and the combination of training with support did not yield a significant impact. Interviews with six participants—involving three teachers before and after training and three principals after the training—showed the impact of personal factors and the dynamics within the training program. The alignment between the quantitative and qualitative findings underscored the training potential to promote teacher professional confidence, regardless of the level of institutional support. The study concludes with the implications for the development of teacher professional development, especially in promoting teacher confidence.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of short-form video platforms has expanded opportunities for informal English learning beyond traditional classroom settings. Among these platforms, TikTok has gained increasing scholarly attention due to its microlearning features and high levels of student engagement. However, empirical evidence linking TikTok engagement to self-directed vocabulary learning remains limited. This study investigates the relationship between EFL university students’ engagement with English TikTok videos and their self-directed vocabulary learning. Using a quantitative correlational design, the study involved 86 undergraduate EFL students from a state university in Palangka Raya, Indonesia. Data were collected through two validated instruments: the Self-Directed Vocabulary Learning Scale, measuring goal-setting, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation, and the TikTok Video Engagement Scale, assessing behavioural, affective, and cognitive engagement. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product-moment correlation analysis were employed. The findings revealed significant positive correlations between all dimensions of TikTok engagement and self-directed vocabulary learning (r = .445–.674, p <.001). Affective and cognitive engagement showed the strongest relationships with self-monitoring and self-evaluation. These results indicate that engagement with English-language TikTok videos is positively associated with learners’ autonomous vocabulary development. The study highlights the pedagogical potential of social media–based microlearning to support learner autonomy and vocabulary acquisition in the higher education EFL contexts.

Abstract

Peatlands have the potential to support sustainable agricultural production when properly managed, particularly through the use of organic inputs. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of organic fertilizer on the growth and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrient uptake efficiency of Dayak onion plants cultivated in inland peat soil. The research was conducted from September to December 2023 at the Experimental Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Palangka Raya. A randomized block design was used with five levels of cow manure application: 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 t.ha-1, each replicated four times. The application of cow manure significantly increased leaf number at 50, 60, and 70 days after planting (DAP), as well as the increase in leaf number between 40 and 50 days, root and shoot fresh weight, number of tillers, and fresh bulb weight. The 10 t.ha-1 treatment increased leaf number by 87% at 50 DAP, 74.2% at 60 DAP, and 43.8% at 70 DAP compared to the control treatment. However, it did not significantly affect plant height. The regression equation is y = −0.0081x² + 0.2226x + 2.8726, with R² = 0.99. The dose of cow manure fertilizer that produces maximum tuber fresh weight is approximately 13.75 t ha⁻¹. This dose shows the best growth response before tuber weight decreases at higher fertilization levels. These findings indicate that applying organic fertilizer, particularly at an optimal dosage, can improve the productivity of Dayak onion grown in peat soil, supporting the sustainable use of marginal land for horticultural development.

Abstract

This study investigates the lexical and structural differences between Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and its Indonesian translation, with a focus on preserving the novel’s symbolic, philosophical, and stylistic complexity. Using a qualitative descriptive approach rooted in translation theory, the study critiques existing strategies such as literal translation, transcreation, adaptation, and omission, and introduces a new model, CLASTIC (Contextual Lexical and Structural Translation with Intercultural Calibration). This model addresses the shortcomings of conventional methods by emphasizing contextual interpretation, semantic layering, structural adaptation, and cultural negotiation. Findings reveal that literal translation often leads to a loss of narrative tone and symbolic depth, while uncalibrated adaptation risks distorting authorial intent. The CLASTIC Model successfully bridges linguistic accuracy and cultural sensitivity, offering a comprehensive and applicable framework for translating literary texts from English into Indonesian. The study concludes that effective literary translation demands both interpretive creativity and intercultural awareness, especially when dealing with canonical works marked by complex symbolism and narrative style.

Abstract

ChatGPT has attracted considerable media and academic attention as one of the latest developments. It has the ability to generate answers to questions and perform other language-related tasks with exceptional accuracy. This is due to its extensive training set, which closely resembles human-produced texts. Many researchers consider ChatGPT to be an interesting tool for improving students' language and knowledge skills, as well as their problem-solving and communication skills. The study discussed some perceptions of the merits of ChatGPT on English student with each representative answering or filling a questionnaire containing their views or responses to ChatGPT conversations using a quantitative descriptive method. It is hoped that the study can learn how English education students feel using small talk, whether it is having a good effect on their performance or whether it is adversely affecting their performance in college. The results of correlation analysis show patterns of relationships between different variables. There is no linear relationship between the level of agree and strongly disagree, but there is a strong and negative correlation between the level of disagree and strongly agree. meanwhile, a strong positive relationship was observed between neutral and strongly disagree levels.

Abstract

This study analyzes George Orwell’s Animal Farm as a political allegory that critiques totalitarian regimes and the corruption of revolutionary ideals. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research applies semiotic and discourse analysis to examine the symbolic elements and political messages embedded in the novel. The findings reveal that characters such as Napoleon, Snowball, and Boxer symbolize key figures and classes from the Russian Revolution and Stalinist era, highlighting Orwell’s critique of propaganda, ideological control, and exploitation. The study shows how Orwell employs satire and allegory to depict the manipulation of language and truth, reflecting broader political realities both historically and in contemporary society. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power and remains highly relevant in today’s political climate.

Abstract

Speaking participation is a persistent challenge in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, particularly at the elementary school level where learners often experience anxiety and low confidence. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique in improving students’ participation in speaking activities. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of one cycle: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 25 sixth-grade students at a public Islamic elementary school in Palangka Raya, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations, field notes, and informal interviews with the English teacher. The results indicate a substantial increase in students’ speaking participation after the implementation of TPS. Active participation rose from approximately 20-25% in the initial condition to more than 65–70% by the end of the action cycle. Students also demonstrated higher confidence and willingness to express ideas in English. These findings suggest that TPS provides a supportive and structured learning environment that reduces anxiety and encourages equitable participation. Therefore, TPS can be considered an effective and practical cooperative learning strategy for enhancing speaking participation in elementary EFL classrooms.
